To think the test must be wrong

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

I thought I was definitely at actual menopause being 50 and having had no periods for 14 months but this thread will definitely make me more cautious. Thanks OP and glad you've had good care so far. Hope it all goes well.

GoGoSuperBug · 17/02/2026 16:37

I’m glad everyone has been supportive and quick to get things sorted. Wishing you all the best @chillidoritto

likeafishneedsabike · 17/02/2026 16:38

THANK goodness was we live in a country where an honest mistake like this can be rectified before having a potentially devastating impact of the lives of others. I hope you come through this experience relatively unscathed, OP.

Lifealittleboulder · 17/02/2026 16:40

Oh goodness! My son’s God Mum is 65 now but she was born when her mum was 52, back then they didn’t even have pregnancy test. I don’t think that you do at home. She went to the doctor because of menopause symptoms and was told she was six months pregnant!!

Thinking of you as your process this, that’s a lot to take on board XX

MachineBee · 17/02/2026 16:40

Sending @chillidoritto much love and best wishes. I’m so pleased you’ve had supportive medics see you so quickly and positively.

just came on to echo other PPs who say sperm can linger for a while in tubes after a vasectomy. And if you need any other means of persuading your DH to do his bit, remind him you’ve already carried 5 DCs! Your body has done its bit for the family. Time for him to step up!

blueberrylady · 17/02/2026 16:50

youve been very brave in sharing this to make other women aware 💐 i hope your recovery is quick and everything goes as smoothly as possible for you and you’re back to feeling better soon🩷 sending love and strength

Jackiepumpkinhead · 17/02/2026 16:51

There seems to be a lack of understanding amongst women in their 40’s and 50’s around perimenopause and fertility. Not judging, have had a friend in the same situation.

Ladygardenerinderby · 17/02/2026 16:52

Oh gosh I bet you’re in a state of shock I would be . Get another test to confirm but you have options don’t forget that . Take care

Hope all goes well OP and salutary lesson for so many. Who'd have thunk it?

It’s extremely common, but many pregnancies at this age end in early miscarriage and as periods tend to be so irregular at this point of menopause, many women don’t realise.

I'm 50 tomorrow and my periods are still as regular as clockwork!

Marieb19 · 17/02/2026 17:28

Good luck.

To those people attacking me, I hope you never make a mistake. I have never heard of anyone my age having a baby / getting pregnant and my peri symptoms had been sufficient enough to make me think I was safe. My youngest boys are in reception, I was starting to get my life back.

My mum is 17 years younger than her sibling, her mum having had her at 49. It’s more common than you would think.

HarshbutTrue2 · 17/02/2026 17:34

Best wishes. Hope all goes well.
A little bit of grim consolation, a friend of mine became pregnant aged about 48. She had a grown up family but was prepared to keep the baby. She miscarried soon after. There's a high chance that you would have lost the baby anyway.

I had a shock pregnancy at 45 ( peri and periods already all over the place) turned out to be a complete molar ( so egg had no maternal material in it but sperm tried to fertilise it anyway) Had to have a d&c to prevent risk of cancer. I think there's an increased risk of molar pregnancies with age ( I had never heard of them before). Had no sign it was a molar till early scan. So yes agree there's a high chance that it wouldn't lead to full term anyway. Sending you hugs x

metalbottle · 17/02/2026 17:59

Good luck with it all and well done for making the sensible decision @chillidoritto

Sophue · 17/02/2026 18:22

Just want to say what a lovely supportive thread this has been and to wish you well.

Pennyplant19 · 17/02/2026 18:23

Bless your heart. Thinking of you whatever you choose. Ignore the preachy comments and do what’s right for you and your family. Sending hugs x

GhettoSnoopystar · 17/02/2026 18:38

Just here to say I’m sorry you’re going through this, OP.

BarryManilowsWardrobe · 17/02/2026 18:49

@Elleoeez good job it’s got absolutely fuck all to do with you what other women do with their bodies then. Don’t like abortion, don’t have one. How dare you judge women for accessing legal healthcare.

Sgreenpy · 17/02/2026 18:50

Figgygal · 17/02/2026 15:23

I am absolutely heeding your warning op
Been a bit more casual recently at 45 around contraception and needed a shake up
It's right thing for you and your family take comfort in that

A friend of mine got pregnant age 45, my cousin at 43. Their children are 7 and 15 respectively.
Don't take risks - or encourage your OH to have the snip.

I was replying to Figgygal - not the OP, about taking risks!
I understand what has transpired with the OP.

And that’s OK. It’s your body and your choice. I had to make the same choice last year.

Speak to your GP and go from there. BPAS are really helpful too x

This ❤️

Oh good grief, what a shock OP. Take care of yourself 💐
