I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Took kids in for breakfast whilst waiting on an appointment and omg I won’t be back, full of folk half micked at 9.40am and all on their phones watching stuff on loudspeaker. I mean like 15 tables all sitting with phones on Noise was insane. Wont be back.

That must have been terrible, imagine the odds of that happening.

must have been an unusually small Wetherspoons if it was full with only 15 tables occupied and nowhere to sit further away from them.

That's surprising to me. We go in regularly for a bacon roll and coffee anytime between 9 and 11 and I've never seen that scenario. Ever. Mostly older couples, one or two blokes or women on their own, eating breakfast. Maybe the odd bloke with a pint and a newspaper. For the size of most of their establishments (pretty big) it's usually just a low buzz of human conversation with the staff rattling back and forth serving breakfast.

Was it a match day close to a football stadium? That's the only time I can imagine seeing it 'full' of drunk blokes in the morning.

HelenaWilson · 17/02/2026 14:22

The Spoons at main railway termini are busy at any time. Was in one in London, one morning recently. Didn't notice what people were eating or drinking, though. (I had coffee and small brek.)

That breakfast looks good. Not too oily like some can be, and real mushrooms and tomatoes not tinned and heated.

I've not tried their vegetarian sausages before but their meat ones are quite okay.

Yes, the breakfasts are as good as some I've paid twice the price for & only get 1 cup of tea! People actually need to try it before they knock it

I agree. It took me years to persuade dh into a Wetherspoons, he was convinced it would be sticky carpets and smelling of old smoke with a load of hooligans
propping up the bar.

Now you can't keep him out of there if we need refreshment whatever town or city we're in. A lot are in the most beautiful old buildings and the staff are so efficient and friendly. The clientele are a mixture from all walks of life.

And the icing on the cake is there won't be a dog in sight. That's a massive bonus.

If friends and I are visiting somewhere new, we make a point of checking out the Wetherspoons. Did you know that each one has a different, specially designed carpet? And as pp said, the boards with information about the building and local area are interesting.

Some people make a hobby of visiting as many as possible, like some people try to visit every football league ground.

I didn't know that and I'm so glad you told me:) I had remarked to myself on some of the unusual carpets I've seen, most recently in Truro, very noticeable with its squiggly lines and quite colourful. Just never thought too deeply about it.
Interesting to know that it's a 'thing'

Well I think that's going to be me in future, I do have a good head start as we have cause to travel quite a bit for one reason and another. I just need to remember first where we've been! And as far as hobbies go it's going to be cheap. "Drinkers in Spoons". The thread that's changed my life! 😉

There's some lovely buildings for sure. I'm one of those trying to get round them all 😁
Just because. Why not? Bit of fun and gets you visiting counties/ towns you never would have otherwise!
The Winter Gardens in Harrogate, North Yorkshire has a lovely sweeping staircase as you enter.
There's one with a musical organ up near the rafters as well but I forget which one that is now.
Also was a lovely building.

Seagullstopitnow · 18/02/2026 07:42

I see the fun police found the thread 😆

I have had pints with breakfast when meeting people for a coach trip to a rugby away day.

I average 1-2 units A WEEK most weeks are zero units.

According to some people on here I'm on a slippery slope to necking white lightning on a park bench and urinating on passers by.
I look forward to embracing my descent into hopelessness 🙂

Toastersandkettles · 18/02/2026 07:50

DSIS used to work 10pm-8am. She'd often go for a drink with her workmates in the morning. They should be allowed a post work drink just like anyone else.

NotAnotherScarf · 18/02/2026 07:55

I love some of the snob values around spoons. My sil was very much like that because she married someone she thought was rich and his family owned a mansion (which rotted away and was demolished). Thing is the rest of the family love spoons so if she wants to see her mother, my wife and her brother at the same time she's got no choice.

Spoons pros:
Cheap beer.
Free refill for tea coffee.
Great staff who are well looked after.
Consistent food; 5 star hygiene rating across the over 800 pubs.
Supporting local small breweries.
Does scrumpy cider in my local.

Cons
Not enough of them.
Cant get a beer until 9am in my local.

Yes! I've ticked this off the list already! Came across it last year unplanned while visiting relatives. It's very impressive and well worth a visit. Some of these buildings are amazing.

HelenaWilson · 18/02/2026 10:06

Spoons pros:....

And ladies' loos generally clean, spacious and everything working, not as in many places 2-3 cubicles in a cramped space, one with a broken lock or no loo paper.

And the historic buildings.

And they're in town centre locations, so easy to get to and get home/back to where you're staying. (I've never tried their hotels.)

Just to clarify - Is that wrong ? (asking for a friend)

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/02/2026 10:34

I love a pp’s imaginative attempt to cast Spoons drinkers as flag shaggers and shouty Reform types. I doubt the old blokes supping Ruddles in the morning give a shit about politics or protest. They just want a pint and a chat.

Unique carpets? Okay, now I'm intrigued. I've never noticed any information boards about the history of the buildings, either.

I accept this mission to carefully compare and contrast all JDWetherspoon carpets within a 10 mile radius!

If you look on the front of the menus there's usually some blurb telling you about the history of the building/who/what it's named after etc.

Not every Wetherspoons has a unique carpet although many do. There's actually a book about some of the different carpet designs. However, I've been in several Wetherspoons and have never seen one without local history and information on the walls.
