I have no sympathy for him but this is not fair.

It would be very difficult to obtain sufficient evidence to secure a conviction that he had sex years ago with specific individuals, and that he knew those individuals were underage or coerced rather than just impressed by his fame. It appears that there might be evidence that he shared information that should have remained confidential, in relation to his role as a public official, so if that's all they can get him on, that's what they'll go for. The cost of keeping him safe in prison would be astronomical; if he gets a conviction it would be more pragmatic to make him wear a tag at home (esp. given his age) but I don't know if that would even be an option.
