Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:42

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

i don’t think she said she had DC to be fair.

That's true. I don't think she did. Thank fuck for that. One tick

There is a reason they pay westerners a fortune to go there. If something seems too good to be true it usually is.
And "the lifestyle" is achieved by expoliting slave labour - nothing more nothing less. Some people are ok with that. Some are not.

Well said.

Maybe you need to look up what ‘maybe’ means.

Anyway, stop derailing OP’s thread, it’s tedious.

She has probably left this shit show anyway.

Are you in charge? No one told me.

somuchbedding · 01/03/2026 16:27

Yes I don’t understand why people are not a bit more freaked out by the prevalence of modern slavery in countries like UAE

Because of low taxes

nomas · 01/03/2026 16:28

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 16:27

I would.

My SIL has had to go to Bahrain, Saudi and Dubai for work in the past and hated all three.

Happy to leech their money though.

You have been fooled by false advertising I’m afraid. It’s very much a case of the emperor’s new clothes.

You’re not alone though. They’ve done a job on a lot of poorly informed individuals.

I’ve travelled extensively and wouldn’t put Dubai in my top 100 places to live.

Neither would I. It's horrific and about as far from 'glamorous' as it's possible to be. I'm also shocked that anyone could agree to move to Dubai and not know how close to Iran it is.

TheignT · 01/03/2026 15:54

No not everyone wants to go there.

Absolutely this! Not only do I not want to live there I have no desire to visit or even do a long haul stop over in such a vile place.

Because your response was not helpful to OP at all.

She’s stressed out of her mind, how does it help her to know you don’t want to move there?

Yes I agree. I think we get the message everyone - you wouldn't want to live there because you are more enlightened than the OP. Well done.
Now explaim how your enlightenment helps the OP exactly?

Yep, suddenly they’re all ME experts.

So making a huge decision on where to live, don't you think most people would do some basic research? Not just rely on Instagram?

BlimeyOReillyO · 01/03/2026 16:29

Medesres · 01/03/2026 15:53

I knew it was in middle east Gulf and obviously Iran is in that area too but I hadn't studied the map in great detail until today.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there. Then something like this happens and you get a reality check

Dh going to speak to his work tomorrow. I'm sure they wouldn't send him if it escalates

I can assure you not everyone wants to move there! For very good reason.

Lots of different reasons.

Insta Z listers want to move there. You could throw £1m of their tax free cash at me and I still wouldn’t move there.

I disagree. I think it is helpful to OP to have some people be straight with her about how utterly ridiculous it is to contemplate moving to the Middle East, without researching it, just because she believes “everyone wants to”.

Maybe the OP will read the posts on this thread and she and her husband will pull out of the move altogether. Win win

She’ll realise that not everyone wants to move there and reflect on why? No matter how glamorous she thinks it is.

Dolphinnoises · 01/03/2026 16:30

God people can be so unhelpful.
@Medesres I would say that while the Foreign Office is advising against travel, it’s very unlikely your DH’s employer would make you all travel and you would be on strong ground pushing back if they suggested you should leave on schedule.

AgnesMcDoo · 01/03/2026 16:31

You are moving to a place that doesn’t respect human rights so not sure why you are worried about a bit of war fare

I gave her a fact. Always useful to actually know the truth. She's obviously been persuaded that it is so great everyone wants to go there. Several if us have given her some information.

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 16:31

Off topic but i just googled young people emigrating to Dubai and 'potty parties' came up. OMFG

lessglittermoremud · 01/03/2026 16:32

I think all you can do is wait and see what happens, to be fair to you I had to look up exactly where it was when the trouble started as wasn’t sure.
I wouldn’t ever live somewhere with such a poor history of human rights, oppression of women etc so I had no need to know where it was specifically, it does seem very odd that you wouldn’t research it throughly before contemplating the move.
My DH colleague left their work place to move there, he was younger, single with no children. The pay he was being offered was much more than here and wanted to move over there for the experience whilst he was unattached. He said it’s not a place he’d want to raise a family in though so plans on it being a short term prospect.

Some common sense at last. No one cares where people want to go to or don’t want to go, OP is in a tricky situation and needs help not smuggery bollocks.

I think you have misunderstood, she’s not concerned about the schedule it’s moving there full stop.

Jerys · 01/03/2026 16:33

We love the GCC and would love to go. But unsure about the situation now. I'm hoping it'll clear up soon and wishing you a smooth move @Medesres !
