Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

It sounds rigid to me, why do you think everything has to be bleached every single day? It should be used sparingly especially on worktops.

Pinkissmart · 01/03/2026 12:53

Sounds like you have your morning routine and so does she?

Perhaps neither of you are social in the morning?

Just apologise and let it go

OP has absolutely nothing to apologise for.

MyDandyUmberDuck · 01/03/2026 13:07

You both snapped at each other over nothing. Are you just not morning people or has she overstated her welcome?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 13:10

My waste toilet water goes to a sewage plant not into a river! And a drop of bleach is not responsible for damaging aquatic life!!

Thanks for the laugh though...i feel like im in the twilight zone

Your cat is locked out all night?

I'm shocked by this too.

There are signs on bleach and detergents though that say harmful to aquatic life? I did think we weren’t supposed to over use them?

Wallywobbles · 01/03/2026 13:14

Oh my. Your cat is beautiful.

moose62 · 01/03/2026 13:14

I also have a fixed routine in the morning as otherwise I would be late for work.
I understand the need to do things in order...it gives me a sense of calm and the knowledge that I haven't missed anything.

Dont listen to the posters about cats. I have two, a cap flap and try and lock them in at night! Almost impossible! Your cat looks perfectly happy.

Perhaps you shouldn't have snapped but I know how irritating it is when someone is just doom scrolling all day and us then critical of you for doing what you do!

Wishingplenty · 01/03/2026 13:14

I have a very strict and rigid routine because I have 3 young children so have little choice. Single living on my own with more time throughout the day, I probably wouldn't have any sort of routine atoll.

My cat has a cat flap, she goes in and out at all hours. Sometimes she can be seen sitting on the back wall gazing at the stars. Before she came to join us she was an indoor cat, I think she missed being able to go out.

Cats are hunters. Hunters hunt at night 😂

Im a vet and my cat chooses to go out and stay out all night. He knocks on the door when he’s ready to come back in.

Get a grip giving OP a hard time about it

I don’t care if you are the queen of the veterinary council of the whole world - cats kill up to 270 million animals per year in UK they are killing machines and are NOT native, there are calls for their right to roam and their outright banning from different quarters. As a vet you would think you had a tad more empathy for our native species!

We're not. The OP didn't want people to question her it seems, just agree with her routine!

Cat people DON'T CARE

Your routine is fine. Wish I could do that much in 20 mins. The first 20 mins of my morning is taken up by my dog .

Re your friend - depends on why she is staying with you. Fun weekend ? Your rigidity possibly spoils the mood. But if she’s staying as she needed a favour, then she just needs to be grateful.

faerylights · 01/03/2026 13:23

Sounds almost identical to my morning routine - but I would relax it a bit if I had a guest staying as I do think it looks a bit rude to fuss about cleaning while you have guests.

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 13:25

My cat is not 'a killing machine' 😂

AngryBird6122 · 01/03/2026 13:27

'a drop of bleach'
every day
x 1 million people

adds up!

🙄

supersop60 · 01/03/2026 13:27

OP - do whatever suits you in your own home.
My morning routine - dog wakes me up about 6.30. I let him out for wee, and I have one at the same time (not in the garden). I feed him and make a cup of tea. Then I have a lazy hour watching the news.
Dishwasher and/or laundry is done overnight.

If I was staying at a friend's and they started bustling round bleaching everything in sight, opening all the windows, putting bins out and the washing machine on, I'd take it as a clear sign they were desperate for me to leave!

OP may as well have handed her coat and shoes to her on her way back from all the toilet bleaching.

Luckyingame · 01/03/2026 13:28

No. Your routine, whatever your choice, is perfectly fine.
Maybe your "mate" ought to chill, as they are staying at yours.
I can't wait to live in a similar way! 😊

Babsandherwabs · 01/03/2026 13:28

YANBU surely your level of efficiency is what we’re all aiming for? Tidy house with time left over to then chill. She’s feeling exposed/inadequate and taking it out on you. (I’m definitely more like your friend than you!)

AngryBird6122 · 01/03/2026 13:28

GoldilocksIsALittleSod · 01/03/2026 12:32

Only on mn would a thread about a cleaning routine become about whether a sodding cat is out overnight (sorry, I'm sure the sodding cat is lovely! ).
Cats will find somewhere warm and comfortable if needed. They don't just sit there and freeze themselves to death 🙄 A healthy cat is fine to be out overnight (various opinions on wildlife etc not withstanding).
Anyway, back to the matter in hand. I think your routine is perfectly acceptable but I would as it is almost exactly the same as mine! My opinion on guests is that they fit into the household routine without complaint. Especially close friends and family.
I think your friend perhaps felt that you keeping on top of your home so 'easily' reflected poorly on her, especially as she complains about not being able to keep on top of her home. It is easier for her to drag you down to her level than for her to aspire to be at yours perhaps?

only on MN are most of the posters bleaching their kitchen counters every morning, having cleaned them the evening before

I agree the friend probably was feeling that way - jealous maybe, or inferior

I still think OP's routine is rigid as hell!

HelenHywater · 01/03/2026 13:36

Only on Mumsnet could a thread about your morning routine turn into an attack on your treatment of your cat.

I think it sounds very efficient - I have to spread my morning chores out over 2 coffees.
