Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

YANBU to be worried but there’s no point stressing right now. Give it a couple
of weeks.

Who is funding the move? Does the employer offer insurance?

Not sure how to vote but I'd not go. Not sure if you're UK, but Gov website advises against all but essential travel

United Arab Emirates travel advice - GOV.UK share.google/eQk153dTXgYJ8vblv

It’s hard to be objective because I’d hate to live there anyway. What I would say is the situation is not going to be resolved quickly. The whole region is destabilised. YABU to not have known what countries surround where you are emigrating TBH.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/03/2026 15:47

I don't think you'll be able to fly there even if you do decide to still go

This.

I’m not sure you will be able to go even if you wanted. Dubai international airport is closed currently and the uk government is against all travel and advises uk citizens to shelter in place immediately.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things

I am not least bit surprised!!

SuperSharpShooter · 01/03/2026 15:49

You didn't realise how close it was to Iran?

The mind boggles!

Hedgehog2026 · 01/03/2026 15:49

Your DH needs to be consulting his bosses PDQ to find out what the situation is. Even if travel recommenced, would you feel safe going? Conversely will your DH still have a job in this country if you now decide not to go? It may not be your decision to make.

smooththecat · 01/03/2026 15:49

I had no idea how close to Iran it was

Where did you think it was?

ThisSunnyBee · 01/03/2026 15:50

How can you emigrate not being aware of where it sits politically and geographically. There's no quick fix coming so that it'll all be ok to go and sit by the swimming pool.

loislovesstewie · 01/03/2026 15:51

Another one who can't believe that you had no idea where it it in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if no one can go to Dubai for some time. Unless Iran capitulates, a provisional government takes over which isn't a theocracy, I can only imagine this will rumble on for quite a while.

Maybe start playing Globle to improve your world geography OP!

Give it a couple of weeks

Its not going to be "safe to travel" within a couple of weeks!

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2026 15:53

You had no idea how close to Iran it was?! How much research have you done about moving there?

I think the decision will be pretty much taken out of your hands, by then it’ll be ‘open’ and business as usual (ish) so you might as well go, or it’ll be ‘closed’ and then you’ll just need to wait.

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

This would be added to the top of at least 3 reasons why I wouldn't move to Dubai.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 01/03/2026 15:54

YABU to be four weeks for moving to a country you know almost nothing about. How didn’t you know where it was?!

No one said it was.

PinkyFlamingo · 01/03/2026 15:54

You didn't even look it up on a map?

No not everyone wants to go there.

Ponoka7 · 01/03/2026 15:54

This reminds me of being in Egypt and other holiday makers being disgusted when they found out that they were in Africa.

The lifestyle is great, as was being near the top in every society built and relying on slavery. Best of luck.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 01/03/2026 15:55

Having read your last update I’m not even sure this can be genuine.

The trouble is things have escalated pdq but of course everyone’s scared and no one knows what’s happening yet. For me I have a friend who lived in Dubai and at the end she hated it. But I also know people who love the luxe lifestyle there. At the end of the day it’s your life.

nomas · 01/03/2026 15:56

No not everyone wants to go there.

She’s talking about her friends, not you.

She’s stressed enough without posters adding to it.
