'Being Gordon Ramsay' featuring dead pig!

Ffs! I'm just watching this Netflix show about Gordon Ramsay and his opening of a new restaurant with amazing views in the city. I'm not interested in him particularly, but thought I might go to this 'Lucky Cat' just for the views over London, if and whenever it opens.

BUT - then there is a scene where he is consulting with his head chef about the menu and there is a whole dead baby suckling pig on a plate. They are talking about making this a restaurant feature, requiring two chefs who carve it at your table.

AIBU to think this is obscene? Yes, I'm vegetarian, but I think even most meat eaters would balk at this?

If I were in his restaurant and that was going at the the next table, I would leave. Wtf is wrong with humans?

I think you can technically eat any meat, can’t you?

Probably, I'm just curious if anyone does!

I've heard penguin tastes horrible.

Can eat anything once. Might not survive but 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

Except humans eating human meat is dangerous and can kill us.

Don’t avoid the question. Address your own moral and logical inconsistency.

I'd try dolphin. I've had shark meat before - it didn't taste of much though!

Don't be facetious. Do you, as a warm-blooded sentient being, have the potential to experience pain or fear in the same way as other large mammals? Or are you claiming to be no different to an oyster?

I think you’ve got more in common with a shrimp at this point OP.

You know that no one is going to magically stop eating or serving meat so realistically you should be pleased that Lucky Cat is encouraging nose to tail eating and not contributing to the waste of slaughtered animals because people get picky and upset.

manateeplushie · 27/02/2026 18:44

I’m a lifelong veggie and abhor the suffering of animals, but I would expect a show about a very meat-based, Scottish chef to contain meat? It’s hardly a big shock

paloma7 · 27/02/2026 18:44

I obviously eat in restaurants all the time where meat is served to other customers. My DH will sometimes order meat, as du my parents and all manner of people everywhere. Obviously.

Nevertheless, I would draw the line at sitting in a restaurant if there was a whole suckling pig on a trolley being carved up like some kind of 'wow' moment for the table next to me. I think I would probably leave.

I will not be going there anyway - the man is a tosser.

That’s nothing compared with the hypocrisy of cooing over little baa lambs, ignoring that they’ll be shoved on a lorry to go the abattoir in a few weeks.

Then insisting that Welsh and English lamb tastes better than imported lamb

Actually Scotch lamb is superior.

What inconsistency?

Animals aren't humans and I'm not going to try and debate with people who are ridiculous enough to believe they're the same.

Yes. YANBU. Saying “meat eaters know where meat comes from” is stating the obvious and missing the point.

It is a spectacle of suffering. It’s odd how the worse the ethics of a product are - e.g. real fur, foie gras - the more “luxurious” it is considered. As if it’s considered more authentic and traditional because more suffering has happened.

In Taiwan, they have a dish of a live, cooked fish. Its organs are selectively removed and it’s lightly cooked to keep it alive, gasping on the plate. There’s no culinary benefit but again, the suffering is the spectacle.

But where is the suffering in a suckling pig, beyond any other animal humanely slaughtered?

I wouldn’t eat that dish you mention, for the same reason I don’t eat lobster cooked in the traditional way or meat that’s been slaughtered unstunned (if I can tell). But suckling pig is basically just pork - there’s no additional suffering there.

I am sorry but "so it's fine to eat himan babies since it's fine eating baby pigs" is hilarious

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/02/2026 18:47

... also I wonder why some omnivores seem to think that eating horse is wrong (delicious) or dogs (not knowingly eaten)

So do I, @oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends, and it really does just seem to be a cultural thing

Not sure why you singled out dogs for "not knowingly eaten" though. If you've had a 10 Euro steack frites or bought mince in France (especially in the south) then trust me, you've eaten horse - though maybe not knowingly after all Grin

Ohh but apparently I'm "morally inconsistent" because I'm smart enough to realise that humans are not pigs 😂

Yeah, I think cannibalism is a step too far in most societies!

(although humans HAVE done that to survive in extreme circumstances - can’t judge them for that)

I think a lot of chip shops actually use shark.

Pricelessadvice · 27/02/2026 18:48

Have you never been somewhere with a hog roast?

LolaLeee · 27/02/2026 18:49

It’s fine for everyone to have their individual boundaries. I started my journey to plant based diet not eating babies (no lamb, baby pig ) and gradually educated myself on the meat and slaughter industry and arrived where I am today with a largely plant based diet. I do eat the family pizza every Saturday with cheese on top. I have not cracked the vegan cheese yet.

Possibly! I had it in Switzerland of all places - part of some seafood buffet thing at a hotel. I was really excited to try it but it was very disappointing, lol.

I quite like New Zealand lamb!

I’ve eaten shark, not sure which kind, didn’t taste of much IIRC.

Ilovecrispytofu · 27/02/2026 18:50

I wouldn’t like that either OP. I am vegan but don’t so much object to people seeing the whole animal - more that they are slaughtering such young animals who have had no chance at a life at all. Some people just lack empathy.

ChattyCatty25 · 27/02/2026 18:51

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/02/2026 18:37

And the others who are realistic about what those pieces of protein represent are OK with it. Admittedly, it does somewhat knock the 'stupid omnis can't handle that they're eating death' argument out of the water, which must be quite irritating for those who believed it, but, along with billions of other people who are very aware of what is required in order to have that meal, they are eating meat in a similar situation as the one humans have experienced for millennia.

If “omnis” are so comfortable with dead animals, why are they so offended by slaughterhouse and factory farm footage?

They rage and scream against completely standard animal agriculture scenes being shown publicly, such as male chicks being crushed live in a macerator.

You will see a potato harvest on TV adverts, but never an abattoir.

Oh well - go back in time 30 years and complain if it bothers you!

This is current thinking !

Your schools practice is out of touch and belongs ‘ back in time’

I love horsemeat, that's why I said delicious. I wish I could buy it in UK.

Some cultures do eat dog meat. When I visited N.Z., there was a newspaper article about a Maori family eating their pet pit bull terrier. I think it's the best thing to do with that breed.

Animals have no concept of life spans or how long they're supposed to live - it's not like they go to slaughter sobbing because they're supposed to live until 6 years instead of 6 months!
