The good thing though is that this clearly did matter to the American people and so many of them, including Republicans, called out his racist assholery.

But I will add, just as in the UK, we elect bellends often because the other party is even worse. In the US, the other party allowed a senile president to serve the whole term - who then said he would stand again, substituting KH at late notice. I can see how someone who’d already been president (Trump) might have been more attractive than a senile man - I’m unclear why KH didn’t do something whilst Biden was president - ie take over herself because he was senile and a cancer patient.

I have to say, I don't have the stomach to look at what he posted, but as depressing as this man has been, this has reached a new low. This wasn't some generic standard racist act from behind a mask. This was the president of the United States posting hate. I'm not shocked, but it has utterly depressed me. I know many Americans support him. I know many Americans are as broken hearted and angry as we are, but worse because this bag of vomit represents them on the world stage and at home. If you have any anti trump American friends, this is a time to remember not to lump them in with the hate, they're already suffering.

It is really true that Trump doesn't have history for backtracking? He's backtracked quite a bit about his closeness to Epstein, for one thing...

One thing that stuck with me from Michelle Obama's Becoming was that Trump was one who pushed the birther theory, which caused danger to the Obama family and was wholly incorrect (the theory asserted that Obama had been born in Kenya not Hawaii so didn't qualify as a US citizen)

It was hard to argue before this incident that Trump was wholly non-racist, this is just a very public conformation imo
