We don't want the government to lurch to the left

I am absolutely astounded that Labour think it's democratic to decide that they can lurch to the left despite being elected with a very clear promise to not tax and spend. I believe this is absolutely not what the general public want and I am really worried that the economy isn't going to survive this and we will end up with an IMF bailout that will lead to very painful spending cuts for our most vulnerable.

Please vote:
YABU :I want Labour to lurch to the left in order to increase taxation and spending
YANBU: I don't want Labour to lurch to the left and would be against further tax and spending rises

Wow I'm genuinely shocked. Do any of you actually pay tax at the moment or run a business?

The fuck is lurching to the left got to do with spending? Do people just write any random shit.

What do you mean? I don't think I was hiding my agenda. People are struggling under the crushing weight of the tax burden. Businesses are closing or moving abroad. It all leads to one place which is an IMF bailout unless we tread very very carefully

Tax and spend is a left wing philosophy. A lurch to the left will undoubtedly include higher taxes and more public spending. The lifting of the two child cap will just be the start

I agree it doesn’t look good for the Labour Party to win an election on a centrist mandate - then replace the leader following that philosophy with someone far more left wing.

Burnham or Rayner wouldn’t win an election as leaders on the kind of mandate they would prefer…

We will be getting some sort of reform coalition next anyway.

The whole thing is diabolical either way - no good alternatives either.

We should be taxing wealth more not work. I agree with Gary does economics on Instagram. There are people who live off their wealth who should be taxed more and proportionally. I would also like Labour to close some of the tax loopholes we have where corporations like Caffè Nero can report a loss in this country so as not to pay their fair share of corporation tax. Tax loopholes that benefit the wealthy is not fair when we all have to pay our way.

We earn well in our household but get squeezed by taxes like others.

Reform will get rid of the minimum wage and our employment rights as they want to leave EHCR. We will be like the US working all hours, lower pay while companies make record profits and we have to find money to pay for health insurance. It will be like hell.

ChoccieCornflake · 10/02/2026 14:13

I pay tax. I would be happy to pay more, as more is needed to improve the NHS and social care.

This seems to be a daily whinge. Sponsored by the Telegraph perhaps.

Getting so predictable.

we? Speak for yourself .

the economy has failed under right wing neoliberalism

that’s why schools and hospitals and roads and SEN and social care and crime are all struggling - and it’s why businesses are failing and it’s why we can’t afford homes any more - because right wing policies pump money from poor to rich . That’s their aim / they pretend / lie that means we al get richer as the crumbs from the table of the rich might reach a few people

Burnham is a centrist! He's a pro-business democratic socialist. Where have you got the idea that he represents a 'lurch to the left'? (As an aside, im going to be singing 'its just a lurch to the left' in my head to the Time Warp)

I'll take tax and spend over child poverty any day

notquiteruralbliss · 10/02/2026 14:20

I don't view the current labour government as even mildly left. Agree with previous posters that we should tax wealth / close loopholes before increasing income tax but I'd be happy to pay more tax for better provision of state funded services.

itsthetea · 10/02/2026 14:21

average salary you pay 4.5 k tax a year

a 250k mortgage ( about average ) you pay 6k a year interest

the banks are seeing a lot of our money

itsthetea · 10/02/2026 14:22

And I don’t see income tax rises for the less well off mooted except by Reform who want to raise income tax form the bottom 55% in Scotland - no thanks -

It's a whinge because it is so undemocratic. Would Labour have got into power with this left wing agenda? Judging by Jeremy Corbyn's performance I would wager no.

But we worked to make enough money to live on! It’s what everyone does if they ran a business. DH employed 120 people. What’s the point of putting your house on the line and being succesful if you lose it all for others who haven’t bothered? We are already seeing employers not expanding or taking on employees. We need Labour to understand business and understand how wealth is created. Without it, no growth and a stagnant economy. We have paid £millions and tax and have paid our way. The super wealthy are rare. Most people pay tax as they should but there’s a problem of taxing too much.

@Bargepole45 You are absolutely correct. If they lurch left it’s a kick in the teeth to working people who need stable employment and companies need stability to plan. We didn’t elect a left wing government and the tail always wags the dog in British politics. We get what we didn’t vote for.

What do Reform say about tax? Presumably want to spend less.

ChoccieCornflake · 10/02/2026 14:25

If you think Reform will help you in any way you are deluded

But this is the manifesto they got in on. They made some very clear policies that would have precluded them from lurching to the left. Centrists felt safe to vote for them. Now it looks like they can rip up every single promise they ever made and install some left wing leader that would never have been elected.

I just want someone in power that was actually voted in. The general public aren't stupid and I believe they don't want to lurch to the left or right. Everyone that supports this undemocratic move is leaving the door open in the next election for Reform to get in on a more moderate ticket and then lurch to the right when on power. Would you really be happy with that?

Do you want to tell me which loopholes you plan on closing? Because that ‘Caffè Nero’ one mentioned by a PP is not in the power of the government to close.
