Drinkers in Spoons

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:40

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

@StripeHot they do a variety. I like their Eggs Benedict

Maybe it’s the ‘pub smell’ that might put me off first thing? Or the idea that I am in a pub at 8am. Who knows, I know I am speaking from a position of ignorance on the topic!

StripeHot · 14/02/2026 14:07

Is it all ‘full English’-type food?

They do all sorts - fry ups, vegetarian breakfasts, porridge, fruit, toast (with various toppings), various types of eggs benedict, breakfast wraps and buttys, breakfast muffins etc.

It's good, cheap, hot and filling.

Why would you go to a pub by yourself at 8am. Alcohol is expensive and the effort of going outside lol

If you are drinking at that time in the morning the chances are you are alcohol dependent. Booze is cheapish in Spoons, it will be relatively warm and your fellow dependent drinkers will probably be there making you less alone. You will get a bit of social interaction from the bar staff who more than likely will know your name and your drink of choice.

What planet are you on where dog ownership is cheaper than the odd pint on a Saturday morning? 😂

Tbf in a pub near us many of these early morning drinkers have their poor dogs sat beside them so yes walking them would get this 'human contact' and be healthier than drinking at 8.30 and cheaper! Most people with drink issues don't of course want solutions.

99pwithaflake · 14/02/2026 14:03

Yep, just as cocktails with "bottomless brunches" or Bucks Fizz at 6am on Christmas Day are acceptable.

MN is hypocrisy at its' finest.

I've rtft and can't see anyone saying drinking champagne at 8am or even 6am is acceptable but drinking beer at that time is not.

I think most agree that drinking alcohol in a morning is bad for one's health.

Can you really say it's normal to drink alcohol in the morning unless you are on a once in a while party celebration such as hens, birthday, or wedding etc?

Do you honestly know anyone who's cracking open the fizz in the morning as a habit.

What is your point though? You started this whole thread, why? You already know it’s not normal to drink regularly in the morning - so what was the point of tinkly laugh pretending that you didn’t get it? Did you just want people to laugh at the drinkers in the pub this morning?

It's no worse for your health than drinking at any other time of the day.

It's a chat forum though, the op observed something and canvassed opinions. It's what happens on a site like this.

The amount of enabling and excusing demonstrates why so many people have alcohol problems.

Of course it is. If you start on a morning when will you stop, passed out at 3pm?

Drinking is usually an evening thing, afternoon for occasions but not regularly. These aren't my rules btw it's actually common sense. Lots of info available if you Google about safe drinking habits I'd bet a tenner 8.30am is not listed.

Why can't people just have one drink and stop?

Bit of a weird assumption that someone having a drink means they'll be pissed and passed out 7 hours later.

Yes she saw people drinking alcohol and asked if it was weird. Yes it is imo. 68% agree.

Drinking too much alcohol is bad, the time of day is irrelevant.

There is quite a shift now to going out during the day and being home early.
i was out with friends last weekend for an engagement celebration that started at 2pm, a few went out after the meal but most of us headed back to the station around 6 which is pretty usual for us.
we don’t drink to pass out point now we’re not in our 20’s!
my DSD 18 is obviously at the other end and will pre drink whilst getting ready with friends and go out about 9pm until 3/4am

Maybe they started their walk at 6am and fancy a sit down and a snifter!

@Sugarfish ahh fond memories of Eurostar Leisure Select where you got a little tumbler of champgne with your breakfast on board!

Yes, a full English plus unlimited refill tea/coffee for about £5.

Spoons plays an important part in many people's lives. It's one of the few pubs where women can go without being judged (I know that's very old fashioned but I know lots of more mature women who have sad that to me). It's a forgiving place to take young children to teach them about eating out. It's a place that's happy for you to sit with a cup of £1.81 coffee (including unlimited refills) for hours.

Yes I've had a pint at 9 in the morning many times....the time you are allowed alcohol varies from licensing area to area. I've also eaten there many times... cheap, consistent and you know exactly what you are going to get...the Christmas dinner for £15 is fantastic btw.

But I wonder what MN thinks about my drinking habits. I go out at 5pm on a Wednesday, meet some mates and I'm home for 7-7.30....or I might go Friday afternoon 2 to 4

On a Saturday my wife and I walk the 2 miles to spoons for a couple of pints...

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 14/02/2026 15:48

Wetherspoons pizzas and fish and chips are surprisingly good for the price. I go in after work quite often because it's quick and cheap.

Yes I second the pizzas. I’ve also had a good ham and cheese panini.

MantleStatue · 14/02/2026 15:54

They also do a roast chicken with trimmings that I rate quite highly.

Their Sauvignon Blanc last time I went was Marlborough. My local indy pub has a large Marlborough for £9.75. Spoons Marlborough is around £6

sittingonabeach · 14/02/2026 15:57

We are lucky that our local Spoons is not the sticky carpet type.

Went to one near DS’s university, very much a different vibe and quite sticky!

Jaxinabox · 14/02/2026 16:04

Blimey the judgement. I often work night shifts with colleagues and after a hard, fast paced, stressful night we go for something to eat and a drink then back to the hotel to sleep and go back to work. Very much not alcoholics and no different to going for dinner and having a few drinks after work. Sometimes just one person fancies if we are tired and might go alone.
Don’t blanket assume everyone is an alcoholic. Not everyone is on a 9-5!
