Dryrobes look ridiculous - AIBU?

We are at a caravan park for half term. It’s a great place, great complex etc. but the amount of people in the complex at bowling etc wearing DryRobes and Crocs is blowing my mind 😂 why would you have such a heavy duty waterproof coat and then summer shoes with holes 😂 people’s desire to wear “trendy” over practical is honestly so funny

AIBU?

I am an extremely proud dry robe wanker. 😂
often chuck on my crocs with it when going into clubhouse after a rugby/football match and my welly’s are muddy and no dirty shoes allowed in.

its full of dryrobes x crocs/sliders.

Ineedanewsofa · 17/02/2026 16:40

Another Equidry wanker here, as per pp it gets worn with crocs if I’m ‘in transit’ as my wellies will be disgusting from the yard. I try to avoid going anywhere in my Equidry however as it stinks to high heaven! Having said that, when we’ve been camping/caravanning I do wash and reproof it to take with me so I can get around and stay dry, no other waterproof comes close for staying warm and dry

7238SM · 17/02/2026 16:43

@MayAwayDay I have an equidry (horse equivalent) and very often walk into Tesco wearing mine with crocs on, usually covered in mud too

I had to read this twice as thought you meant your horse wears a coat and goes shopping! For a second I was thinking of some sort of mini, companion horse! Clearly I've started the wine too early today. 😆

Jokethecoalwoman · 17/02/2026 17:14

I've never understood why anyone wears crocs unless they're at the beach. They're plastic beach shoes, like flip flops or sandals.
And wearing a dry robe towel as day wear looks ridiculous.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/02/2026 17:24

Camping/ caravan sites are the perfect natural habitat for crocs and dryrobes. Easy to sling on for going to toilet/ shower blocks, easy to dry in restricted circumstances.

I wore my dry robe in a car garage yesterday. I popped by post-run for a minor repair while in passing. It was warm, easy to sling on while sweating and protected the rest of the environment from my post-run sweat. It tends to live in my car boot for this kind of reason and the most likely reason for me to wear it in somewhere like a supermarket. I got it for post-swim changing but find it handy for various circumstances. I don't tend to wear it as a general coat unless it's rain that bounces upwards, and it's too voluminous to generally carry around.

Crocs are handy for slipping on/ off or getting wet. They dry far better than walking sandals/ birkenstocks.

Neither are pretty items, but sometimes function wins over style.

Surely with that attitude, mumsnet would cease to exist

Nah; just posts about what other people wear! I mean seriously, what harm are they doing. I don't own one but dont care if people wear them, more the fool them if they are taken in by marketing and pay the inflated prices.

houseofisms · 17/02/2026 17:30

I live in a Devon seaside town, wild swimming is massive here as is gigging and other water sports.
a dryrobe is essential here, as much as owning a spaniel, but….. you can tell the difference between a local and someone from outside of Devon. If they want to wear dryrobes and crocs then so be it, at least it’s in the correct locality

Bologneselove · 17/02/2026 17:36

I’ve just received my first Dryrobe which I’m looking forward to wearing after aqua class tonight, especially as it’s freezing. No more avoiding going due to dreading leaving the leisure centre when not properly dry. I’ve crocs too (very comfy) but I’ll save them for gardening 🤣

There is a facebook page/ group called 'dry robe wankers' which makes me smile.

I have one which I use for its' intended purpose, really handed for changing to go for a sea swim. When on a campsite wearing it to the shower block also makes sense.

I'd find it way to hot to wear walking the dogs though and definitely wouldn't wear it generally out and about because they're really ugly!

I think it’s creepy & mean. Taking photos of strangers without them knowing to post them online & make fun of them makes you smile?

Fifthtimelucky · 17/02/2026 18:27

Of course you are being unreasonable.

My daughter and I have been wearing ours today. We had a long walk along the beach in Cornwall. It wasn’t raining for once, and we certainly didn’t swim, but it was very cold and windy so the coats were perfect for keeping us warm and dry from the spray.

We paired them with wellies rather than crocs (the tide was out but there were lots of areas where we had to wade a bit). Being trendy was not a consideration. Our clothes could not have been more practical.

Some people may have thought we looked ridiculous. At 64 it’s a long time since I cared what anyone (least of all complete strangers) thinks of my clothing/show choices!

Hiptothisjive · 17/02/2026 18:31

Horrible detestable things.

I have many warm, dry waterproof coats that aren’t dry robe and they work fine. There are other options.

PersephonePomegranate · 17/02/2026 18:31

WilderHawthorn · 17/02/2026 13:52

I wear a dry robe when at DC’s football matches or at the showjumping yard, will also take it to the beach when we surf, but I don’t own crocs Grin

They're exactly the scenarios I can imagine they're sensible for. Also for dog walking in this non-stop rain.

Wearing them inside, not so much. They're not harming anyone though and least they're covered up!

Waywardremote · 18/02/2026 08:17

I think the Dryrobes worn with Crocs make perfect sense. Easy comfortable clothes. I don’t think they are very stylish but who cares.

MoiraPlunkett · 18/02/2026 08:21

I wouldn't say they look ridiculous - they don't flatter anyone but there's nothing wrong in prioritising comfort over style.

Anndalouzier · 18/02/2026 08:22

I managed to get three kids through competitive sport, probably over about 20 years and never saw the need for a dry robe
a north face coat yes

Mistysmom · 18/02/2026 08:24

My dry robe has been a godsend on the wet and cold football pitches over the past few years watches DS. I also use it when walking the dog.

Trendy no, but if it keeps me warm and dry, then Im happy!

Bitofashock · 18/02/2026 08:27

I got one after going through several coats a day in the torrential rain. I am warm, dry and it covers me up against the miserable weather.

Mistysmom · 18/02/2026 08:30

The only crocs I own are the slippers, I dont like the fact of wearing socks and sandals, thats a big fashion faux pas in my eyes 😂

RattleAndHump · 18/02/2026 08:31

They are brilliant if you are doing medical duty at a rugby match. Keep you warm on the touchline, you can wrap an injured player in it, and you can kneel on it while treating people. Easily washed afterwards.

EverythingGolden · 18/02/2026 08:31

I have pink crocs for camping which I wouldn’t wear anywhere else but they are extremely practical for walking on wet grass, and easy on and off.

Dragonscaledaisy · 18/02/2026 08:33

I know this is MN but these coats have been around for 16 years and you're still starting threads on them? 😂

TheGoddessAthena · 18/02/2026 08:37

There are a lot of other things I'd rather spend £175 on. And it wouldn't be the latest fashionable flash in the pan which will be "old hat" and cluttering up charity shops and VInted by autumn.

EverythingGolden · 18/02/2026 08:39

It’s just a type of coat. They don’t look any worse or better to me than other types of weatherproof coats, none of which are particularly stylish.

Christmasinmecar · 18/02/2026 08:43

They are an ugly combo, a in effect coloured duvet and crocs fgs. But each to their own🙄

Edited

I have a North Face Arctic Parka too - bought probably 15 years ago. I still wear it when it's wet and cold but a thing of beauty it is definitely not and it was subject to the same derision as the Dryrobe - are we now calling it a classic by comparison?😂
