Little sympathy for anyone who chooses to go to Dubai

What a disgusting shitty comment! I passed through Dubai to travel to Australia a few weeks ago which is what thousands of people do every day.
My son's friend is in Dubai for a work conference and is fucking terrified! What made you think that comment was ok?

Yes, isn't it!

I wouldn't holiday there, but I have transited there in the past.

I have a friend who lives there on & off, but thankfully she's not there at the moment.

I feel very sorry for anyone there who is scared & wants to leave & for anyone who has loved ones there 💕

The vipers and such always come out. 🤦‍♀️

Looks like somebody left the gate open on the Smug Dickhead enclosure this evening.

Whatever one thinks of that country, it’s really quite revealing for anybody to choose to use this thread as a halo-polishing exercise in mocking people in a frightening, very real, emergency.

💯

My thought exactly with the AH for posting the, I don't feel sorry for anyone comment. 🙄

PrincessofWells · 01/03/2026 02:12

Hope you're OK Op. Just sit tight, avoid going out and I suspect things will calm down over the next few days and you'll be on your way home soon.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 01/03/2026 02:29

People should be very skeptical about the news reports coming from UAE media - they are minimising what is happening on the ground.

I'm not dictating what you should write on this topic on MN I'm saying this thread isn't the place for am ethical debate.
I don't think pp should have brought up apartheid either, it's not the place for it on this thread, where people are in physical fear...

Perhaps the poster feels some empathy for Ops position as her husband has had a lucky escape.

I suspect that depends on social class and whether you're male . . .

perhaps? But, you must agree it's wide open to interpretation? 😁

Lordofmyflies · 01/03/2026 03:39

Oman Air does have flights leaving Muscat but they are subject to delays and changes. It maybe worth seeing if that is an option?

FloofBunny · 01/03/2026 03:48

I see the virtue-signallers are out in force. 🙄 A quick Google tells me that the Dubai gov is doing the most in the region to address modern slavery in the Middle East and has been since 2018. Source: walkfree.org.

Besides, if you only went on holiday to places that had committed no crimes against humanity, you wouldn't have many places to go. I wonder how many virtue-signallers have been to the likes of China or have enjoyed themselves in parts of the world where luxury sits along grinding poverty, like the Caribbean? Hopefully they only holiday in whiter-than-white destinations, like Switzerland. No, wait. They were no help in the war and in fact hid Nazi money and looted artifacts.

Better stick to the Lake District!

But that's in England with their huge history of colonialism. What about the moon? Is that safe?

I always said I'd never holiday in dubai and I hope everyone who said it was perfectly safe for tourism / work / living all feel stupid now.
Only themselves to blame if they feel scared. Its not like we didn't know Dubai was at risk - the Middle East has always been volatile. Plus I'd be scared to even fart with all the rules they have in place.
DD is studying teacher training and so many young people go there to teach if they can't get jobs (we're in Scotland so lots of graduates are like only 21). I'd be pulling my hair out if my child were stuck there today. Fortunately, she agreed months ago it wouldn't be something she ever did, she'd sooner just cut grass.

This is America's doing, so not actually a ME leader at all. You could surely say the same about all the people who have ever visited countries near Russia, or Ukraine, or anywhere that has been affected by violence, like Egypt, or the former Yugoslavian countries. Plus, millions and millions of people have visited Dubai and come home in one piece! I think your opinions on the place are quite limiting. (Obviously I would not suggest going there at the moment!!)

It's one missile on a building, and probably a few days' delay to peoples' holidays. Yes it's worrying, but not on the scale of Gaza or other areas of the world. I'm more shocked by the Israeli missile strike on the Iranian school killing 100+ civilians.
That said, I'd like to see regime change in Iran as it's an awful, wicked government. Although if the Iranians could knock out a few US warships and planes- just equipment, no humans- and possibly Netanyahu and some of the more extremist members of his cabinet before losing, even better. Regime change in Iran could be the one good thing either Trump or Netanyahu achieves, but if they get a bloody nose whilst doing it, it might make either man think twice before engaging in more military madness.

TLDR: I want them all to lose, but Iran to lose more.

And you actually believe the Iranian regime? Which has just finished massacring tens of thousands of their own civilians.
Most reports are saying it was a failed IGRC missile launch.

sabababa · 01/03/2026 05:13

Dont panic but prepare. This might blow over quickly but could get worse.
You need to identify the safest place, a room as far as possible from external windows. In a hotel or apartment, an internal stair well. Go there as soon as rhere is an alarm, sleep there if possible.
Get in touch with embassy in case evacuation is needed.
When you can, go out and get essentials: water, food, batteries, torch etc
Im sure itll be fine but these are difficult times and Iran has shown they have no boundaries.

I'm pretty sure the gay people who are arrested in Dubai think it's a bit shit there as well.

Oh, give over! Tourism supports many local people.

I can't imagine letting politics dictate my every move.

Rattletattles · 01/03/2026 06:00

No let up it seems, fighter jets going back and forth all night, and loud explosions when they intercept missiles and drones. it’s so scary for anyone there, little kids must be terrified.

Hope it’s over soon.

FloofBunny · 01/03/2026 06:00

ZoeCM · 28/02/2026 22:43

100% this. If MN had been around in the 80s, white women would have been posting here about what a wonderfully ethical holiday destination South Africa was, and how apartheid was really no big deal.

This white woman would not, thank you very much.

My late father was in South Africa for work in the late Fifties/early Sixties, and he was very uncomfortable with apartheid. Did not like it at all.

Most people can tell right from wrong and humane treatment from inhumane no matter the era, their sex, or the colour of their skin. 🙄 Appalling post.

No. Only the rich can go there. Via Richard Branson, I heard!

Australia, Canada, and the US are all off-limits. It's all stolen land.

Derision. That's the word I was searching for.
Yes, I agree with you. It seems too difficult for some to take a step back and think actual people that were just recently going about their lives are now dead, or injured, or just plain terrified. And people posting are looking for answers when they're in crisis. Some may be alone and in need of a connection fgs.

Mvxc · 01/03/2026 07:01

Carla786 · 28/02/2026 22:28

Exactly, and as pps have pointed out, many were travelling through the airport and didn't even expect to be stuck in Dubai. That's the problem with plane stopovers- you destination may be safe but the stopover may not be.

I was thinking exactly this, I've been through Dubai and Doha countless times on the way to and from Hong Kong & Bangkok.
People don't deserve moral judgement for being there.
