Keir starmer is dead in the water

Bertiebiscuit · 04/02/2026 22:21

The UK cannot have a prime minister who gave a plum job to a man when all the time he knew that Mandelson was still close friends with an ex-con who was convicted for trafficking children for sexual abuse. Starmer is destroying the reputation of the UK, he is an embarrassment and shoukd resign, if not the Labour party should demand his resignation.

Guido Fawkes has an interesting item about a new website ‘unaffiliated’ to Labour urging voters to write to their Labour MP saying that Starmer shouldn’t be thrown out.

Starmer’s time as PM just gets weirder and weirder. And more and more laughable.

Fluffyhoglets · 06/02/2026 13:27

She's unpopular generally though. Labour would lose the next election if she even got that far due to press hounding.
You can't have someone who had to stand down as deputy leader due to the tax thing - then end up leader and expect anything but criticism.
Starmer appeals to moderates floating voters. They win the election and right now moderates won't vote Kemi or farage.
If starmer stands down it will be tories or reform win the next election. That's why theres so much pressure for him to go.

Does Starmer appeal to moderates? Does he appeal to anybody? His approval ratings suggest not. The polls suggest that Labour needn't worry about the result of the next election, they're getting wiped out.

He is actively destroying manufacturing in this country with his net zero madness. So Im hoping that his name doesn't come up too often as potential PM.

Ah, I view that differently because I do believe major change is needed to prevent climate chaos significantly impacting my children's lives.

EasternStandard · 06/02/2026 10:40

@JennyWren5why no Angela Rayner in this list? She is a front runner to do it.

Sorry, I remembered her as a potential candidate after I posted this! Let’s add her too.

Ah, I view that differently because I do believe major change is needed to prevent climate chaos significantly impacting my children's lives.

If we ever truly achieve net zero, we'll have removed roughly 1% of the world's carbon emissions. I don't think its worth trashing our economy and burdening businesses with some of the highest commercial energy prices in the world. Simultaneously, Reeves increased employer's NI and increased business rates.

Someone earlier in the thread asked "why should the government have to step in?" They've already well and truly fucking stepped in here, and now small and medium businesses are going bust as a direct consequence of Labour's ineptitude. In summary, Ed Miliband can go fuck himself as well. If he's the best Labour have to offer they should call an election and clear their desks.

I simply can't believe that someone who has come up through Criminal prosecutions would be that gullible. He took a risk, the risk didn't pay off so he should stand down.

Is it not beyond risk or gullibility? Is it not hypocrisy and lack of integrity? He doesn’t appear to care about tackling the root causes of violence against women and girls, despite his government’s claims.

A root cause is some men don’t take it seriously or challenge it, especially if it impacts their options.

He knew Mandy was in touch with Epstein after his conviction for soliciting prostitution of a minor. Why would he want, anywhere near his government, a man who’d remained in contact with a convicted paedophile? Why would he want to do that to the survivors? Or any survivors?

Then yesterday he said sorry. Sorry for what? Not thinking of survivors when he made the appointment? Or sorry for the ‘risk’ backfiring on him?

I know from personal experience that normal people, upon learning their friend is a paedophile, are disgusted and want nothing to do with him ever again. So fuck these men.

You'd think... Normal human reactions, like revulsion.

His press conference just made it worse, the MPs are unhappier too post it.

I have a feeling that KS will be gone soon - probably after the May local elections at the latest.

I feel quite sad, as I felt pretty hopeful when Labour got in. I am a Labour voter (sometimes Lib Dem) and I liked their pre-election policies and ideas, many of which are in place (Employment Rights Act, getting rid of
the two child benefit cap) but, if he goes, he’ll be leaving under a cloud and the next few years do not look good for Labour.

I’ve been feeling quite down about the economy and politics for several months.

This. See also people who are friends with known pedophiles. How could you associate with that person?

Gobacktotheworld2 · 07/02/2026 00:53

People more particularly who go and stay at their paedophile sex trafficker "best friend"'s notorious boltholes and describe these places of iniquity as "[Jeffrey's] glorious homes he likes to share with his friends (yum yum)"

If you think the "yum yum" referred to a bag of Quavers... I'm happy for you.

