TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Perhaps your colleagues just didn’t fancy a drink with you !

But yet we all used to go on nights out when we were off so your theory is incorrect hun.

I'm surprised by the constant minimising of 8.30am drinking. It isn't good for you, it isn't ok and pubs should serve breakfast at that time not booze. No wonder we have a nation of pissheads.

Because having a drink in the morning is still better for you then going out for a skinfull in the evening. Surely you can see that

It seems ok to go for lunch or dinner. I just find it a strange idea to go to a pub for breakfast. I appreciate that that’s just me though, and acknowledge the inconsistency.

Yes, you said you’d never been into a Spoons. Perhaps it’s time to get yourself down there in the morning and see what you are missing out on! Alcohol absolutely not compulsory - and I find the refillable coffee at £1.69 to be very drinkable.

How is it not good for you... in comparison to evening drinking?

Youve been asked repeatedly and avoid the question but keep banging on about how it's not good.

Is it all ‘full English’-type food?

No. Quite a variety. Breakfast rolls, fruit and yogurt, porridge, vegan breakfast, scrambled eggs on toast.

Drinking at 8am is no worse for you than drinking at 8pm Hmm

I think what the pp means is that it’s morally bad to drink in the day. You find that a lot with people who have hang ups about drinking. They have this weird quasi-religious attitude that ‘dirty’ things should only be done after dark.

Whiskeyandkittens · 14/02/2026 18:50

I worked at a Wetherspoons in the early 00's when I was at college - during that time they changed the opening time from 11am to 10am so people could come in earlier for breakfast although we couldn't serve alcohol until 11.
All that happened was that the same group of older men would come in an hour earlier than they used to and just sit at the bar, watching the clock, and not order anything until they could get their regular pints dead on 11am!

It's such a bizarre attitude - and I say that as someone who doesn't even drink!

Connachtfive · 14/02/2026 18:53

Night shift workers social life! Back in the day after seven 12 hour shifts the team would head straight out to the pub to celebrate 🥳

I understand that.. but this specific poster has actually said its unhealthy so I'm wondering why they would assume it's any unhealthier than other drinking times.

Sure, but I think she’s really using ‘health’ as a substitute for moral health, for spiritual virtue.

All the ex-Spoons workers who’ve said who the day drinkers are have said they’re old men, unsurprisingly. There’s no plausible health concern for old men who just want to drink beer and be around people. The former workers have also said that the old men do not get drunk and do not cause trouble.

So the objection must be something else.

notacooldad · 14/02/2026 19:41

Personally, I find it more strange you would choose to go to Spoons, of all places, for your breakfast. I thought the ONLY point of that place was cheap booze?
Theres a spoons near one of the buildings used for staff training. Often its busy with our staff having breakfast before a course. Ive done it a few times wkth a colleague( obviously with no alcohol)

Tarkan · 14/02/2026 20:16

AgnesMcDoo · 14/02/2026 17:07

Crikey - I didn’t know you could drink at that time in the morning in England.

in Scotland you can’t get a pint before 10am. (Airports being the exception)

Depends where you are actually. My town it’s 11am in Spoons but we’ve been elsewhere in Scotland and it was 9am which felt really weird with what we’re used to.

HelenaWilson · 14/02/2026 21:22

Pubs around Smithfield, Covent Garden and Fleet Street used to have special opening hours to take account of the different working hours there. Probably staff from Bart's Hospital used the Smithfield pubs after a night shift too.

I like a Spoons breakfast. Will keep you going all day. Their scampi and chips is always good too.

And many of their pubs are in historic buildings which are worth visiting. And their Ladies' loos are generally better than many supposedly more upmarket places.

NotnowMildrid · 14/02/2026 21:43

Yes totally agree, I was away recently and also went there for breakfast a couple of times.

Quite an eye opener for me seeing lot’s of men (and a few women) having pints, at that time of the morning.

Jaxinabox · 14/02/2026 23:41

Gloriia · 14/02/2026 16:51

Really? I know people in the emergency services and after a 'hard, fast paced stressful night' no one goes to the pub. They go home to bed. Well, apart form those with alcohol problems of course but nope, I've never experienced partying at 8am post night shift.

Well it shows you don’t know everyone then doesn’t it 😂

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/02/2026 09:53

Mr Monkey worked the London 2012 Olympics and it was 24/7 shifts. The night crew would absolutely knock off at 6am and get a pint in the all night Casino in Westfield.

SugarPuffSandwiches · 15/02/2026 10:05

titchy · 14/02/2026 11:44

Tbh I think going to Spoons for breakfast is weird, unless you’re very young. 🤷‍♀️

Why? They do great breakfasts, which are brilliant value.
Where else can you get a veggie breakfast of two sausages, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, beans and toast with spread for £2.99?
As another poster mentioned they're also great with allergies - you know what you're getting whichever Spoons you go to, and they have an allergy information list of each dish on the menu if you look in the app.

KeepOffTheQuinoa · 15/02/2026 10:14

I have been in our Spoons at breakfast time, we get together as a community to cheer events that happen on our main road (quite a few, it’s a sort of classic route), and are often in the pub for a 9am breakfast.

Along with families at the weekends: it’s a popular and affordable meal out.
On weekdays : the crews who have done overnight work on the roads, utilities etc. Some having a meal and one pint, not ‘partying’.
Anytime: older single men who can’t kick the habit of getting up early and can’t be bothered to assemble and cook all the elements of a full English. And might have a pint ‘because they can’. My neighbour is in this group. A retired widowed postie , he is at the gym by 6 or 6.30 and in Spoons by 8 for breakfast with a group of friends, who might then stay reading their papers or watching sport depending on what is on. Saves heating at home. Also my neighbour saves on broadband, just uses WiFi at the Spoons.
They drink Ruddles which is a weak ale and costs £1.99 a pint. They make it last.

So a mimosa in a five star hotel is the same?

Spoons does a surprisingly good breakfast - it's cheap, hot, filling and you know exactly what you're getting for your money. I love their breakfast wraps.

Pubs are for drinking. Now they’ve all been turned into glorified cafes. Kids. Prams. People eating cod. That’s been the downturn. You used to drink and smoke without some wally wafting their hand under their nose Bring back real pubs.

Notmymarmosets · 15/02/2026 10:23

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 14/02/2026 17:54

You’ve not seen all the retired folk in there then ? 🤣

We have a lovely Spoons. Several book clubs and mum's groups and U3A groups meet there because of the cheap breakfasts £3.09 and all you can drink coffees £1.85

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/02/2026 10:30

Ha ha. "People eating cod has ruined pubs" is a take I wasn't expecting to see today.

Lots of "beer only" pubs around here.
