@38thparallel people pay huge amounts (to them) to come here in small boats etc. I assume many of them will know that it isn’t utopia

Except that is rarely want happens - sponsors take passports for the majority of the labourers and thus they are trafficked as they cannot freely leave. Maids are the same.

@MyOpenGoldKoala If lowly paid workers from overseas are basically held prisoner in Dubai, then surely this information must spread around their home countries with low paid workers telling their fellow countrymen the reality of working there.
Are they not deterred by this?

nice victim blaming! I’m sure they would avoid Dubai if they had any other choice!

Is there data on what % of this workforce is exploited? Over time have things improved? All the stuff I see says that things are improving with reforms in place. Are they the majority or a sizeable minority?

I did meet my family's house help in Dubai. She was treated well, had her passport and her kids were also with her in Dubai.

The majority of lowly paid people in Dubai do not have access to their own visa or passport as they are held with their Emirati sponsor (or with their family sometimes) but very rarely with the person themselves.

It's illegal. It is still happening but they are cracking down on that

This is basically what I needed to know.

You could say a similar thing about people’s desire to move to America. People want to go there so badly because they seem to have the perception that their lives will be like Sex in the City but so many Americans are living in poverty. My dh’s mother went to live in America (illegally) when she was young and she just lied to her family and friends back home about how successful her life was in the Big Apple. She is still doing is sixty years later.

I’m not blaming them for working there - far from it. What I thought might be a deterrent is if, as has been mentioned, they are trapped there indefinitely without a passport. How long are they held without access to their passport?

Will ICE deport her?

For many as long as they are capable of labour.

Also people come to UK thinking the streets are paved with gold.
As I said, I fully realise why people would go to work in Dubai - it’s the prospect of being trapped indefinitely in a foreign country that must be seriously grim and frightening.

They may not have a choice .Especially if the choice is 'Your money or your life'

They've also arrested two IRGC sleeper cells in Qatar

No, she got citizenship when Obama had an amnesty. She has worked as a nurse the whole time she was there. She’s retired now.

One whole flight from Oman from the British government for vulnerable people already registered in UAE who are in Oman. Apparently.

LIZS · 04/03/2026 08:26

There are several flights due out of Dubai today to UK and European destinations.
