..of asylum seekers..
On the news. Are we supposed to be impressed? They are just being shuffled elsewhere, aren't they?

France could strengthen their borders for a start, plus we are paying the French millions to stand on the shore and wave bye bye to the dinghies, no results, no more money. Clamp down on dinghy manufacturers. Stop RNLI providing a water taxi service, instead have patrol boats to escort them back to France.

With respect, it's clear you don't have the first clue about international and maritime law.

They aren’t illegal. They have the right to claim
asylum

This. They're definitely not 'illegals'.

Gingerbeersallround · 26/02/2026 18:21

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 26/02/2026 18:19

Please stop seeking to dehumanise people by referring to them as "illegals".

They are not legal. Opposite of legal is illegal. Do you prefer the US term aliens.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/02/2026 18:16

Yes, those with skills needed in the U.K. are welcome. A lot of those arriving in dinghies, will be low skilled, not have qualifications and will leech on the state

How do they leech on the state? Those here illegally don't receive benefits.

Oh sorry, I didn't realize that being low skilled meant a person could never work or be useful. Silly me.

I feel this thread comes across as an NF support thread from some Russian in Cyprus or something. Dreadful.

Again, these are people we are talking about and if you want to know who's taking all the money out of society then look up not down.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/02/2026 18:08

Whatever the accommodation they will still cost millions. If granted asylum they will then bring all their family over at even greater expense to the tax payer and strain on services.

If they are granted asylum it's because they meet the requirements for that, in line with the UK's legal commitments to take on genuine refugees. It means they have suffered extreme hardship, it's not some money making benefits scheme.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/02/2026 18:23

Pebbles16 · 26/02/2026 18:12

Is that you Nigel?
No, they won't. There are strict rules.

I find this whole thread absolutely depressing. We have welcomed refugees for 100s of years and I really hope we can continue.

What is your solution to this then? How can the U.K. house and care for these people? Those who spend years on a council waiting list rightly resent those being prioritised by councils , and receiving dental care etc which they can’t access!

But they are receiving housing, food, medical care, money for clothing etc . It’s unsustainable.

Are you saying they pay for their own housing, food and everything else?

If not, who pays?

I realise they are not able to do that at the moment - but laws need changing!

Claims should be processed more quickly, I definitely agree with that.

And people found to be here illegally should be sent home.

MissingSockDetective · 26/02/2026 18:26

Do enlighten me then- are they not being housed , fed , given medical care etc . If not who is looking after them?

Work9to5 · 26/02/2026 17:50

If they claim asylum they're not illegal until their case is decided and refused

Tell them we are full with zero spaces available for the next 10 years. Then send them home within 24 hours. Job done.

That money is a drop in the ocean, it sounds significant because the media and NF and Reform tell you it is. You are supposed to be against them and think they are to blame, and you clearly are and do.

Personally I'm proud to live in a country with people from all over the world and one that will provide shelter and a home to those most in need. I see it as a privilege that we are able to do that. I would want someone to do that for me and my family if the tables were turned.

Allseeingallknowing · 26/02/2026 18:32

I’ve read what they get in the relevant Government website. It is clear what they are provided with.

I am currently supporting a young man who is a refugee from Afghanistan. The last thing he wants is money from the council. He wants a job. He is highly motivated but also suffering from extreme PTSD from his experience in his home country.
He lives in a shared house with other refugees (ie they have been accepted by the government as legitimate) and believe me it's not a place that British people seeking accommodation would accept.
If you ask me, the people who have experienced such trauma should be supported to make the most of the opportunities this country has to offer so they can rebuild their lives and contribute (as they want to).

It is not a drop in the ocean, it is billions, an ever increasing amount that is needed in other areas. I do not support Reform and certainly not the NF.

Dollymylove · 26/02/2026 18:35

They are being put in HMOs in the community. Nobody knows who the hell.they are and if they are dangerous. There has already been incidents in my town, with HMOs in the vicinity of primary schools.
They should be put in detention centres and not permitted to roam.around freely

I agree we need immigration, but it has to be controlled and ever increasing numbers of undocumented people of unknown origin cannot be sustained. Other countries recognise this and have acted. How on earth can the U.K. be expected to house and feed thousands arriving weekly? They will not all be working, productive people. All this and other governments have done is invent expensive, unworkable and ridiculous schemes. Until numbers are reduced, there will be no way of solving the problem.
