Did I say Farage would?

No I didn’t. But I stand by my point that over saturating the markets will keep wages suppressed.

And reducing the market doesn't mean they will increase.
There are many things a far right government can do to increase labour without the need for the wealthy to pay more for it.
Remove welfare support so even the old, disabled and ill will have to drag thenselves into some sort of work if they want to eat.
Remove employment rights so that those in jobs can be forced to work harder in poorer conditions and for less if they want to keep them.
Remove support for training and anything beyond a basic education for those who can't afford to pay for it, so the WC start grafting at 16.
I'm sure there's more.

Sure but the issue is you can arrest people but the demand exists for someone else to step in easily once they’re gone. There’s been headlines on supposed ‘game changing’ impact but it’s up on last year.

There’s no shortage of people ready to earn a huge amount of money from moving people.

fiorentina · 15/02/2026 18:49

Having worked for a company Rupert Lowe also worked for, he is an awful, repulsive man. He and Farage are as bad as one another.

As someone rightly pointed out above, keeping immigration low to give workers more rights and negotiating power used to be a left leaning principle. Sadly it’s been lost and replaced with never ending supply of low income workers meaning any current worker has very little rights anyway.

At the minute you’re just speculating on what could happen as from what I’ve seen, Reform have barely any policies except those written on a fag paper and keep flip flopping on the populist opinion of the day. Labour very nearly reduced the welfare budget and ended up with an Internal dispute as they can’t balance the books either.

Currently the Greens seem to be topping the polls so I’d be more concerned about their policies which again, seem to actually be very few. I’m very depressed at all of the offerings available to us to be fair.

Edit: I also wouldn’t call Reform far right considering they’re mostly tories. That phrase gets brandished far too liberally.

But surely the point is that the more people who get arrested and stopped, the less likely it is that others are going to take the risk. What else do you think should happen if not make an example of people?

It’s clearly a very complex issue. The full range of laws haven’t come in yet, they’re being staggered.

Economically right wing employers are unlikely to want old and sick people working for them, less efficient.

Depends what rights, angela rayners madcap ideas are going to reduce hiring as employers are less likely to give someone a chance if the consequences of having ti dismiss someone is high.

People are already working harder for less because their housing and bills are expensive and there is more competition in the market.

what support for extra education, you are supposed to be in school til 18 yet our NEET numbers are increasing because the cost of employment is going up. AI is going to make it worse.

Because the money is excellent and people get better at avoiding arrest. Up until recently people were even open about it, that BBC podcast with the man saying he ran the network.

It’s pretty much trying to clear up every person ready to earn millions from moving people, it’s probably even harder than drugs to stop because the people arriving are ok to do so.

And I cannot stress enough, there’s major money being made here from boat arrivals by companies too.

If people researched some of the companies providing the support, it’s in the billions (Serco and Clear Springs being an examples).

It wouldn’t shock me if current govt officials are shareholders or profiting in some way. Always seems to be the way unfortunately.

The Putin strategy is real but there are 2 parts to it
The first is to encourage/facilitate migration where possible.
The second is to seed as much anti-immigration messaging into the discourse as possible. That's how the destabilisation works. It's not that the plan is the immigrants will be doing the destabilising themselves. It's public upset that brings down/weakens governments.

Putin's definitely been doing both those things to countries bordering Belarus and Finland. It's been documented. They have also been taking advantage of ongoing migration movements (eg Ukrainian refugees in Poland) to spread anti migrant rhetoric. He can also ride on the back of existing migration causes (migration from Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Iraq). He doesn't even need to encourage migration from there it's already happening. They just need to fan the flames on anti migrant discourse (the second step)
So "Putin wants to encourage migration" misses out the most major part of that strategy. That's not to say that all angry discourse on the levels of migration is really the doing of Putin. That would be ridiculous (and ignore real concerns). It's more that the Russians try to amplify and direct existing tensions than create tensions from nothing.

What's weirder than Russia (an adversary) pulling those sort of tricks is when it's a supposed ally like the US. Who (with the UK coming along for the ride) was responsible for much of the destabilisation of the ME which caused migration into Europe in the first place. Which they are now shouting about. Ho hum.

Lots of big companies have made money from immigration. Including vast profits housing refugees. I would love for that to be looked at, but it gets swallowed up in the "immigrants on 3 square meals a day in 5.star hotels" narratives which ignore the fact companies are charging vast amounts for very poor accommodation and creaming of the profits.

Labour’s barracks are costing more than the hotels they replace.

PickAChew · 15/02/2026 19:55

I am enjoying watching posters trying to frame a very wealthy man called Rupert, who went to boarding school, as a man who understands "working class people", while denigrating anyone who dislikes him as "university educated". I mean Rupert is also university educated but I suppose that doesn't count.

I’m in 100% agreement with you. It benefits the billionaires and far right if immigration continues because it works to destabilise Europe and provide a scapegoat so that disaster capitalists can keep getting richer.

I reckon if the boats stop if reform gain power it will be because his backers have stopped them coming because the tool is no longer of as much use, then they can claim victory. They will then start the full throttle demonisation of those who are here legally or other minorities. They won’t need the money from the asylum system anymore, they can get it elsewhere.

It seems so obvious to me and has been for a while what the game is.

The abolition of the ECHR and workers rights just allows explotion of citizens.

cardibach · 15/02/2026 20:01

TwelvePiecesOfFlair · 15/02/2026 13:20

Im no fan of Reform and agree that their main focus is on making the rich richer but I am also a bit sick of people on the progressive establishment side parroting things like this, or saying “ white Brits abuse girls too”. The grooming/ rape gangs involve mainly the systematic, organised abuse of children over the span of decades, aided and abetted by useful idiots in social services and police and are overwhelmingly made up of networks of men of Pakistani heritage.
The victims have been let down by the authorities time and again, which is why people like Lowe can use the righteous anger of ordinary people to further his own ends.
Also, I don’t think most people are only concerned with illegal immigration. After Brexit (caused by Farage) the government allowed record numbers of immigrants in through legal channels and this has caused problems for many communities across the uk. Again, the main parties pretending this isn’t a problem opens the door for extremists.

I think Epstein destroys any argument that systemic abuse is an ethnic issue.

Maybe so, but it’s supposed to get people out of hotels like people have been demanding.

‘’Put them in army barracks!’’ The minute they do they’re not happy about that either. It does seem as though the government can’t do right for doing wrong.

You can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Asylum seekers are here illegally.

It is a criminal offence to enter the UK without a visa where one is required.

It's why small boat arrival asylum seekers are arrested and questioned on entry.

Not if you claim asylum it’s not. It’s the on,y way for most to claim asylum.

After seeing how Rupert Lowe ran the football club I support, the thought of him having any kind of power is just horrifying.

Can you shine any light on this? I'd never heard of him in the football ownership era? TIA.

I’m pretty sure people didn’t mean put them in barracks instead, is that what you think they were asking for? Where was that in the Labour campaign?

If that’s what Labour are relying on then no wonder they’re losing so many votes.

Teanbiscuits33 · 15/02/2026 20:12

Oh they did, I’ve had conversations with people who have suggested disused barracks, and people screaming about it online. As long as it’s NIMBY, eh? 🤣
