Tell me about a time when you felt old

This is absolutely ‘just for fun’ on a wet Sunday, so please take this in the spirit that it’s intended!

I was at an 18th birthday party a few weeks ago. I went to the buffet and there was hot and cold food (think curry and sandwiches) so I had a plate of both. A lovely young man behind me, asked where I was sitting and whether I needed help, carrying one of the plates back.

Im able bodied and 44 😆 but appreciated the sentiment

Your turn!

I don’t feel old, actually, but I increasingly feel that people younger than me have a very limited scope compared to me… they just have less experience, and that looks like a disadvantage.

This is very true but it’s an advantage that it impossible to use - because externally it is perceived as a drawback (eg at work)

When a couple of my younger colleagues were discussing music and had no idea who Oasis were. I felt so old!

Have they been living as hermits over the last 12 months?!

Honestly, my husband told someone he’d seen them 6 times and they replied that they hadn’t realised they’d done that many past gigs!

A young colleagues shock when she realised there had been no mobile phones/ Internet when I was young!
She couldn't understand how we learned/ revised or kept in touch with friends. She was shocked to learn that I had to walk to friends houses and knock the door to speak to them

It was before their comeback tour, a few years ago. But i kind of thought of it as similar to not knowing who the Beatles were, or Elvis, when i was growing up.

Or when meeting up, you made plans and needed to stick to them! No texting that you’re running late, or venue change!

When my kid did a family project at school, and wrote “my parents were born in the 1900s”

Just now, when I realise that to me the 1900s means the years 1901-09!

Senior railcard gives you a third off rail travel. The lovely man at our local station always says I look too young to have one ! It’s a bit of old flannel but so what. I’m 64.

sydsmum · 15/02/2026 13:43

Last week. Out with a friend for coffee and cake. Given the "seniors special" menu by the waitress. I'm 58.

BlueOrangeRed · 15/02/2026 13:44

Talking to younger colleagues at work and mentioning the ‘great storm of 1987’. As I said it I realised most of them weren’t born until a decade after it.

I felt like some aged crone talking about my memories of the Blitz. I’m only in my mid forties!

RampantIvy · 15/02/2026 13:46

When I offered to show the ticket inspector my senior railcard, and he said "No, you're OK" 😁

This now happens to me with ID in bars 😆

At a Christmas get-together, with my 28, 26 and 23 year olds and their peers...my 28 year old was talking to her 28 year old friend, saying how old she felt, compared to some of her 20 year old colleagues....

Explaining a fax machine to one of our apprentices. Their mind was utterly boggled that we didn’t just email stuff.

My mind was boggled recently when I found out that some organisations that I work with still use fax machines!

Astrabees · 15/02/2026 13:54

We did an FTP (?) in my spin class on Saturday to help set up the new bikes. My score was the second lowest in the group and I explained to the instructor that I have an arthritic knee and have not been doing the class for long. She said that it was great that I was going at all given my age. I felt very sad and upset and although I’m 69 just ancient.

ReignOfError · 15/02/2026 13:54

Ducked into a cafe on a chilly day, and the young waitress grabbed my hands and rubbed them between hers to warm them, because, she explained, she knew how her grandmother felt the cold.

I was all of 50.

ScullyD · 15/02/2026 13:59

I’m doing a degree as a mature student and a classmate said ‘ten years ago when I was in primary school’

BlackCat14 · 15/02/2026 14:01

I’m 36 and my partner is ten years younger. One of his friends once said to me “you do like a trainer sock don’t you?” Made me feel like such a millennial🤣

Verytall · 15/02/2026 14:01

A teenager was explaining to me some drama that included online bullying. They mentioned it was tiktok, and said 'i know you won't know how tiktok works, so you know how on Facebook they have messenger...' and then proceeded to explain according to the format they presumed was for old people

There's been a few times when I've been to see new young/local bands and people have assumed I'm the parent of someone in the band.

Ferrfoxache · 15/02/2026 14:01

When i realised i can't get my sock on my left foot without the feeling that my hip is going to break.
When i walked by a building site and instead of getting wolf whistled, the worker shouted " Sorry about the mess missus !! Do you need a hand down the steps?" ( I was 47, now 57)

When it turned out a colleague had been born the year I graduated.

I had a previous job where some very keen new recruit was telling me how to do something and I thought, "I've been doing this longer than you've been alive."

The first time someone offered me a seat on the Tube was a bit of a surprise...

66babe · 15/02/2026 14:09

I recently changed job and on my last day 4 seperate people asked me if I was retiring .
I’m 58.
I was gutted 😩

ThatNattyPlayer · 15/02/2026 14:10

Everyday at the moment, my teenager thinks it’s her only purpose in life to make sure I know I’m getting “old”……I’m 36

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 15/02/2026 14:12

I joined a small group fitness class. Was paired with a lovely 17 year old for paired activities. She was amazing at pull ups. First time she did one I said "wow youre amazing they should call you lara croft". She said... "who?" Then one by one all of the group except one other bloke engaged in a conversation about how they had never heard of Lara Croft!. #shamed.
