My antenatal class had a woman who occasionally mentioned professional sport. When probed it turned out she was a GB skeleton Olympic medal winner two years prior.

She seemed quite normal!

She is 😂😂

Yetanothernewname1 · 13/02/2026 22:34

Mmmm @Applecharlotte2. I purposely didn’t say who but not sure which skeleton gb medal holders have kids!

I reckon they have to fiddle the sound because the competitors are going 'weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' all the way down.

In fact they get extra points for doing that in one breath.

Fact.

I had to turn the sound down for the curling as couldn't stand all the shouting and screaming. But when the skeleton came on I commented to DH that there's someone who could be forgiven for yelling at the top of their voice...😁

Flukingflukes · 13/02/2026 23:00

Yes the skeleton is the maddest sport you’ll ever see. I’m sure there’s a lot to it but lying face down, going head first at 80 miles an hour, seems unlike any other sport.

Alpacajigsaw · 13/02/2026 23:07

Poor Malinin, what a shame. He must be absolutely devastated. I’m sure he’ll learn and come back stronger.

Happyjoe · 13/02/2026 23:07

murasaki · 13/02/2026 22:22

If you mean the figure skating, they showed it! It ended a bit ago.

Thanks, yeah, realised my mistake, I'd paused it earlier to do chores. I am an idiot! Managed to track it down on BBC2. What a shocking ending!

Totally, wasn't expecting that to happen at all.

Luge - where they go down feet first - is actually even more dangerous. It’s faster than skeleton, and by design the sleds are more unstable, allowing for greater flexibility in steering, but much lower tolerance for mistakes.

In the 2010 Olympics, an athlete crashed and died in his final luge training run.

MouldyCandy · 13/02/2026 23:26

Is there anywhere we can see the winning routine?
BBC live coverage was of the 🏅 ceremony so I missed it.

Agree with Robin that Zuma from Japan just needs to skate to his own style/strengths. He was amazing in the Team event and if he had executed triple spins flawlessly rather than falling on a quad, he would have won.

It's certainly a bit hairy at times. I think the snowboarding race thingy was described as madcap antics or something like that. You're almost waiting for something awful to happen! What I like is the general camaraderie, sportsmanship/womanship...they seem to be happy for one another.
Don't the Aussies joke that the Brits are only good at sports where you can sit or lie down, ha ha. Suicidal tea trays are a doddle.

They used to say we were only good at bikes or boats have to add tea trays to that now!

I don’t think the young chap who won gold was expecting it either!!! He looked absolutely stunned. Well you wouldn’t against Malinin would you? Just shows nothing is ever certain in sport. I’m just sad we didn’t see his winning routine live as they switched over to the skating just after he’d finished. Bet the directors in the tv box weren’t expecting 5th place to end up Champion! Robin Cousins did say he skated beautifully didn’t he.

Im amazed I havent seen it before, I love the winter olympics.

I think Ive seen it the other way up.

I am now enjoying the idea of a race to climb up the sliding track while carrying a tea tray.

Sitting down and lying down sports!

Flukingflukes · 14/02/2026 01:38

I love the figure skating and the ice dance. They haven’t shown much of it and if I try and watch it on iplayer it crashes.

BurntBroccoli · 14/02/2026 01:52

Yes it looks so frightening and the speech is around 78 mph with their face a couple of cm off the floor.

I was watching the women the other night, they lie on their backs feet first!

Also has anyone been watching the snow boarding? Big air and half pipe? I half shut my eyes at some of the tricks they do!

WarrenTofficier · 14/02/2026 02:15

@BurntBroccoli that was a different event. Skeleton is head first on their front regardless of the sex of the competitor. Feet first on their back is the luge. The final of the women's skeleton is tomorrow.

Watching his wee face at the end I came over all maternal. Poor lad.

Crwysmam · 14/02/2026 02:52

I love all the “sledging” events. I’ve always been a bit of an adrenaline junky but my job relies on me staying in one piece so I have avoided winter sports. As children we frequently sledge down very steep hills ( West Yorkshire Pennines) but I think 80mph on a tea tray would be a bit of a stretch.

As 3rd yr students in Birmingham i remember sneaking into the big halls of residence, that were located on a perfect sledging hill, and borrowing the tea trays from the canteen to sledge with. The small round ones were the best because they spun round as you travelled down the hill. They were much faster than the modern plastic sledges.

With teacups not mugs (you get extra points for them staying in the saucers)

The handicap is the custard creams.

I do think the BBC should show the full gold medal winning skating performance in a peak slot today. All I know about the chap who won is that he looks very humble with unruly hair

OhDear111 · 14/02/2026 09:09

The skating clashed with the skeleton Bob. We got gold in the skeleton so it was a priority. Hopefully skating is on player. It said on my bbc sport app that it was.

I wont hear it, these are tea trays. I love it.

I would like to see one with a nice tabby cat design.

Ooh yes, and maybe with an touch of basket weaving around the edge?
