TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Pubs are for drinking not eating breakfast. There are cafes for that.

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 16:10

Our Spoons is one of the only places open every day to have meals. Also the pubs in town are pretty much the only places open in the evening if you want a meal especially on certain days of the week

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 14:41

Of course it is. If you start on a morning when will you stop, passed out at 3pm?

Drinking is usually an evening thing, afternoon for occasions but not regularly. These aren't my rules btw it's actually common sense. Lots of info available if you Google about safe drinking habits I'd bet a tenner 8.30am is not listed.

People can have a drink you don't need to drink until you're pissed

FreeFromWhat · 14/02/2026 16:31

And pubs are for drinking in not sleeping. There are hotels for that.

And yet there are literally thousands of pubs who do bed and breakfast.
Funny that.

Drinking in a pub? What next reading in bookshop? Where will it end?

Spot the person banging on the door at 8.30am desperate for their first pint 😂

Anonanonanonagain · 14/02/2026 16:37

Drinking in weatherspoons is akin to being in an airport at 6am and drinking. Does not matter the reason they are in the place but they are drinking, quite simply, because they can.

We no longer have any pubs.

I must be living in a fantasy town there, as we have multiple pubs within walking distance of our house 🤔

I have done this twice but years apart and for the same reason. I was supposed to be on a sleep over at work, meaning you would only get up if the wake night catch person needed support and then you would ho back to sleep once resolved.
I started my shift at 11:30hrs, as usual and should have been on sleep iver from 23:00hrs. However it was the night from hell, with no chance of going to bed. Staff were being attacked by a child, windows were smashed, building trashed. Manager came in at 06:00hrs and once paperworkwas done told us go home.
My colleague just said ' come on, lets have a swifty at Spoons to decompress!'
it helped!

We wouldn't we judge alkies? Nothing to do with the grace of God. Drinking at 8.30am is never a good thing. Post night shift, holibobs whatever. If they drink at that time they have a drink problem.

Well of course it makes a difference if someone works a night shift 🙄 The time to worry when someone works nights is when they have a drink with their partner/mates before they go on shift. Unwinding with a drink with their workmates when they finish work is no more of an issue if they finish at 8 am than if they finish at 8 pm . Think about it.

Blimey the judgement. I often work night shifts with colleagues and after a hard, fast paced, stressful night we go for something to eat and a drink then back to the hotel to sleep and go back to work. Very much not alcoholics and no different to going for dinner and having a few drinks after work. Sometimes just one person fancies if we are tired and might go alone.
Don’t blanket assume everyone is an alcoholic. Not everyone is on a 9-5!

Edited

Really? I know people in the emergency services and after a 'hard, fast paced stressful night' no one goes to the pub. They go home to bed. Well, apart form those with alcohol problems of course but nope, I've never experienced partying at 8am post night shift.

You either don't know alit of people or they just aren't telling you because they can see how judgemental you are.

Please explain to me how a pint at 8am is worse for me than a pint at 8.30pm?

You're very hyperbolic, aren't you?

AgnesMcDoo · 14/02/2026 17:07

Crikey - I didn’t know you could drink at that time in the morning in England.

in Scotland you can’t get a pint before 10am. (Airports being the exception)

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 14:30

Can you really say it's normal to drink alcohol in the morning unless you are on a once in a while party celebration such as hens, birthday, or wedding etc?

Do you honestly know anyone who's cracking open the fizz in the morning as a habit.

Why are you so bothered and so judgemental about this?

FYI in some countries it’s culturally acceptable and quite normal to have alcohol in the mornings (Spain for example). Doesn’t make everybody who does it an alcoholic.

Personally, I find it more strange you would choose to go to Spoons, of all places, for your breakfast. I thought the ONLY point of that place was cheap booze?

But I doubt I’d make an outraged thread about it, because live and let live.

Tbh I think going to Spoons for breakfast is weird, unless you’re very young. 🤷‍♀️

You’ve not seen all the retired folk in there then ? 🤣

'Generally morning pub drinkers are people coming off night shifts. So 8am is their is their Friday night..'

This repeated story about night shift workers is just not true. I worked shifts years ago for a massive organisation and believe me after a night shift everyone wanted to get home to bed. There was no pints at 8am, well maybe for those with drink problems but for the most part no. 8am was not party time.

Perhaps your colleagues just didn’t fancy a drink with you !

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 11:31

At 8.30am?!

I'm surprised we don't have laws banning the sale of booze at that time. Alkies will drink wherever but providing a venue for them likes this enables the 'social drinking' excuse.

If you are truly an alcoholic and are only in spoons for the alcohol wouldn’t you just stock up on cheap booze from the supermarket and drink at home. While it’s inexpensive it still costs more than the supermarket. It’s companionship as much as anything else. With fellow workers after night shift, friends for a fun outing, quick filling cheap breakfast, insomniacs or just a bit of company. Even a way to limit how much you drink. Stop judging.

So what? life expectancy years ago was age 40. Not sure what point it is you're making

So many people quote that stat without realising it was massively skewed by the huge child mortality at the time. If you survived childhood, and childbirth as a woman then you had a pretty good chance of reaching old age.

Spoons does a surprisingly good breakfast - it's cheap, hot, filling and you know exactly what you're getting for your money. I love their breakfast wraps.

okay fair, I didn’t know that (I don’t go to Spoons!)
