To not understand the Wetherspoons game on social media?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:32

I occasionally see posts from a Wetherspoons game group on FB, whereby people in a branch of Wetherspoons post a photo of themselves and who they’re with, their table number, and ask strangers to buy them table-service drinks via the app.

I don’t really understand what the game element is, or what the buyers get out of this?

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone explain?

Well I'm no genius and I've never heard of this but I'd assume the game is seeing if anyone buys you a drink and the buyers get being part of the game out of it.

Jan24680 · 24/02/2026 22:35

My OH sends them a side order of peas. I am not sure there is a lot to understand.

Sometimeswinning · 24/02/2026 22:35

I mean it’s people in Wetherspoons. I tend not to give them much space in my thoughts!

Mama2many73 · 24/02/2026 22:38

I follow an American called kalani (on fb). He did this the other day and he had dozens of bowls of peas sent to him.
Ive definitely heard of some Weatherspoons refusing orders when it becomes apparent this is happening!

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 22:40

So the game element is taking the piss? Ordering them random stuff, rather than getting them what they want?

OP posts:
ValueofNothing · 24/02/2026 22:46

It's not really a game. I think people who do it simply find it funny to see the random stuff people order them. As mentioned above, a side of peas on its own is a popular choice, from what I've gathered.

It's just playful isn't it.. surprising a stranger who is out having a good time with their pals. I've seen quite a few touching examples where it might be someone who is down on their luck being sent a bottle of prosecco to cheer them up or a father and son out for the lad's 18th so strangers but him a pint. It can be quite sweet.

Flash cleavage, receive drinks and a side order of "you look gorgeous babe" from pervy old men.

I follow him as well. It was so funny. They closed the table in 3 minutes.

The random fries egg just finished me off next to all the peas.

Has nobody got any self respect any more?
Absolutely gross begging strangers for drinks.
Nothing funny about it at all.

Well why i wouldn't understand why my OH was wasting his money on , presumably, total strangers
Has he nothing better to do with his time and money ?

A I've had quite a few women over the years approach me in person with a similar proposition... despite being a fairly ugly bloke I've said no.
B ain't that what only fans girls give a lot more for (Katie Price I'm talking about you)
C fuck me if some random perv wants to buy me a cider... crack on

WimbyAce · 24/02/2026 23:17

There was one someone showed the other day where they had a miscarriage and asked for stuff. Even posted the Drs note. Pretty grim!

A. In that case, you must be giving off pervy old man vibes

It's hardly begging, is it? There's no pressure on anyone to buy anything. Often people don't get anything at all.

I don't understand what people don't get about it. It's really not that deep, or complicated.

The benefit to the drinker is potentially getting free items, and a funny story.
The benefit to the donater is a feeling of goodwill (i.e. like literally any other good deed) if they buy something nice, and a (mildly) funny joke if they buy something silly.
Both benefit from a bit of human connection from strangers they'd have otherwise never interacted with.
The benefit to wetherspoons is making money by having people who aren't even in their pub spending money.

Everyone's benefitting apart from sad losers who have nothing better to do than moan about something that doesn't affect them in the slightest.

I've never played but have seen it come up on FB a few times. The people who tend to get a lot of items usually have a funny/cute/heartwarming story that people like to donate to.

I follow him as well, it was brilliant, his friend was rough the next day 😂

If people want a feeling of goodwill why don't they donate to a charity that actually does some good in the world instead of to a bunch of freeloaders?

People who actually buy stuff for these people must have more money than sense. And Tim Martin must be laughing at how easily he can con people into parting with their money.

I wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned Kalani 😁. That was funny to watch.

They were able to share their ‘gifts’ with others, so it was enjoyed by many people. Plus, Kalani made a donation to the charity box in Wetherspoons, as a thank you for the generosity of his followers.

I did wonder what happened to all those peas though, especially as his friend detested them 🤔.

Excited101 · 24/02/2026 23:54

Oh it’s just cute op, don’t read into it. They often get a few drinks then it gets ‘closed for responsible drinking’.

JMSA · 24/02/2026 23:59

This appeared on my Facebook and I actually ended up deleting it (the Wetherspoons game), due to the amount of nasty comments!
Middle-aged men giving out hate to young women chancing their arm. I mean, the group isn’t for me and nor would I beg for drinks on it (cringe), but there is no need for what I was reading. Stuff like that often brings out certain types of men from the woodwork 🙄

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 25/02/2026 00:05

Sounds gross. Also, what a horrible waste of food to keep sending them peas and the like. 😖

Comefromaway · 25/02/2026 00:35

my kids do this but only with actual family & real life friends. I send them a drink or a dessert or some fruit.

the downside is my autistic son who is funny with food ordered fish & chips and they came with nit enough mushy peas so he ordered an extra side portion. It never came as the staff assumed it was a joke.

Yes this, it is not something I have to get as long as everyone is over 18 a person gets to sit in a pub and other people send them drinks or food if they feel like it, the person in the pub has the option to close it if they dont want anything else

I dont see an issue or anything more complicated than that

I really don’t think that’s the case at all.
its usually people trying to send very random things as a joke. Side order of peas, glass of milk, random shot etc.

Moonnstarz · 25/02/2026 07:39

I thought it was just to get free drinks. The ones I see pop up usually do involve women showing a lot of cleavage and then lots of men commenting about sending them milk but they don't need it 🙄
Others do jump on to mock the sob stories that people also post - recently been dumped, newly divorced.
The ones I see that I dislike the most are ones involving children. The parent posts a photo of the child and then gives a sob story about cannot afford to feed them or else they do the I told my child about this game (why?!!!) and they want to see if it works. Please don't let them down.
