Is my morning routine too rigid?

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 10:52

Feeling upset and questioning myself.
Im an early riser, 6am everyday.

My routine is as folliws
Let cat in and feed him
Open all curtains/blinds snd windows to air the house
Make a coffee and whilst waiting for kettle il bleach the toilets, kitchen surfaces. Empty dishwasher.
Put a load of washing.on
Make bed
Put rubbish out

This takes max 20 mins and i feel relaxed when all done.

My mate is staying and snapped at me to just sit down and chill. However she was just sat, glued to her phone. She always moans she doesnt have time to keep on top of her housework.

I snapped and said if you didn't spend so much time on your phone you could do your jobs easily.
Was i in the wrong and does my routine sound odd and rigid?

Ah. Cross post. Well if he won’t use the car flap then I suppose there is not much you can do.

Tuliptana · 01/03/2026 11:58

The cat has a cat flap and has for 7 years.
Even if its raining, he will not use it!
He sleeps in the day...thats his routine.

For those hinting at animal cruelty, my cat is perfectly well.

Our cat will only use the cat flap in one direction. We still need to let her in every day.

Bearbookagainandagain · 01/03/2026 12:01

I like to drink coffee and relax, but I really don't care what anyone else is doing as long as they leave me in peace...
I really don't understand why she would care!

climbintheback · 01/03/2026 12:02

Cats aren’t nocturnal they should be in at night - they are not native and our wildlife don’t stand a chance!

Try telling him that!

I clean kitchen surfaces daily but not with bleach. Toilets should be cleaned regularly and I do this twice a week at least, more if necessary, but daily seems OTT to me. I think your routine sounds quite rigid if it couldn't be relaxed while you have a guest staying.

TheJaqual · 01/03/2026 12:08

I wouldn’t be opening windows at 6am - I do that later when it’s warmed up a bit.

I also wouldn’t use bleach on kitchen surfaces. Antibacterial, yes but not bleach as it taints.

I also bleach the toilets at night not in the morning.

I don’t do a load of washing every day either. But that does depend on how many live in the house.

AngryBird6122 · 01/03/2026 12:11

Have you already cleaned the surfaces the night before? If so why the need to bleach them first thing? Unless the cat was on them which you said cat was out all night so can’t? I’d find that ott and surprised you have enough washing on your own for everyday. I doubt I’d say anything if I was a guest but I foresee potential issues if you ever plan on living with someone. It does sound a bit rigid.

I am damaging the environment by using bleach spray!

Got to love Mumsnet haha

There's nothing wrong with your daily routine (except maybe using too much bleach) but if your friend was asleep on the sofa, then you came in and started opening the curtains, opening the windows, going out to the bin etc I can understand why she'd be a bit pissed off. It's 6am on a Sunday morning.

Cats are hunters. Hunters hunt at night 😂

Im a vet and my cat chooses to go out and stay out all night. He knocks on the door when he’s ready to come back in.

Get a grip giving OP a hard time about it

canklesmctacotits · 01/03/2026 12:28

The only shocking part of your question is that you have a guest in your home who thinks it’s acceptable to snap at her host for…being a host! Whilst on her phone! If she doesn’t like it, she can go elsewhere, surely?

Happyjoe · 01/03/2026 12:30

It's hardly a huge list of tasks you take and if an early riser, go for it. Have to sort out the cat anyway, they're important...

I think your friend was being unreasonable, I guess you wouldn't have snapped if she'd not goaded you? We all live how we want to live.

Lilactimes · 01/03/2026 12:32

are you me OP? 😅

GoldilocksIsALittleSod · 01/03/2026 12:32

Only on mn would a thread about a cleaning routine become about whether a sodding cat is out overnight (sorry, I'm sure the sodding cat is lovely! ).
Cats will find somewhere warm and comfortable if needed. They don't just sit there and freeze themselves to death 🙄 A healthy cat is fine to be out overnight (various opinions on wildlife etc not withstanding).
Anyway, back to the matter in hand. I think your routine is perfectly acceptable but I would as it is almost exactly the same as mine! My opinion on guests is that they fit into the household routine without complaint. Especially close friends and family.
I think your friend perhaps felt that you keeping on top of your home so 'easily' reflected poorly on her, especially as she complains about not being able to keep on top of her home. It is easier for her to drag you down to her level than for her to aspire to be at yours perhaps?

CoCoJones26 · 01/03/2026 12:34

Sounds fine, if a bit obsessive....better than spending hours on your phone anyway!

Snoken · 01/03/2026 12:46

The most unreasonable thing here is that you are pouring bleach into the toilets every day. It will not only damage your plumbing but you are polluting the water and harming aquatic life. It's fine to use occasionally but pouring it in every day is hugely irresponsible and completely unnecessary unless you eat from the toilet.

What did you expect? Pat on the back for writing out a bullet list of your issues?

Distantscreamsfortoast · 01/03/2026 12:49

Your house. Your routine. I use white vinegar instead of bleach. But your guest has very poor manners.

ThatThisThatYou · 01/03/2026 12:52

I’ve one cat that goes out all night and sleeps all day. I’ve another one that does the opposite. Before humans came along cats survived outside just fine without houses. That’s why they have fur, surely!

Heyhelga · 01/03/2026 12:52

You are simply multi tasking getting things done as you go whilst the kettle is boiling. Sounds fine to me. I would also say those chores are the daily basics give or take - MN seems to like to shame anyone who likes to live in a tidy environment for some reason. Of course don't beat yourself up if you don't tick everything off on your to-do list and give yourself leeway to enjoy the odd ly-in or morning off. Basically whatever works for you.

Pinkissmart · 01/03/2026 12:53

Sounds like you have your morning routine and so does she?

Perhaps neither of you are social in the morning?

Just apologise and let it go

Isthisit2025 · 01/03/2026 12:56

Can’t believe some of the responses on here. Bloody hilarious!! If I were your friend I would most probably say “let me help” or at least make your coffee for you as she was already up.

Your routine is your routine. As you were🫡
