To feel annoyed I can never have a drink because I always have to collect Dh from work?

I usually get home around 5 and Dh finishes around 9.
He isn’t allowed to park in his work car park as there is limited space and they are reserved for management.
It’s a sort of business park off a busy intersection so there’s no side roads or parking nearby.

Sometimes (not often) I really feel like coming home especially on a Friday and having a glass of wine while I make dinner but I always have to pick him up later so I can’t have a drink after work with colleagues on the odd occasion they do or with friend.
I was never a big drinker but I do resent having to drive later every night and just never being able to if I fancy ever.
He’s had this job for 6 years now and I miss sitting in the garden with a glass of wine after work, enjoying the last bit of sun of the day (in the summer) I just feel a bit restricted as his chauffeur when that should be my down time and this time of year I’d feel very unreasonable making him walk home in the dark and pouring rain just so I could have a couple of drinks after work but that doesn’t stop me from resenting that I never can.

He could walk home in about half an hour if he cut through the park or 45 minutes if he went the lit up roads but he wouldn’t be at all pleased especially in this weather and especially if it was just so I could relax with a drink while he did so.
He wouldn’t walk in the summer because he hates walking because it makes him hot and sweaty and he gets a leg rash from walking which would last days.

That's ridiculous. Half an hour is nothing? It must be less than a mile?

He needs an e-bike!

That's what my DH bought during lockdown COVID. He uses it a lot now. No parking issues and faster than the car at busy times

Be grateful to him, Op, alcohol is bad. Can’t you just be happy with a nice soft drink instead? Craving alcohol is a slippery slope into alcoholism….

A sedentary lifestyle is also bad

I wouldn’t say he was overweight but he has big thighs which do rub but overall he’s not large. He’s more rugby player build.

Rugby built guys aren't afraid to walk a couple of miles. Is he big because he works out or because he's overweight? I'm overweight, I would still happily walk half an hour to or from work.

PrayForMyBum · 10/02/2026 18:12

Maybe the sweating and the chafing is a sign he really needs to exercise more? That 30 min walk/10 min cycle could do him the power of good.

Also, my DH would never in a million years expect me to do this.

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 10/02/2026 18:13

He can absolutely walk once a week or get a taxi.

Womaninhouse17 · 10/02/2026 18:14

Taxi? Bike? Lift from a colleague? Bus? What happens if you're ill or not available? And if that's never happened, it would be interesting for you to have a night out and see how he manages then.

HideousKinky · 10/02/2026 18:15

When the spring comes, can he get a bike?

MikeRafone · 10/02/2026 18:16

get him to drive part way on a Friday and then get an uber in and back to his car or walk in and an uber back

AnneElliott · 10/02/2026 18:16

I wouldn’t do this every day. Fine to drop him off if you’re driving to work anyway but he needs to get himself home using public transport or walking or an uber if he really can’t manage a half hour walk! Many 11 year olds do this for secondary school!

Put your foot down and say you’ll pick him up if it’s absolutely awful weather but otherwise it’s his responsibility.

Freeme31 · 10/02/2026 18:16

Would you consider a non alcoholic drink during week and alcohol drink on weekends?

You must not live near me, there are many roads I would never consider cycling on, too many lorries, rural roads with poor visibility ahead, very narrow etc, you get the picture

And at this time of year there are so many potholes it's dangerous

Those don’t sound like roads you’d be likely to walk on either though? Unusual (unfortunately) for very narrow roads with lots of lorries to have pavements.

NewYearSameYou · 10/02/2026 18:18

Stop picking him up. Practice saying, 'It's not my problem to solve.'

Ponderingwindow · 10/02/2026 18:18

It wouldn’t be a drink for me. I would just resent not being done for the night. I have to get up early for work. At 9pm I want to be in my pajamas in relaxation mode.

itsthetea · 10/02/2026 18:19

Only Half an hour walk?

does he get any exercise ?

I mean yes if he is unfit and overweight walking will be uncomfortable but it would be so good for his health!

Imisscoffee2021 · 10/02/2026 18:19

Bloody hell, a bit of chub rub putting him off walking, you can wear tight shorts under to avoid. Cycling that walking distance is nothing, and I used to walk to my physically active job while pregnant which took 30 mins or so. He should walk or cycle home occasionally at least so you can enjoy your evenings, having a glass of wine while cooking is one of life's great pleasures.

My 3 yo walks further than 30
mins each way to nursery and back every day come rain or shine (in Scotland). Your husband is unbelievably lazy.

busyd4y · 10/02/2026 13:56

I read the OP and thought, I wonder how long the MN standard answer of a bike would be posted. Thanks for not disappointing 😂

I can only think of one place I've worked where anyone cycled there and that was one person. I don't know where the OP lives but for lots of us cycling just isn't a safe option

Just because you haven't known many people who cycle to work doesn't mean it's not a viable option. It's a shame more people don't do it - cheaper, quieter, less pollution, good exercise. And in some places, quicker than a car too.

crascenda · 10/02/2026 18:20

If he walked, cycled, ubered etc. home his wife would be free to get a life. He doesn't want that.

Would you consider a non alcoholic drink during week and alcohol drink on weekends?

To help a man who refuses to walk 30 mins?
What if she wants a bath? Or to see a friend? Or to do fuck all?

gototogo · 10/02/2026 18:22

Why doesn’t he cycle at least through the summer months, it’s 10 minutes by bike if 30 minutes on foot (and I’m not even fit)

Would you consider fucking off to the back of beyond and then keep on fucking off.

Why?

LittleMonks11 · 10/02/2026 18:24

Sounds like he could do with the exercise once in a while if a walk of 30-45 mins makes him an unbearably hot and sweaty mess. You’re not his Mammy.