It would be something to lay that at their door...

I can see that Mandelson would have been well positioned to be our ambassador to a country as deep in the mire as the US, he clearly had connections with the men of influence and so I can see why Starmer appointed him.

It doesn't ring for me that Starmer would have done so had he known how deep Mandelson got with Epstein because he's been so careful with keeping to the straight & narrow his whole career. Unless we're going to find out that Starmer is as equally corrupt of course!

No ones been able to dig up real dirt on Starmer in spite of trying.

But dirt has been dug. Surely from the very start when Millionaire Starmer took all the freebies from Lord Ali....even including dresses for his wife. And he did pro bono work to get veterans prosecuted. Free speech is not on his agenda either. Look what happened to Luvy Connolly and the Father Ted author. Hes bringing that up at USA congress.

Hence the shouts of two tier Kier. Every government will make some of the populace unhappy, but most of us just want fairness. We expect it more from the left, because that’s what they preach. But so many seem to leave their principles behind when they achieve power. Starmer’s freebies didn’t sit well.

He's been so astonishungly politically naive, even for the leader of a party which has been in opposition for 14 years, right from the start. I really thought they couldn't do worse than the Tories. That went well. B of E downgraded our growth forecast and upgraded our unemployment forecast yesterday. 😔

...and also said we grew more last year than BoE predicted.... at least Labour hasn't put the UK into a recession, unlike Sunak/Hunt, UK has grown more in the last 19months than we did if the 19months before the General Election.
...
I don't think he has been naive, i think he has been arrogant & stupid, his own deputy told him not to appoint Mandelson, as did many others.

Why is he still sticking with McSweeny? he is no Alastair Campbell.

I think he's been all of those things. His naivety, like a fawn with huge eyes looking into the headlights, began right from the start when he and his cabinet appeared not to realise that once in power, people would criticise. They've cottoned on now, but they were almost seeming to say "but, but, we're the good guys, on the side of working people, you can't be nasty to us, it's not fair".

I wonder if anyone has managed to explain to him why "my father was a toolmaker" was funny. He genuinely thought people were laughing at his father being working class.

He relied heavily on McSweeney because he won the GE for him as he stated in PMQs. One part where he was truthful and not overly scripted.

Kim Johnson Labour MP first today to say Starmer should go. I think it’ll be hard for him not to.

Re your edit many on mn did buy into the toolmaker line pre GE. Incredibly.

From the get go, Labour screwed up with expenses, that alone shows huge lack of judgement and to be frank, greed, could he really not afford a suit or glasses of his own?

That set the tone for the media, who also helped set Labour up by holding back on theses stories until after the GE..... BUT there is no story if people like Starmer hadn't accepted gifts.

However, i think after 5 PM's in just a few years, i think it would be better if Starmer stays, unless of course even worse comes out.

Even Badenoch has stepped back from calling for Starmers resignation, she now says "McSweeney should go..."

Yes Engineer/Mechanic or just shut up? he had a better back story with his mother and sister

Imdunfer · 07/02/2026 08:45

My heart sinks at the idea of yet another PM, when will this end? We desperately need some continuity and stability in politics.

A political commentator, speaking on R4 said something interesting

"The Tories need Labour to do better, if they don't, then the electorate will go further to the extremes.... and Labour need a better Tory opposition, for the same reason"

May explain why Badenoch is softening her demand on Starmer must go...

Alternatively, she is watching from the sidelines, amused, letting Starmer's own side stick the boot in. Never interrupt your enemy when they are tearing themselves apart.

He’s pretty broken. His own MPs calling for him to go, shaking at the dispatch box. Kemi either faces him next week or she doesn’t, she probably realises how bad it is already for him.

senua · 07/02/2026 09:34

I suppose that she needs to be careful of sub judice rules, too. She should major on some other gaffe(s) instead, to underline that this wasn't a one-off lapse of judgement.
