Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

I think OP is sadly representative of a lot of westerners emigrating to UAE. The wilful ignorance over how the country operates on slavery and how vulnerable everyone is to the whims of the police because of strict laws is shocking. It’s supposedly glamorous though so who cares!

Why have you got an issue with me? I'm not the only poster whose pointed that not everyone wants to move there.

You mean why do I think people might mean what they say? Well yes I do, why would I say everyone wants to do something if I know that isn't true. Makes communication difficult don't you think? Hang on did I mean that or just say it for the sake of it.

Because your response was not helpful to OP at all.

She’s stressed out of her mind, how does it help her to know you don’t want to move there?

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

You have been fooled by false advertising I’m afraid. It’s very much a case of the emperor’s new clothes.

You’re not alone though. They’ve done a job on a lot of poorly informed individuals.

I’ve travelled extensively and wouldn’t put Dubai in my top 100 places to live.

HelenaWilson · 01/03/2026 16:21

I would think that you will have to move heaven and earth to put a stop to this move (assuming it's not stopped by outside agencies).

Is his employer a UK company?
Given that the FO is advising against all but essential travel to the region, I doubt op will be going anywhere. If dh has an essential skill that's needed there I suppose he might still go, but employer has a duty of care, and it won't be possible to get insurance if travelling against FO advice.

No everyone doesn't want to move there. I'd rather move to Skelmersdale.

Lambington · 01/03/2026 16:21

There is a reason they pay westerners a fortune to go there. If something seems too good to be true it usually is.
And "the lifestyle" is achieved by expoliting slave labour - nothing more nothing less. Some people are ok with that. Some are not.

Well here's comprehension problem number one, I didn't say I didn't want to go.

I'd looked up DH new office on Google maps and places we were thinking of living. Looked at nearby things on Google and landmarks, just hadn't zoomed out that far to see everything else. I knew Iran was nearby but I just wasnt thinking about that as no idea there would be war. People will laugh but it just wasn't my first thought, I was more concerned about neighbourhoods/ supermarkets etc

confused jeff bridges GIF

Checked out the supermarkets….riiight.

Nomad says it isn't helpful to say that. You're probably on the naughty step with me.

How do you suppose giving it a couple of weeks is going to help?

it's not suddenly going to be a goid dustance iron Iran. It's not suddenly it going to be in the ME.

@Medesres if this isn't a wake up call to the reality of living in the ME, I don't know what will be. You can make it pretty & offer shit loads of money to live there, but you can change what it is fundamentally.

Because her husband’s employers will have a policy on this and will be able to advise them better in time, as they see the situation develop.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 01/03/2026 16:24

I would love to get all the people mocking the op to draw their own map of the area. I spend ages on Google maps but I only have a rough idea of the location of Middle Eastern countries...I thought Iran was slightly further west rather than just across the gulf. I don't think that makes me an imbecile.

I wouldn’t right now, but see how it is in a couple of weeks.

I expect it's a bit much to expect that you've done any research wrt the laws of the land and how they might affect you and DC then?

If i was moving my family there i would have studied a map at the very least.

Are you intending to live there? No? Then, no, you're not an imbecile. Why would you research an area minutely that you're not going to live?

To be fair, we’re not moving there and would likely do a good deal more research than watching influencers on insta.

Those people weren't about to move their children there!

You're right there are lots of places in the world I couldn't pinpoint on a map, but I'd have a look before booking a holiday there, let alone moving my family.

Anyway, stop derailing OP’s thread, it’s tedious.

She has probably left this shit show anyway.

I would.

My SIL has had to go to Bahrain, Saudi and Dubai for work in the past and hated all three.
