Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

I would love to get all the people mocking the op to draw their own map of the area. I spend ages on Google maps but I only have a rough idea of the location of Middle Eastern countries...I thought Iran was slightly further west rather than just across the gulf. I don't think that makes me an imbecile.

To be fair though they aren't saying they want to move there. No one has to know where anything is but it might be sensible to get clued up if you want to actually relocate.

The UAE are now doing a lot to tackle the mistreatment of migrant workers. Women are not second class and are probably a lot safer in the GCC than in the UK. Since when do gay people get publicly assaulted - you just can't do PDA there.

Oh that’s ok then….

They’re doing lots… 🤔

Gay relationships are illegal, punishable by various things, including the death penalty.

”Just” no PDAs or what?

thegreatreckoning · 01/03/2026 17:16

From my experience of Dubai, I always thought it was full of Brits too thick to make it in the UK, who don’t care a fig about anything other than getting a lifestyle that transcends their abilities, bought at the expense of wholesale human rights abuses. This OP is just reinforcing that notion.

Don't Richard Tice - MP for Dubai - and his partner Isabel Oakeshott live in Dubai ?

ZenNudist · 01/03/2026 17:22

I think people are being pretty sneery. I'm not moving there admittedly but I didn't realise Iran was across the Persian gulf from UAE. I also didn't see this coming even with the violence that's been going on in Iran in the last few months. I never thought the US would do this, though I know its been a very very long time coming. I also didn't appreciate Iran would lash out at the UAE though makes sense to try and disable US abilities to launch strikes as well as to make this everyone's problem so that other countries will put pressure on the US to cease.

I hope your DH gets permission to stay on the UK and keep his job. There's no way you can go now. I'm sorry.

Jerys · 01/03/2026 17:14

Okay. Then next to no crime. And if you report it good chance something gets done. There's extensive CCTV.

No crime... perhaps because slavery and similar despicable things that are illegal here aren't over there. Slavery is not a crime.

On the other hand homosexuality can be punished with the death penalty.

Better to enslave people than like someone the same gender 🤔

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 15:59

Well there are 2 snooker players living there Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan. Wonder what they’ll do now?

Wondering what Richard Tice, Isabel Oakshott and Nadhim Zahawi plan to do… Perhaps they might be considering living and paying some tax in the UK…

LovesLabradors · 01/03/2026 17:24

To be fair to OP I don't think many of us expected Dubai to be bombed yesterday - it's not generally a conflict-affected area and many, many Brits holiday and live there.
I've never been to the ME, but my Dad worked out there for years in the 90s/2000s - Dubai, Saudi, Qatar, Israel etc etc as he was an oil/gas engineer. Things can turn in an instant, and although it never happened to him, he had colleagues who were emergency evacuated, because a coup or something like this had happened overnight. I also knew a Diplomat's wife, who had to be evacuated - Yemen I think - they had to leave everything - left with the clothes they were wearing and their passports.
OP - I don't think you'll be moving there in 4 weeks (even if you still want to!), unless this blows over v quickly, and frankly it looks like it's ramping up today. I think it's more likely the Foreign Office will advise against travel, and start bringing Brits home tbh. But far too early to tell.

They can't get a private jet yet. Oh the horror!

ThankYouNigel · 01/03/2026 17:26

YANBU - but not only for those current reasons.

It completely destroyed my friend’s marriage living out there. She wishes in hindsight they had never set foot there. Described it as a completely fake, materialistic and spoilt lifestyle full of fake people to match. She is relieved to be back in the UK despite now being a divorced single mum, still feels way better off.

Tread carefully.

Whitengold · 01/03/2026 17:27

All those tax exiles who'll be clamouring for the next flight out, thinking their money should protect them, and that the UK government should rescue them. Which no doubt we will if it comes to it.

NewZebra · 01/03/2026 17:27

Wars aside, I don’t think you should move somewhere that you couldn’t even pinpoint on a map.

