£1.89 a gallon that wasn't a little while ago - it would have been the 1970s, when a packet of 20 tipped cigarette was the same price. Now cigarette are how much for 20 and a gallon of petrol is £5.76 so very cheap compared to cigarettes

You're a bit off there.

Cigarettes weren't £1.89 for 20 in the 1970s. In the early 1970s they were 25p to 35p for 20, and in the late 1970s they were 45p to 55p. It was the early to mid1990s before cigarettes were almost £2.00 for a pack of 20.

Petrol was 70p to 80p a gallon in the mid 1970s, not £1.89. That is early to mid 1990s prices.

You're fairly close with the price of a gallon of petrol NOW though! Grin Depends where you live. In my little market town it would be around £5.70 a gallon, in a few towns not far away, it would be 50p to 80p a gallon more.

As an aside, I don't understand how ANYone can afford to smoke. It's £17-£18 for a pack of 20 now! 😱

I have lots of soup due to being ‘not quite myself’ a while ago and food shopping while delirious.

That's reminded me of when i went shopping for the first time in about week after having a hellish throat infection and went very wrong by the Ben & Jerry's 😬

Yes, I've bought more chocolate buttons.

Very remote so we try to keep the cars topped up. Saves a specific journey to the garage if they get low.

We always have a few weeks of supplies. No panic buying and not related to the Middle East. Could be snow. Russia. Etc. We live further east. Also grow a lot of fruit (benefit of being remote we do have some land) - mainly to have fresh food around the house, but great to avoid pesticides and fungicides, plus air miles. Planting fruit trees and berry canes should really be encouraged. Great for pollinators. Plus the UK imports most of its fruit.

Used to live in the Middle East. Feel so sorry about the innocent loss of life.

It sounds a bit like those post apocalyptic shows (Walking Dead etc) where the cars can drive at speed for hundreds of miles without any concern about petrol.

I agree with others that you need to have a bicycle, or in fact one for each member of the family. If the kids or gran can't keep up well that's their problem.

More seriously I would also get a few cross bows and stock up on arrows. Easier to learn to be accurate than a long bow and you can recycle the arrows. And get a few really good sling shots for when the arrows run out. Handy for both defense and hunting.

And a really good (non electric!) tin opener. Nothing worse than finding an full stocked supermarket and not be able to get at your Heinz beans.

I can't ride a bike 😭. I'm doomed aren't I.

Threads like this make me despair. "Prepping" is the worst sort of inward-looking, self-centred, self-referential, self-conscious, selfish, smug, dweeby, 'I'm-alright-Jack' response to something like this. Exactly the same sort of person who washes their towels after every single use, and to hell with the environment.

I hope these people can rest easy in their beds (no doubt with freshly-laundered sheets) knowing that they have stockpiled enough four-ply feather-soft Andrex to last them and their little family for a year.

You are talking about stockpiling, which is selfish. But making sure your family could go without power for a couple of days isn't selfish!

gototogo · 28/02/2026 17:49

Buy loo rolls Grin

seriously, nothing, filling the car up is potentially sensible to avoid people panicking next week but unless you want to import a specific product from the Middle East you’ll be fine

Yes, I've bought more chocolate buttons.

You get more chocolate for your money buying bars. I study these things carefully. Such is the life of an addict.

I’m going to keep on retweeting Trump’s speech in support of the USA’s actions.

And order a takeaway.

For reasons too dull to explain i had 2 full ikea bags of my favourite pasta at the start of covid before the lockdown started.

Other people were struggling to get hold of it and i was giving mine away to friends, family and colleagues (I worked all through it)

I promised myself I would never ridiculously overstock pasta again, but my new favourite brand just had a really good offer......

Looking forward to being popular again once the panic buying starts 😁

I get bollocked by DP everytime there's a vaguely reasonable (ie, only twice the price instead of 4-5 times) offer on gluten free pasta.

Well, I say bollocked. He does it in a sneaky way - every meal he makes, he mixes up the shapes. And if he's really, really annoyed at having to find homes for 16 bags and 8 boxes of assorted types, he snaps the long pasta into pieces before boiling it.

Doesn't seem to have an issue with 5kg bags of short grain rice, for some reason, though.

It is highly unlikely power will be cut off here due to the war. OTOH it is very likely to be cut off in Iran and Israel.

I struggle with this, I've never smoked, never drunk alcohol, never done drugs so why aren't I rich? I know I buy too much chocolate but that pretty cheap in comparison.

Maybe it's the four kids and eight GC. Too late to do anything about that now.

OP, you are getting a bit of a hard time from people who are not worried and who are not making preparations. None of that helps you and the reason that led you to put a post on here.

I do have a few suggestions and they do not include stocking up on toilet roll.

First, write down what you’re frightened about, what you are worried will happen and why it is that those particular fears are getting to you at the moment. Just take 15 minutes to write that all out.

Second, find someone you can talk to about your fears. I have a friend in a similar situation and she talks to a close neighbour, a man who is older than her and he calms her down. You need to talk to someone. As I read things, you are on your own, worried about your other half and worried about how you will cope. That’s completely understandable.

There are other things you can do. You can look at Preppers websites, in fact I think there’s a Preppers thread on MN. I don’t suggest you go down the lines that they go of getting generators, bags that can store food for up to 10 years without it deteriorating, ground sheets and goodness news what else including digging shelters in the garden. However, you can do little things and those threads might give you some ideas.

One of these might be making sure that you have a set of rechargeable batteries, that they are charged up and that you have a charger to charge them up again. Make sure you have a good torch that they fit into and that you know where to find it.

You could get some tins of food in. You could get a water purifier such as a Water To Go bottle.

Write down what you’re worried about and write down what you can do about these things. Also, I suggest that you have a think about where your fears are coming from.

Best wishes. You are not alone and please do not take to heart the supercilious and jokey comments that are on here. I understand that you are worried and anxious and many people will be feeling the same.

Finally, as an afterthought,I suggest that you do not listen to the news or read newspapers. This is an approach taken by many people and it takes you out of the sphere of unnecessary worrying.

Peacexbliss · 28/02/2026 17:54

I'm talking about stockpiling, yes, but also the whole sanctimonious "look at how clever I am buying an extra tin of soup every week" performative, self-satisfied crap that seems to go with this trend (for want of a better word). It just makes me cringe.
