Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

She wasn’t blaming anyone. Stats say that lots of people do what to, and have, moved from the UK to the Middle East. You, and everyone else on here knows that, you just don’t approve, so you’re sticking the boot in.

OP should not have said everyone wants to move there, that’s bollocks!

She said she’s moving there because

Friends said it’s better than grey (without missiles sky) skies than UK!

Sounds like “it’s not my fault” to
me 🤷‍♀️

Exactly! There's some really nasty snobby comments on here. Classic mumsnet. I won't be commenting further

Don't worry OP I didn't realise how close Iran was to Dubai either. Clearly some Mumsnetters have nothing else better to do than mock others.

Why on earth would you compare same sex attraction to paedophilia or incest? What the hell is wrong with you.

To have to hide normal, adult sexuality is abhorrent.

To them it's not normal and not okay. That's their country and visitors need to respect their law.

I'll give another example. The GCC allow polygamy but the UK doesn't.

Jerys · 01/03/2026 19:11

I loved it there, if the price to pay for security, safety and no-income tax is to be a bit more modest in public, that's fine with me

Ah yes, evil, evil taxation.

The fundamental mechanism for fostering a better, more functional society by funding public goods, services, and infrastructure that benefit the collective rather than just individuals.

Awful thing to ask of people, eh…

If you were planning on relocating your family there you’d at least… have a look.

I wouldn't call Isabel Oakeshott, Kate Ferdinand or Jo Malone left leaning. To name a few who moved to Dubai and sing its praises.

@Jerys

Did you seriously just try to equate being gay with sexually assaulting children who cannot consent???

Wtf.

Are you also moving there to live? If so, I’d suggest researching what’s going to be around you?

It’s not mocking, but I won’t be told “everyone” wants to move there, they don’t!

But then slavery costs less than actually paying people do maybe the government are saving money that way

ThisJadeBear · 01/03/2026 20:07

I wouldn’t want to go right now. The issue is partly Trump - he is harder to ‘read’ than other Presidents, it’s like he’s found the red button, and wants to use it.
I am old enough to be your mum and tend to think of the ME as having instability, but then I grew up fearing the IRA bombing my home city, and it did.
Watch and wait. Keep speaking to your other half and I’m sure his employer will be watchful as well.
Certainly not going to judge you for going there, I have several friends who live there who love it, mainly teachers and doctors.

But in reality, homosexuality is not prosecuted in the UAE and certainly not by death/ life imprisonment. There are a lot of gay people living in Dubai/ going there on holiday and so long as you're not literally snogging your BF/GF in public (note this is also illegal for heterosexual people), there is v unlikely to be a problem. The police don't go round looking for gay people to arrest, just like they don't go round hotels looking for unmarried couples to arrest. There is of course still the "there's no problem until there's a problem" risk but it needs to be kept in perspective.

Would you want your gay child to “keep it in perspective “ and run the risk?

Honestly, I'm known for being someone who knows 'everything about everything' but Geography just does not stick unless I really concentrate on it. I spoke to my Brother-in-law tonight and his wife is American. He was talking about potential work in different states, and I had to confess to him that I hear 'America' and think of a 'blob over there' on the world map. I wouldn't have the first clue where any of the States are within it.

Having said that, I do tend to play Globle now and I'm getting pretty good at knowing where the more common countries are. I still get a bit mixed up between countries in Africa and South America because they're 'down there', and South Asia is a bit tricky with all the stans, etc.

I think @Medesres people are not being particularly snobby. I don’t have a detailed knowledge of where some countries are in relation to others (could not locate most countries in Africa for example), but then I am not planning to live there – but you were going to move there at the end of the month and yet you had apparently never looked at where it was on a map. That's unusual to say the least.

A friend of mine is considering moving to Spain – she has been there multiple times and recently got back from a research trip to scope out accommodation. That kind of prep is more usual when you are planning to emigrate, that’s all people are saying.

There is some good advice on here, so I hope you have read it and taken it on board.

Wellthisisdifficult · 01/03/2026 20:07

@Wellthisisdifficult

Exactly. If the parasite billionaires weren’t leeching off the workers and then flouncing off to Dubai to dodge contributing to the system that enabled them to amount their wealth, I’d say allow the the morally corrupt lot to congregate around one another - they all very much deserve each other!

TesChique · 01/03/2026 20:17

You were moving out there to live, with your children, and you had "no idea" how close to Iran it was?

Had you done even the smallest baseline level of research on this country before deciding to move?

I despair.

ShiftingSand · 01/03/2026 20:17

SuperSharpShooter · 01/03/2026 15:49

You didn't realise how close it was to Iran?

The mind boggles!

The first thing I would have done was look at a map to see its exact location and surrounding countries🤔

I would suggest though, that were you to consider emigrating to one of those places, you'd have a look?
It's so simple now with Google maps, isn't it? I'm glad you're enjoying Globle, there are some great interactive Geography quizzes on Sporcle.

Holidaymumjoy · 01/03/2026 20:21

Prancingpickle · 01/03/2026 19:52

How would you consider moving somewhere without knowing where it is?

And this is the point people are making! Not generally about a world map quiz!

dont know why op and few people are deflecting. Also not a biggie if it was just op alone going! She is uprooting whole family (her DH). None takes family to an unknown place surely! Or are we saying relying on what friends tell you should be sufficient enough for an adult to make a decision to grab passport and go?!?!

Beesandhoney123 · 01/03/2026 20:21

Bear in mind when you leave, you might want to find out what happens to your Nics.

And, should you divorce, if you do get to take the kids home, and bear in mind you'll have to get your dh to agree at the airport he gives permission for you to leave with the kids, the UAE is outside jurisdiction from the uk, so don't expect any maintenance.

Don't forget you won't be able to have your own bank account, or drive without your dh agreeing. Or sit round a pool. It's TOO HOT always.

Women in Dubai can have their own bank accounts and drive.

Yeah, who cares about people's homes and wildlife and woodland and historic sites 😂

I don't? Transport infrastructure is actually a good thing if built properly would have been a good boost to the economy. But then again we live in the UK
