Are you joking?

I still have a man to do it at my rural garage. It’s a slightly higher price per litre, but no stinky hands or sweaty plastic gloves, and I get to feel like Lady Penelope for 20 seconds.

If the Iran mess puts paid to that, I’ll be using my very hardest stare on the Ayatollah.

You show him, what about Trump? Isn't he getting a stare.

Important question:
Is it still ok for me to have a Persian carpet?

No and I think we all need to ban the movie Aladdin as well.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 28/02/2026 15:43

FFS what are you talking about? How is filling up the car with fuel going to make a damn bit of difference to anything?

Edited

Fuck sake, why did this trigger you so much?

TheignT · 28/02/2026 17:09

Besafeeatcake · 28/02/2026 17:07

No and I think we all need to ban the movie Aladdin as well.

Oh no. How will I entertain GS? This is getting serious.

And yes I'm one of those evil grandmothers who let kids watch screens.

Sensiblesal · 28/02/2026 17:20

Please go back & fill up 10 portable fuel cans, store in garage.
a years supply of andrex should be next.

buy as many tinned products as you can just in case.

the adults realise we don’t need to panic buy anything

BatchCookBabe · 28/02/2026 17:21

@Olympeagal

No. I am doing nothing different at all. I don't see why I should.

Hysteria and panic will help no-one.

Petrol station usually only allow customers to fill up two containers

@Tikitaka20 i am reading and trying to stay calm.
Thankyou for your measured reply. I did not realise the Dubai hotel had been hit by missile debris and was not an intended tsrget. Although this does illustrate how serious this situation is now.

My partner is now in Asia. He travelled from Kuwait but his flts and next job route him back through the Middle East. Unlikely to happen now, i guess its a wait and see situation. This is why im so on edge.
For those calling me selfish, if it was your husband/partner you may feel the same.

As for some of the sarcastic food stockpiling digs, i never once mentioned it.

Well, my husband lives and works in Riyadh. We lived in Dubai for many years and have lots of friends in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain...

What will panicking and filling your car with petrol do to help keep your partner safe in Asia? You are just winding yourself up into a frenzy. Take a deep breath and avoid the news for a while. Iran are just posturing, again. They won't do too much to actively damage civilians in Islamic countries for fear of backlash from countries that are mostly neutral. Their actions are aimed at US facilities that mostly have early warning systems and will avoid much damage. The hotel in Dubai was not targeted, it was an unfortunate side effect of the missile being shot down.

ManukaMoneyMaker · 28/02/2026 17:25

OP you've had a rough ride on here. You mentioned your DH had been in Kuwait. The UK Government issued shelter in place for there. Hearing that, and knowing how close he had been to it, must have been really frightening, no wonder you're anxiety is through the roof. Try to do some calming things to help you until he gets home safe. Breathing techniques, baths, comfort food, walks to burn off adrenaline.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 28/02/2026 17:25

I panic bought luxury skincare, makeup and fragrance when COVID looked like it was going to wipe out Italy and France. Still working my way through the foundation mountain 😂

SmudgeButt · 28/02/2026 17:26

It sounds a bit like those post apocalyptic shows (Walking Dead etc) where the cars can drive at speed for hundreds of miles without any concern about petrol.

I agree with others that you need to have a bicycle, or in fact one for each member of the family. If the kids or gran can't keep up well that's their problem.

More seriously I would also get a few cross bows and stock up on arrows. Easier to learn to be accurate than a long bow and you can recycle the arrows. And get a few really good sling shots for when the arrows run out. Handy for both defense and hunting.

And a really good (non electric!) tin opener. Nothing worse than finding an full stocked supermarket and not be able to get at your Heinz beans.

ThisCantBeRightCanIt · 28/02/2026 17:33

I'm not paticularly an anxious or worried person but I am a bit of a light prepper. (Think Less zombie apocalypse and more power cuts and storms)

This doesn't worry any more than the usual news. I always keep the car at least half full I think it's sensible.

If your thinking about being more prepared the gov website has a section of what each household should do. It's a decent guide.

https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/

Being prepared for emergencies should make you feel like anxious and allow you to carry on with you day to day life. If you find it actually feeds your anxiety then please don't fall down that Internet rabbit hole and just dont prep!

There is always a risk when traveling abroad but unless you or dp is traveling somewhere ridiculous then you need to accept that a happy and fulfilled life includes some risk

There's is a prepper board on mn but it's not to active

Prepare - Prepare

Find out how to prepare for an emergency in your area. There are simple and effective steps you can take to be more prepared.

WonderingWanda · 28/02/2026 17:34

Excellent all the people that drive about 5 miles a year are going to fill their tanks up and then there won't be any fuel left!

auserna · 28/02/2026 17:35

Threads like this make me despair. "Prepping" is the worst sort of inward-looking, self-centred, self-referential, self-conscious, selfish, smug, dweeby, 'I'm-alright-Jack' response to something like this. Exactly the same sort of person who washes their towels after every single use, and to hell with the environment.

I hope these people can rest easy in their beds (no doubt with freshly-laundered sheets) knowing that they have stockpiled enough four-ply feather-soft Andrex to last them and their little family for a year.

HappyFace2025 · 28/02/2026 17:35

Olympeagal · 28/02/2026 15:27

The petrol station was busy and its obvious oil prices will sky rocket if the situation remains so unstable.
I will admit i am very anxious. My partner is an engineer snd was in Kuwait only 3 weeks ago. Thankfully he is now in Asia but with flights being cancelled, i do worry how he will get home. Such an awful situation .

Edited

Yes it is an awful situation .. for those directly involved IE Iranians, Israelis and people living in other ME countries subject to the war. No doubt your partner will be able to get home by Not flying over a war zone. HTH

Quite. Although I won't be surprised if you're told off for not putting a trigger warning on your post.

Most can have the rings on the cans these days?

100% this.

HappyFace2025 · 28/02/2026 17:38

Good point!

Because heaven forbid someone should have to see a post or read a news article about something awful that other people are actually living through and which barely affects you in the slightest.

Isekaied · 28/02/2026 17:42

HappyFace2025 · 28/02/2026 17:37

100% this.

But this isn't prepping

This is panic buying.

Prepping done right doesn't affect the supply chain and is done way in advance of any emergency situations.

For reasons too dull to explain, I have about 8 tins of tomato soup in the cupboard, so I'll be OK for a bit 🍅

For reasons too dull to explain i had 2 full ikea bags of my favourite pasta at the start of covid before the lockdown started.

Other people were struggling to get hold of it and i was giving mine away to friends, family and colleagues (I worked all through it)

I promised myself I would never ridiculously overstock pasta again, but my new favourite brand just had a really good offer......

Looking forward to being popular again once the panic buying starts 😁

Isekaied · 28/02/2026 17:43

I need to buy a load of pasta.

As my kids school is collecting for the food banks.

So was planning on buying a few packs of pasta.

BatchCookBabe · 28/02/2026 17:46

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 28/02/2026 16:52

Why, are you planning to drive there?

😆 🚗
