Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

My waste toilet water goes to a sewage plant not into a river! And a drop of bleach is not responsible for damaging aquatic life!!

Thanks for the laugh though...i feel like im in the twilight zone

You need to watch Dirty Business on Channel 4. It documents the scandal of water companies dumping raw untreated sewage into rivers and seas on a daily basis Killing wildlife. It is utterly shocking and yes it is like the Twilight Zone. Utterly horrifying!

hettie · 01/03/2026 13:59

Ummmm...well you can do what you like in your house obviously, but maybe your guest doesn't like being woken up so early. Maybe they don't like doing chores in the morning and fancies a chat/doomscroll. Each to their own. I don't have a morning routine let alone one that involves any domestic chores. Unless having breakfast before work counts?

Loos yes, but kitchen counters? They aren't smeared with faeces multiple times a day they might have a few crumbs on them that's it! They don't need strong chemicals.
Even if you are preparing stuff like meat you surely use a chopping board?

And what's the point bleaching counters unless you are bleaching all your plates, mugs etc.... Those are what you eat off not the counter.

Yeah fair point, although I do think kitchen work surfaces are generally included on the usage instructions on a bleach bottle. I don't do it myself granted but I do antibac the kitchen tops at the end of the day shutting down the kitchen after dishes all washed up.

Those kinds of jobs are small acts of service for yourself to give you a bright start to thr day and a more organised day. I love throwing open the windows and letting the fresh air in. She's ride to suggest you need to chill as doing those jobs for a mere 20 mins means you can chill!

Auroraloves · 01/03/2026 14:08

I think it’s fine and these most of things should be done daily anyway.

Do you work and if so what time do you leave?

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 01/03/2026 14:09

Nothing wrong with your routine at all, OP. I’m also an early riser and I get up an hour earlier than I technically need to because I take the first hour to have a coffee in bed and browse on my phone (usually Mumsnet).

I then get up, sort the pets, get showered, put a wash on and put the dried dishes away. I also open all the windows, but after I’ve showered because I’m such a wimp when it comes to the cold and the winter in Scotland has seemed never ending this year 😂.

I WFH and I like having this routine because it allows me to start my day feeling relaxed and organised.

Edited to add: I have a similar routine on the weekends, although that’s when I do my “main” housework, so what I do after getting up will look a bit different, but I still take that first hour for my coffee in bed, and I wake up at the same time.

I sometimes try to have a lie in on weekends, but I’m a natural early riser and 7am is a lie in to me. 6 am is not early to be waking up during the week, like some suggest.

Uticary · 01/03/2026 14:09

Very very normal and similar to many people.
I like to leave everything in absolute order at night time, before bed, so I come down to it in the morning.
Tell her stay elsewhere if she doesn't like it!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 01/03/2026 14:12

You are using waay too much bleach 😱

minipie · 01/03/2026 14:13

No issues with your cat, if he has a catflap and chooses not to use it he’s clearly happy!

The bleach every morning is grim. I wouldn’t want kitchen surfaces that had been freshly bleach sprayed, smelly and toxic.

dailyconniptions · 01/03/2026 14:13

Yanbu to do your routine exactly as you choose. Seems perfectly sensible. Yabu however, to say 'was sat' when it's 'was sitting'.

ElizabethFryIsSpinning · 01/03/2026 14:14

Is the cat outside all night?

Kokonimater · 01/03/2026 14:15

All that bleach, and washing machine on every day just for you? Do you care about the environment at all?

PTSDBarbiegirl · 01/03/2026 14:16

Tbh I'd just not have them to stay again! Your comfort is in routine and it's your home so, nah.....there's nothing weird about it.

PGmicstand · 01/03/2026 14:17

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 11:27

To those saying no need to bleach kitchen surfaces daily...i strongly disagree.

And its bleach spray not neat but surely the toilet and kitchen should be cleaned daily?

I like fresh air for 10mins daily to air the house or it smells stale.

Obviously this is a routine that works for you but no, I don't clean anything daily (other than myself).

JFC.....is that comment supposed to be helpful?! Maybe you could share some of your own habits...do you ever use AI, for example...

Good for you OP!
I wish I had your discipline and my house wouldnt be such a shit hole 🙈

TittyGajillions · 01/03/2026 13:57

I guess it depends how long they've been left and what kind of worktops you have, I've never needed to use bleach to wipe up spilt tea.

Pale quartz. Materials like quartz and granite can take bleaching no problems. I have to use a dot most days as my husband causes multiple tea and coffee stains a day

faerylights · 01/03/2026 14:19

singthing · 01/03/2026 13:27

If I was staying at a friend's and they started bustling round bleaching everything in sight, opening all the windows, putting bins out and the washing machine on, I'd take it as a clear sign they were desperate for me to leave!

OP may as well have handed her coat and shoes to her on her way back from all the toilet bleaching.

Yep, totally agree with you.

Tink3rbell30 · 01/03/2026 14:21

Yes. What are you doing in your toilets for them to need bleaching everyday? Does the cat go on the kitchen worktops for them to need bleaching? How do you accumulate so much rubbish for it to need emptying everyday?

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/03/2026 14:22

I’m up at 6.30 bit that first hour is a dog walk followed by a coffee. I couldn’t be doing with sorting housework that early. I find it strange that your guest was also up so early and would struggle with you bustling around while I tried to wake up. Your routine clearly suits you but I’d have relaxed it a bit if I had a friend staying.

Alpacajigsaw · 01/03/2026 14:24

I don’t see what it’s got to do with your friend?

BauhausOfEliott · 01/03/2026 14:26

I think your routine sounds really quite obsessive, looking at your updates. Maybe your friend just thought you’d benefit from calming down. I also think that while your morning routine is your business, bustling around a guest like that at 6am probably made her feel a bit unwanted and in the way.

Bikergran · 01/03/2026 14:26

I get up at 7 now I'm retired, but my routine is to get up, have my breakfast, set washing machine going, take a cup of tea up to DH (also retired), then check phone until I've finished my cup of tea, get washed and dressed, then start my day. Sadly I currently have no cat to feed. I think your friend is just rude and lazy.

ricketybeauty · 01/03/2026 14:27

Nothing wrong with the morning routine - that’s what mine would look like if the kids weren’t up bothering me.

Probably a bit unreasonable of you both to be snapping at one another though

Sounds perfectly normal to me, and why was guest even up at 6 am? I like my guests to stay in bed and out of the way till at least 8 am.
