Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

I'd miss the green grass of home, and Dubai seems pretty soulless. I love the sun, but desert temps would drive me nutty.
If I wanted to move my family to another country, you can be sure I'd be researching everything about that place.

Because her husband’s employers will have a policy on this and will be able to advise them better in time, as they see the situation develop.

Honestly??

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whatever their policy it's not going to make the ME any safer 🤣🤣🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

The people who built the historic sites destroyed woodland to build them though?

That's right! Well. Just shows you
The UK is far worse than Dubai! 😂

Underminedteacher · 01/03/2026 19:46

How on earth could anyone think of emigrating anywhere without studying the geography, politics and culture of where they are going????? Absolutely astounded by this.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 01/03/2026 19:46

Op has, quite understandably, disappeared. The gloating weirdness on this thread is awful.

ERthree · 01/03/2026 19:47

Well OP maybe take this time to educate yourself on the Geography, history and politics of the area you intend moving your children too.

cocoromo · 01/03/2026 19:48

TheignT · 01/03/2026 15:54

No not everyone wants to go there.

agreed - couldn’t think of anything worse. Definitely don’t go op.

Saying everyone wants to live in Dubai is much weirder, as is not knowing the geographical location and thinking that escaping grey skies for blue missile filled skies!

I mean come on, it’s pretty awful that OP is blaming friends and SM for making them want to go there?

Medesres · 01/03/2026 19:51

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 01/03/2026 16:24

I would love to get all the people mocking the op to draw their own map of the area. I spend ages on Google maps but I only have a rough idea of the location of Middle Eastern countries...I thought Iran was slightly further west rather than just across the gulf. I don't think that makes me an imbecile.

Exactly! There's some really nasty snobby comments on here. Classic mumsnet. I won't be commenting further

You can travel overland from Saudi Arabia if the airport still isn't open by then.

Who do you think she is, Gertrude Bell on horseback?

Really, not anything worse? Do you suffer from a stunted imagination or do you just not know much about other countries?

Prancingpickle · 01/03/2026 19:52

How would you consider moving somewhere without knowing where it is?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 01/03/2026 19:52

nomas · 01/03/2026 16:25

Yep, suddenly they’re all ME experts.

I mean, I had no idea where Dubai was in relation to Iran before this thread, but I'm not planning on moving there!

I feel like "Where in the world is the country I'm moving to" is pretty much the first bit of information you check when thinking of moving there.

Why on earth would you compare same sex attraction to paedophilia or incest? What the hell is wrong with you.

To have to hide normal, adult sexuality is abhorrent.

I honestly wouldn't do a great job drawing an accurate map right now. But crucially I'm not the one supposed to be moving out there in 4 weeks!!

if I was I'd have done much
more research on its exact location than where the nearest supermarket is.

but that's academic as it ME, & I wouldn't even give moving there (or holidaying there ) a passing thought.

A good few years ago I transited in Doha when flying to NZ. It's been a long time since I've been prepared to even do that. Though it's getting so hard to find a route I'd be happy taking I'm starting to think maybe I should start digging (my mum is there or I might just not bother going back)

She wasn’t blaming anyone. Stats say that lots of people do what to, and have, moved from the UK to the Middle East. You, and everyone else on here knows that, you just don’t approve, so you’re sticking the boot in.

CharlotteRumpling · 01/03/2026 19:54

I have to admit I never thought Iran would attack Gulf countries.

Prancingpickle · 01/03/2026 19:52

Oh, her teachers will probably be blamed for never showing her how to open a map.

likelysuspect · 01/03/2026 19:55

18 pages in Im sure Im not saying anything someone hasnt already said, but this is why people dont advise moving to somewhere like that, the whole region has been unstable for hundreds of years and what affects one country, affects the neighbours.

Im not entirely sure how you would think you're moving somewhere but dont know where it is in the world either.

Beesandhoney123 · 01/03/2026 19:55

Even if it wasn't so volatile out there at the minute, it's a shit time to go.
Any expat or local that can afford to will be preparing to leave for a few months to avoid the heat. You won't be able to go outside.
You'll have to be prepared to hit the playgrounds about 9pm, and even then it will be too hot, if you have kids.

Where will you be living? I don't think I'd like to be signing a year lease, or buying a car, furnishing a house.

Still, you might get some cheap deals as everyone charges for the airport and cuts their losses. If they can leave of course and don't owe any money. Or their company hasn't blocked their passport in case they try and leave before their contract is up.

Have you been on expat woman or any uk sites? You won't find anything except praise on any social media from dubai. Its a dictatorship. You will get into trouble if you start complaining on the Internet over there, from what I hear.

Abitlosttoday · 01/03/2026 19:55

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:53

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

I don't want to move there. It sounds horrendous, and not just because of the current situation.

FrozenFebruary · 01/03/2026 19:57

Boomer55 · 01/03/2026 16:25

I wouldn’t right now, but see how it is in a couple of weeks.

Another one who seems to think Dubai isn't going to be in the ME in a couple if weeks 🙇🏻‍♀️

& you have no excuse, you're old enough to know better.

ArabiaArabia · 01/03/2026 19:51

@NotMeAtAll you just can't travel like that in the ME. You need a visa to get into Saudi. You need an exit visa. It's not as simple as that!
