Personally I do

Do you have some context @Hmm66

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/02/2026 19:51

I don't mind being called "a young woman". Mind you, I regularly get mistaken for a student/work experience girl at work, so I clearly look a lot younger than I am!

sprigatito · 06/02/2026 19:54

I don’t think so, no. I knew someone who died at 34 and left two young children - I certainly thought of her as a young mother and it made the loss especially hard. I suppose it depends on the context. If it’s being said by a man to belittle a woman, then it’s wrong, but even then I think it’s the assumption that “young” means “lesser” that’s wrong, not the observation itself.

Zanatdy · 06/02/2026 19:55

To me they are a young woman so don’t

Leo DiCaprio, is that you?

He’d say old woman.

How do the 70 and 80 year old members of my walking netball group refer to each other?

”Girls!”

I’m in an online group of women who are all retired. We used to meet in person.

The one who has returned to Australia sometimes refers to us as “girls.” She’s the only one who does. I’d never say anything, but I resent it.

I am not a girl. I’d stopped being a girl before I had children.

Plenty of people delude themselves that they are middle aged at 60. I doubt they'll get to 120.

If you're referring to Lucy Letby, I think it's a combination of age and life stage. A single woman of 32, living with their parents is far more likely to be seen as a 'young woman' then a married 32 year old mother of 3 living in their own home.

I don’t think of middle aged as being about half of life expectancy.

I think of middle aged more as being in mid life of your adulthood. So 0-18 is childhood, and doesn’t count. 18-98+ is adulthood, so I consider middle age to be somewhere along 50 to 65.

mazedasamarchhare · 06/02/2026 20:04

Hmphffff ! I still consider myself as a young woman even if I am pushing the wrong side of 50🤣. I do sometime have to do a double take looking in the mirror, wondering who the grey haired crinkly is looking back at me!

TheBlueKoala · 06/02/2026 20:06

It would probably have felt odd when I was 32 but now at 46 I think of a 32 year old as a young woman. Give us some context @Hmm66

sorryIdidntmeanto · 06/02/2026 20:06

Not odd.

SilverPink · 06/02/2026 20:19

I’m 50s, 30s is young to me. My dads in his 90s, I’m young to him!

Ohnonononotagain · 06/02/2026 20:22

OP you aren't the same person who a month or so ago started a thread that in which they were absolutely adamant that any one 30 or over was old are you?

Please lord save me from ageism.
It's so ridiculous when one of life's certainties is we all get old. It's inevitable. Apart from for those of us who are destined not to.

StampOnTheGround · 06/02/2026 20:23

As a 32 year old, I see myself as a young woman and it is how others would describe me?

GinaXExperience · 06/02/2026 20:23

A young woman to me is someone in the first few years of womanhood, so I would not call a 32 a young woman personally.

tilypu · 06/02/2026 20:25

Depends who is saying it!

I have been described as a young woman when I was in my 40s. And to the people saying it, I was a (relatively) young woman.

Travelfairy · 06/02/2026 20:26

32 is young! Who thinks its not 🤷‍♀️

Usernamen · 06/02/2026 20:27

Most people would consider 32 young.

What I find odd is how “middle aged” now seems to stretch to 70+ when it’s more like 40-55, 60 at a push. Someone on another thread referred to themselves as a middle aged women and they were 67!

LaughingCat · 06/02/2026 20:28

But you are a young woman at 32. I’m a middle-aged woman at 42…early thirties is definitely, therefore, a young woman. If you think the ‘young’ moniker doesn’t fit, it might be that you take it all a bit too seriously 😂

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 06/02/2026 20:28

I was often referred to as a young woman when I was 32. At the time it seemed strange as I felt old. Now I'd give anything to be called a young woman 😂 and I think 32 young. It's all relative. A five year old would likely think a 32 year old ancient!

YourWinter · 06/02/2026 20:29

All my children are older than that, 32 is young. Do you think at 32 a woman is middle aged? Old?

brightpinkchoc · 06/02/2026 20:29

32 is a young woman! What would you use @Hmm66?

BerriesAlmonds · 06/02/2026 20:32

Februarysiceandsleet · 06/02/2026 19:39

According to certain academic categories
0 - 30 Young
30 - 60 Middle age
60+ Old age

I was quite offended aged 62 not to be allowed into a friend’s research project because I was officially ‘old aged.”

30 isn’t middle age because most people don’t die at 60. Middle age is 40.

RedRobyn24 · 06/02/2026 20:35

Hey! I’m 34 and consider myself a young woman!
