Is there data on what % of this workforce is exploited? Over time have things improved? All the stuff I see says that things are improving with reforms in place. Are they the majority or a sizeable minority?

I did meet my family's house help in Dubai. She was treated well, had her passport and her kids were also with her in Dubai.

People want to go there so badly because they seem to have the perception that their lives will be like Sex in the City but so many Americans are living in poverty. My dh’s mother went to live in America (illegally) when she was young and she just lied to her family and friends back home about how successful her life was in the Big Apple. She is still doing is sixty years later.

I’m not blaming them for working there - far from it. What I thought might be a deterrent is if, as has been mentioned, they are trapped there indefinitely without a passport. How long are they held without access to their passport?

As I said, I fully realise why people would go to work in Dubai - it’s the prospect of being trapped indefinitely in a foreign country that must be seriously grim and frightening.