Holidaymumjoy · 01/03/2026 17:27

SuperSharpShooter · 01/03/2026 15:49

You didn't realise how close it was to Iran?

The mind boggles!

Yet, USA citizens get ridiculed when they come out with comments like this!

@placemats Might they have to slum it with the plebs? 😱

Those poor, poor patriots.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/03/2026 17:28

You are hoping the Middle East crisis will be resolved soon? Well it’s been a bin fire since the early 1900’s, so I’m sure it will be sorted in the next 4 weeks so you can move as planned.

TheChirpyReader · 01/03/2026 17:28

Yeah it's a glamourised lifestyle if you're new money and don't give a shit about slavery or oppression of women, gay people, and so on.

But you'll find even in your peers that don't care, one of the biggest complaints about living in Dubai as an outsider is that everyone quickly leaves or is planning to.

Gutted for you that numerous deaths in the middle east which led to this and now, might challenge your plans and need to look at a map and actually understand where you're planning to move to and educate yourself though hun, thoughts and prayers.

One of my fave books in the house is a huge atlas.

It amazes me how many British people just think Dubai is Real Housewives of England without realising the political and geographical realities of it.

It amazes me too. And Dubai pays influencers to whitewash it's image on social media - and then more people move there, not realising at all what the region is like

Holidaymumjoy · 01/03/2026 17:31

Medesres · 01/03/2026 16:01

I'd looked up DH new office on Google maps and places we were thinking of living. Looked at nearby things on Google and landmarks, just hadn't zoomed out that far to see everything else. I knew Iran was nearby but I just wasnt thinking about that as no idea there would be war. People will laugh but it just wasn't my first thought, I was more concerned about neighbourhoods/ supermarkets etc

and lifestyle as you said!

was your move also tax saving motivated? You don’t need to answer
my DH global business has clients from all over the
including in Middle East.

AlwaysRightISwear · 01/03/2026 17:31

Sorry to pile on OP but you have been very naive.

Even if the present crisis subsided I would not go. The region is fundamentally unsafe.

Yet, USA citizens get ridiculed when they come out with comments like this!

We’ve been following American culture for years (meaning Britain has been copying, it’s very Americanised here now). The vacuity of the op is the result. Money is divorced from sense or intelligence and is purely the result of inheritance again.

inmyfashion · 01/03/2026 17:32

Struggling to imagine being the sort of person who would move to a country and not know the surrounding countries. Come on, OP.

SpringSe · 01/03/2026 17:33

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 01/03/2026 16:01

The only 2 aspects of your post that are unreasonable are (i) the fact that you are only starting to question things (rather than ruling it out entirely) and (ii) the fact you did not realise how close to Iran it was. I totally understand that geography is not everyone’s strength, but surely if you are considering relocating to a different country you would educate yourself about where in the world it is?

I am not saying this to be unkind. But I do think it’s so important that people (and I am really focussing on women here) are not passive observers in their own lives. Moving abroad is a big thing. Even more so if you have children who are dependent upon you for their safety and security. It’s so vital to take ownership of your decisions and that can only happen through being fully informed.

In answer to your primary question - in my view the only reasonable thing to do is to cancel the move.

This is a good viewpoint to add to this thread. A move across the world….you need to zoom out on the map. I’m a complete map geek and understand others aren’t but if you’re moving to the Middle East…yikes, not looking at the map properly and knowing where you’re moving to is really strange.

she may 9r may not be moving in four weeks, but again this isn’t about if it’s 4 weeks or 6, it’s the whole move, she’s just realised she’s moving to the Middle East. And the reality of that.

The UAE is actively seeking to improve things and have implemented labour reforms. I stayed with family there not too long ago and their house help is treated very well. They've got the wage protection system now and even the US State Department agrees the UAE is striving to make improvements.

We have human trafficking here as well.

You can like the same gender, just according to UAE laws and customs they ask you not to act upon it.
