Inspired by a clip I just saw on Instagram.

Deep breath.

Here goes.

Robin Williams wasn’t particularly funny.

ETA “Start” obviously.

Wide legged or bootlegged jeans don't balance out wider hips especially If you're not tall. They just make you (me!) look like a short, fat cylinder.

John Lennon didn’t write a single decent melody after he left the Beatles. Imagine is the worst offender of all. It’s a dirge.

Edited

yes, the quality certainly dropped.

Barrel leg jeans look bloody awful on everyone

I don't like jeans at all and often wonder why people still wear them.

The TV show Friends is largely unfunny and the characters are not particularly likeable

Hey! Now there's no need for this kind of trash talk now is there?!

I think lady boys in Thailand pass. That's about it. Westerners may pass from 20 feet if they are small and petite but as soon as they speak it's obvious. Paris Lees being an example.

You really think it’s obvious from Paris Lees’ voice that she’s male? I think she sounds fine here. I have met bio women with deeper voices.

yet is added to everything FFS

This.
I suspect it is to disguise the cheap flavourless main ingredients.

Schools bear responsibility for this also though - although, maybe more accurately, local authorities. There are so many threads on here explaining the consequences of not having any consequences in schools and simply, children who attack others should not be able to continually do so in a school setting. Seeing my daughter's school heavily promote their beloved 'restorative approaches' is nauseating knowing that if someone hits my kid, she's the one who will be in trouble for hitting back. If someone hits a teacher, the onus is on the teacher to manage behaviour better. School is the predominant institution for the socialisation of children and a large chunk of society, including schools themselves, have forgot that socialisation is a different thing to socialising.

Parents only like consequences when they aren't for their child, otherwise they complain their child is being wronged. Schools can't do anything because they aren't being allowed to. These days parents don't seem to believe their child can tell anything but the truth, when in reality all children will probably lie at some point.

Meanwhile, Ofsted are concerning themselves with consistent handwriting and children being made to feel they 'belong'. I think Ofsted is even worse than ever before and needs to become an advisory and improvement support, rather than merely a judge.

Agree but I find a lot of 1970,s comedians very unfunny now.

It was good, clean family entertainment but never had me roaring with laughter. However, I’d take them over today’s potty-mouthed comedians any day.

helpfulperson · 07/02/2026 13:39

Beachtastic · 07/02/2026 12:54

Yes, but I think the reasons behind it are different. Men (especially young men) can get into drunken fights or clashes over drugs. Women can simply be hunted down for sport.

I think the point is about how the risk to women outside the home is actually smaller than that to men but that we ignore the fact that the risk to women inside the home is many, many times greater than that outside. Telling women they are at such risk outside is actually a way of controlling them and keeping them at home where in fact the risk is much greater.

The retired and unemployed should be banned from supermarkets at the weekend.

And people who are working have no business cluttering up shops, cafes, parks etc during office hours. Lunch breaks, fair enough.

Yeah, coffee's OK for a change now and then, but it's no real substitute for a decent cup of tea.

No that again is a misconception and there are a lot of solid statistics which underline this. Men are victim on a much bigger scale to random attacks by strangers - suggesting they're involved or it's their fault plays into the misunderstanding. But people choose to believe and patronise women about stranger danger. The media is hugely responsible for this. We are significantly more at risk from known contacts. That's not to say we're not at risk of random attacks by men, but we are made to feel that we are much more at risk than men which actually isn't true.

Is a societal control technique of women.

And yet, almost every single instance of harassment I've experienced in public has been from a man, whether it verbal humiliation, physical intimidation, or active groping, and I'm nowhere near being alone in that. 'I cheerfully wave sensible safety measures away because I think I'm above all that' is just the same minimisation we dealt with when couldn't even mention the incessant verbals and groping and intimidation because it was just a laugh.

I love Mary Trump, started following her on Twitter (before it was wrecked by half man half dalek Musk) and read her book "Too much and never enough" which I highly recommend. I watch her YouTube channel most days and her courage, insight and humour are second to none. That somone as kind, well rounded and reflective emerged from that family is remarkable. Whoops this was meant to be a quote and reply to a post about Mary Trump and I forgot to include the quote

That multi-millionaire octogenarian 'rock stars' like Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen etc should only be allowed to tour if ALL of the profits from their concerts benefit charities or food banks in whichever city they are playing in.
As I'm feeling gracious today I will allow them to keep profits from merch but beyond that, these men have more money than they or their families will ever spend so to be greedily touring at £700 plus a ticket now is a disgrace.

OMG this!!!!
Swim England has been a total effing nightmare for me and my DC!
I absolutely bloody HATE it and I have developed an irrational rage against it!😂
Jesus Christ. I simply want my DC to be able to swim front crawl with strength and to be able to keep going at the same strength for a decent distance. I want them to be able to do this so that it increases their chances of being able to get themselves out of trouble in the water (I know strong swimmers still drown, but being able to swim one stroke really well and for a good duration of time still increases your chances of getting yourself to safety in water).
But no.
Not with Swim England.
Swim England insist on not progressing my DC in their front crawl until they can perform butterfly (who tf would choose butterfly stroke if they were in danger) and dolphin (who tf would choose dolphin if they were in danger) and do under water handstands and under water forward rolls, none of which my DC can competently do. And none of which I care about them being able to do.
OMFG.
Just teach my DC to SWIM (strongly)!
And the worst thing is, having scoured every pool in my area, I cannot find a pool that offers anything other than Swim England.

Totally agree - who needs to know butterfly anyway? Save it for club swimming.

Fortunately when my son learned it wasn't as strict. And it didn't do him any harm, he swam until he went to university and worked as a lifeguard.

Hard to explain if you haven't experienced it yourself (?), but:

(1) it dissolves the illusion of separateness, making you acutely aware of the interconnectedness of everything around you, so you grasp (among other things) the impact of your actions on others

(2) it confronts you with your inner landscape (in a way that can greatly assist with resolving fear, grief, and childhood patterns of relating) and highlights your latent strengths, as well as "weaknesses"

(3) in tribal cultures that embrace this rite of passage, adulthood isn't something you declare - it's something an elder recognises in you. Having their guidance for the ceremony would help you interpret what arises, rather than get lost in it, and interpret the insights

(4) a clearly defined threshold, marked by such a ceremony, would underline the serious responsibility that comes with adulthood (moving from "I am the centre" to "I am part of a larger web") and reinforce values to live by

(5) it would address the existential anxiety and spiritual emptiness that are at the root of so many problems in our society

Not sure if I've explained it well, but all that sort of thing!!! 😜

Interesting. I can't say that I've ever been given the impression that psychedelic drugs would solve problems in society. I do think there's an argument to say that the lack of ritual and rites of passage in non-religious people's lives in much of Western society has been detrimental though.

I don't like dogs and I don't like how more and more places are dog friendly. I don't want to have a coffee with a side of smelly wet dog. Your dog may well be a big softie towards you but it's still an animal capable of attacking me, leads should be mandatory apart from in specific dog friendly areas. They are not fur babies.

Completely agree. And I also think 'Spoons are entitled to ask for proof that a dog is a trained assistance dog. The EHRC has it wrong.

Given that very nearly everywhere is dog-friendly anywhere why do you need to go to one of the very few places that isn't - and why do you want to spend your money somewhere that doesn't want your dog? Go to the very many pubs that do welcome dogs.

If you drive a car and want to park in a disabled space you have to show a blue badge so I don't see any problem at all with having to show evidence that your dog is not just an annoying pet.

Public transport should be free and funded through in increase in council tax

I agree, in France buses are free to use in many cities and towns.
