Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

In case you haven’t noticed, people have run off the OP with their nasty posts.

Anything to say to them? Thought not.

Edited

I agree with the ones that are saying that OPs post saying “everyone wants to live there” is nonsense are correct!

Also agree that it knowing where the country you want to live in is geographically is pretty stupid.

Also thinking it’s “glamorous”, so appears that it’s ok to just go there is also stupid.

I don’t think pointing any of these things out is unreasonable, maybe OP will be far more educated now.

So yes, I’d say well done to all these posters!

Do you not think that perhaps OP has been blind to the very many downsides of Dubai?

Anything to say to that???

”Waits for another long off topic post by @nomas , telling others to stop going off topic and only agree with OP”.

You didn't realise how close it was to Iran?

The mind boggles!

Just a missile launch away!!

It's been glamourised because 100s of billions of £$€ have been spent to make it so. What goes on beneath the glamour is perhaps different but sun/tax free money and a modern lifestyle for those tired of Western living is tempting. Now suddenly it's not as glamorous as it seems

Cons
Morally bankrupt
Facade of Westernisation hiding deeply embedded culture of misogyny and intolerance
Built on slavery
Cultural wasteland
Servants are commonly used and sold
Draconian worldview
Women are second class citizens
Gay people get publicly assaulted
In the middle of the most volatile place on earth

Pros
Sunny
Looks nice on Instagram

Morally bankrupt

Two names for you. Andrew MW and Peter Mandelson.

The UK is hardly morally better.

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

Everyone certainly does not want to move there. You couldn't pay me to move there (even before recent events). I'm not convinced this is true. Who contemplates moving without knowing where you would be on a map?

Sensible people have always been better informed than to be taken in by the ‘glamour’.
’The lifestyle’ in dubai has been built off the backs of extremely poorly paid and treated people from deprived areas of the world. Human rights are not a ‘thing’ over there.
Whilst I wish no harm on anyone, it is a little hard to feel a lot of sympathy for people who have chosen to support the place by going out there.

Two British people being amoral does not make the entire country morally bankrupt. Dubai is currently building itself up on the backs of slaves. The two are not vaguely comparable

Suspect 1000s of Brits already living in Dubai are the same. They think it's a tax haven Disney land rather than an oppressive nightmare in the most volatile region on earth.

Not only Dubai. Any place with lower taxes or zero taxes.

Chumpington · 01/03/2026 16:53

It's the idiocracy age we live in. Just viewing the world through empty vacuous Instagram and influencers.
Sounds harsh but true.

This. More money than sense, now that the equation between intelligence, work and money has been completely broken.

’Glamorous’. Ffs. ‘Everyone says’ also ffs.

I cannot imagine moving to a different country - continent, even - and not checking it out on a map. Mind-boggling indeed.

HeadyLamarr · 01/03/2026 17:11

Women have no rights, gays and lesbians are arrested and beaten, it's a cesspit of slavery, and it's only now Iran is bombing it you're wondering whether to move?

While the Foreign Office say not to travel it's highly unlikely your DH's employers will send him there

Most certainly. Iran already has another leader in place, probably worse than the last. It has the weaponry and the ability to use it. Avoid at all costs.

Viviennemary · 01/03/2026 17:11

BerryTwister · 01/03/2026 17:04

Not everyone wants to move there. I’d rather live in a tent in Siberia!

I wouldn't go that far! I've only been to the airport in Dubai and wouldnt go again. But I've not been to a tent in Siberia either.

Maybe start playing Globle to improve your world geography OP!

🤣
I have to say Globle has done wonders for my geographical knowledge!

Let’s stop posting to each other and make this nonsense end. I won’t reply again.

OP has left anyway, this is pointless.

Your post was to me. You are being stranger and stranger. Glad you aren't going to reply.

The UK is hardly morally better.

Apart from the appalling treatment of foreign workers, The UK does not pretend to be a happy sunny playground ( to get the tourist coin) and then randomly enforce sharia law

There is literally no intelligent comparison to be made

Two people you can name..

Hardly a comparison 🤣!

So, it would appear far from wanting everyone to “be kind” to OP, you’re actually the sort of person who is either living in Dubai, or thinks it’s a “great”
place…… it’s not!

I'm not sure I'd believe the no crime whatsoever. My ex employers had offices in the UEA and break-ins to westerner complexes/communities were rife and a female colleague was sexually assaulted.

Okay. Then next to no crime. And if you report it good chance something gets done. There's extensive CCTV.

SuperSharpShooter · 01/03/2026 15:49

The mind boggles!

People don't watch the news or take an interest, so it's probably why this trouble has come as a shock to some. If you were planning to move somewhere though surely some investigation about the place would be done?

I really want to go on holiday to Jordan this year in February, but got really nervous in December with everything happening and when I mentioned it to my dd's they looked at me and pulled faces of concern - so I didn't book

Marmalademorning · 01/03/2026 17:15

Dubai is a lot safer than the UK and there are better prospects compared to the UK. Things are on a continual downward spiral here. I would go for it OP. This is only a recent development and things are changing all the time.

Jerys · 01/03/2026 17:15

The UAE are now doing a lot to tackle the mistreatment of migrant workers. Women are not second class and are probably a lot safer in the GCC than in the UK. Since when do gay people get publicly assaulted - you just can't do PDA there.

thegreatreckoning · 01/03/2026 17:16

From my experience of Dubai, I always thought it was full of Brits too thick to make it in the UK, who don’t care a fig about anything other than getting a lifestyle that transcends their abilities, bought at the expense of wholesale human rights abuses. This OP is just reinforcing that notion.

BlimeyOReillyO · 01/03/2026 17:17

Let’s hope that if OP has children now or when she’s out there, that they’re heterosexual males.

Its a really great place for them!

Apart from its proximity to Iran of course! But maybe they could change that in time?
