I might take dd to the cinema to see and then to Nando’s and to a bakery for a cupcake. Will need to find a flower shop to buy her one red rose

I hate that it’s on a Saturday, I really don’t wanna see young teens out on dates while I’m chronically single 😂

will you do anything? No judgement if not, it’s just me and dd so I like to do this stuff

plus, when someone’s son decides to take her out when she’s older, she won’t be thrilled by literally the bare minimum!!

edit to see either Gaby’s dolls house, zootropolis 2 or The Goat (kids cartoon) - not sure which 🤷‍♀️

I got home from work to see some Valentines treats in the fridge. Apparently they’re for our granddaughter when we have her at the weekend 😆
She will absolutely love it and probably draw us both a card. I think it’s lovely to have celebrations, some people will say it’s weird but if that's how their mind works no point trying to convince them otherwise.

Nothing because that's weird. My ex mil used to send my then husband valentine's day cards - it's really fucking weird. And yes, she was doing it 30 years ago, so it's not new - but it's still fucking weird.

That is weird. And incredibly cringe.
But the OPs DD is a child and I think there's something innocent and lovely about what they've got planned. And it doesn't sound like she plans to still be doing it in twenty years time.

Nothing. I like them to give me something on mothering Sunday. Valentine’s Day is about romantic love. Not family love.

100%

ultracynic · 11/02/2026 21:41

My mum always got us a chocolate heart and after I left home she sent one through the post every year until I got married. Now I get my kids chocolate hearts (but prob won’t bother posting them when the time comes, as the stamps will cost more than the chocolate)

Plovx · 11/02/2026 21:41

KatyaKat · 11/02/2026 19:50

Eh? Why would you do something for your kids for Valentine's day?

I should think some older kids would appreciate a gesture if they feel crap about having no bf/gf/valentines cards etc.

some young kids will just enjoy pink or read hearts as sweets/chocs or whatever.

mine are older teens. Ds has eaten what I bought him (heart shaped box of guylian (sp?) and dd
is having a hoodie to match some bottoms she has and an iced biscuit.

neither has a bf/gf so im making it a bit less shit of a day for them

SouthLondonMum22 · 11/02/2026 21:41

They will get some little chocolates. Nothing major.

edwinbear · 11/02/2026 21:42

We don’t ‘do’ Valentines Day, but I’ll be going to have a look at the M&S Valentines meal deal thing and getting that for the 4 of us for dinner!

Pantzb · 11/02/2026 21:42

My mil has sent my two year old a card and his cousins…. And apparently always did for my OH…. I don’t get it personally which is why I have had to google it to see if I’m being weird about it.

tinyspiny · 11/02/2026 21:38

Valentine’s Day is for couples / people romantically involved not children

In your house maybe, but not ours. It's for all of us. And judging by the number of people on here who involve their children, it is normal and not weird.

DelinquentSnails · 11/02/2026 21:43

My mum’s family is from Norfolk, and so I keep the Jack Valentine tradition alive with my kids. On Valentine’s morning, there is a knock at the door and the present is left for the children from Jack Valentine. That tradition happened for me every Valentine’s Day wherever we lived in the world as a child, and my teenagers still await their Jack Valentine gift, often in France as we usually ski this week We are away with family this Valentine’s Day and so my slightly two-year-old Irish niece will also be receiving a Jack Valentine gift - Eoin Valentine I guess 🙂

Sassylovesbooks · 11/02/2026 21:43

My son is 15, he'd be mortified if I attempted to do anything for him!! I think I'd be the most embarrassing Mum ever! It's never crossed my mind to do anything special for my son on St Valentine's Day, in all honesty. For my husband and I it's a special day, as he proposed to me on St Valentine's Day in 2006.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/02/2026 21:46

I'm loving learning about Jack Valentine. Never heard of it/him before. ❤

BringBackCatsEyes · 11/02/2026 21:47

My 16 yo son recently broke up with his GF so I think we’ll just get on with our day. He’s got football and I’m going to a singing day. No romance at all in our house. We’re happy though.

This is another of those things that would seem really strange if it was a father doing something like this for his daughter on Valentine's Day, imo.

What the fuck?? Who on earth would think that?! And WHY?! Absolutely bloody barmy comment!!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 11/02/2026 21:47

I'm too much of a povvo practical person to care about being called fun police 😒.

Obviously spend your money how you wish , but I will say that I hate the idea of yet another thing for poorer families to have to worry about, as if Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc weren't enough to be getting on with.

Make it a thing in your family but let's not make it a thing.

Poldarke · 11/02/2026 21:47

Enjoy it OP! I’m taking DD to get her nails done and then for cake. In the evening we are going to make our own love heart shaped pizza. I love it!

In Norfolk there is a tradition where Jack Valentine visits and leaves a small gift for children. A parent or other adult knocks on the front door (and then rushes round the house unnoticed and re-enters at the back door) when the children answer the door there is a small gift on the doorstep. I always remember one of my step children saying one year "we knew it was Nanny as saw her running down the road with her hat" Nearly as devastated as finding out about the non existence of the tooth fairy or Father Christmas!

I grew up in Norfolk (not born there though) and have never heard of this. I feel cheated!

It's fine not to do it but a little biscuit for example doesn't cost much.

I'm single and have sworn off men for ever more. Therefore I like to celebrate with DD for valentines day. This year I'll make her a card and buy her a rose and a small gift. She loves it.Valentine's day is for celebrating love in all it's forms, and i'll never love anyone more than i love DD.

Nothing in Our House 🤣

Big Madness fan here. Valentines Day is for the Lovestruck.

Grizelina · 11/02/2026 21:53

They had a photo area set up for the toddler class at DGD’s playgroup and the whole theme was Valentines. As most of them can’t even speak not sure why - the toddlers mostly seem to enjoy energetic stuff rather than a bit dreamy and romantic music!

DelinquentSnails · 11/02/2026 21:54

@BringBackCatsEyes I think it’s quite a rural tradition- my mum’s family are North Norfolk farmers and we always did it.
I had a roaming childhood (diplomat’s daughter) and one year Jack Valentine made it behind the iron curtain to leave Katrina and the Waves Walking on Sunshine on my doorstep. He’s very smart.

This year he’ll be making it to the Alps (or my teens would sulk!)

As a Norfolk girl, there’s no reason you can’t start this year 🙂
