This is absolutely ‘just for fun’ on a wet Sunday, so please take this in the spirit that it’s intended!

I was at an 18th birthday party a few weeks ago. I went to the buffet and there was hot and cold food (think curry and sandwiches) so I had a plate of both. A lovely young man behind me, asked where I was sitting and whether I needed help, carrying one of the plates back.

Im able bodied and 44 😆 but appreciated the sentiment

Your turn!

When I was at a 21st birthday party and one of the youngsters asked me if I had any Gaviscon.

It’s only happened once, I was in Greece and was doing a Greek dance. The organisers picked me and older lady to go in the middle of the circle and then join back in with the circle. Then two other ladies were picked and then two others and so on until it was the turn of two little girls. It was only about halfway through the dance I realised we were being picked in order of age and I was one of the first two dancers to be picked.

Waiting to pay for my eye examination last week only to be told I no longer have to pay for them 😐

Buying paracetamol in Sainsbury's on the self service tills. The cashier who looked like they were in their early 20s didn't even so much as look at me and approved it. I thought to myself, "I'm on a hiding to nothing, aren't I?" Change this to 45 not 30 and pretty much...!

I recently changed job and on my last day 4 seperate people asked me if I was retiring .
I’m 58.
I was gutted 😩

Oh yes. Even worse, a Laura Ashley dress that I had worn in my 20's was in a museum!

Everyday at the moment, my teenager thinks it’s her only purpose in life to make sure I know I’m getting “old”……I’m 36

You’re still relatively young — at that age, I was still doing all the things people typically do in their twenties.

I didn’t have children until my early forties.

Asuitablecat · 17/02/2026 11:48

Another one.

When I'm too slow at working out one of the many remotes. The disdain ds reserves for those moments is joyful.

In my defence, I don't watch a lot of telly and there are too many of them. I just don't care enough. But it does bring back those feelings I used to have when my parents couldn't do a perfectly simple thing.

Someone in my team at work has a mum that’s younger than me 🤭

I was working with a student whose older sibling asked if I was still working here! I also felt old when one from a non-farming background went to work on a dairy farm in New Zealand, and I couldn't help but think, "I taught you to milk cows!"

More recently, I felt like I hit peak adulthood by arranging for a window cleaner to come to my house.

Ooh I've never had a window cleaner, maybe I should! My 'I'm an adult moment' was ordering my first set of made to measure curtains, I felt both old and proud simultaneously.

When your primary school-aged child takes part in a class assembly about history: the 1970s.

One of the TAs and I locked eyes across the school hall ... Confused Grin

I had a similar situation. Doing a presentation to a new starter group and each presenter had to open by saying what their role was and when they joined the company. When I said I'd started in 1987, one of the grads said out loud "I wasn't even born then". I felt ancient.

A funnier incident was when my DD was in junior school and begging for her first mobile phone. I was resisting. "How old was you when you got your first mobile?" I had to admit I was 35, when mobiles became more accessible to the public. She was horrified I'd not had my own phone for my teenage years. Her mind was blown when I told her all about dial up internet, and having to use the library or a set of encyclopaedias to do homework 🤣

I applied for a job in H&M and went to the interview only to see the manager was in her mid 20s and all the candidates were just Sixth formers. I was 48 and felt so ancient and embarrassed to be even be there.
of course I did not get the job even I used to worked for for them for them for almost 16 years a decade ago.

I was inspired to see if I could find a window-cleaner that came out this far into the sticks after I nearly got soaked by one when visiting a friend... and then thought, "Gosh, that's a very Respectable Adult thing to do!" Then I got all worried thinking that I would go overboard with attempting to look like I was adulting successfully, by starting ironing or something. I do not iron!

Made to measure curtains will be going on my Respectable Adult list, as my house is in need of many sets of curtains!

@twilightcafe DGD is doing tge 1970s in history as well. HOW! She was asking ne lots of questions when she discovered I was a teenager then ( her Dad was born in 78). I felt very old.

Over Christmas I went to a small party, there was a lovely woman there with her 10 month baby who I was admiring, she then asked me if I had any grandchildren, I’m 57 and my youngest child (16) is still at school. What’s particularly tragic is I had made a big effort with my hair, make up and outfit and actually felt quite decent. I haven’t got any grandchildren.

It's possible to look great at 57 and have grandchildren!

My son’s maths teacher, speaking about when he took his GCSEs… in 2017!

Needlenardlenoo · 17/02/2026 19:05

I grew up in the 80s and retrained as a teacher about 15 years ago after a different career. I was sitting in on an A-level lesson about Thatcher when I realised it was a History lesson! I remember the teachers being so excited about her downfall during my own A-levels they were running up and down the corridor sharing the news!

Vintageblueribbon · 18/02/2026 17:58

In the town I live in now, there is a 'vintage' charity shop

Wandered in on Monday with a friend and we where both 'thats not vintage,I remember that!' at almost everything they had on display

The 90's is indeed vintage now....

Prince Charming was released in 1981, if you can believe it.......

He's 71 now!!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/03/2026 12:57

Right now - I’m in Nando’s with six 11-13 yo boys (sitting separately) for my son’s 12 th birthday.

Even the people working here clearly think I’m ancient!
