Keir starmer is dead in the water

Bertiebiscuit · 04/02/2026 22:21

The UK cannot have a prime minister who gave a plum job to a man when all the time he knew that Mandelson was still close friends with an ex-con who was convicted for trafficking children for sexual abuse. Starmer is destroying the reputation of the UK, he is an embarrassment and shoukd resign, if not the Labour party should demand his resignation.

A gentle reminder as to who your next PM
may be.

It won’t be her. She might think she has some support and no doubt she does , but when push comes to shove, enough MPs will realise that she is simply not suitable

The sooner the crowd stops baying for a rotating cast of prime ministers, we’ll be in a better position as a country. This is not normality.

Agree completely. They’re treating it like online dating.

I think there is a small get out, in the respect that for this particular issue the individual isn't an elected official, which may justify a higher level of vetting as it would not be "seen to be interfering with the democratic process" as it would be with an elected official.

However I guess there is also some question over what period the information supplied was collected.

AIUI there is going to be some sort of committee that reviews the most sensitive information. But I wonder whether members of this committee would be forbidden from revealing it under parliamentary privilige, and also whether this will be enough to sate public accusations of "cover up".

I would hope that committee members would not be foolish enough to reveal anything that might genuinely comprehensive national security. And likewise, I would hope that the public might have enough common sense not to demand "transparency" to the extent that it might put national security at risk. But who knows? People are baying for blood now, so all bets are off.

I think there is certainly an argument in favour of a certain level of intrusive vetting for individuals who are appointed to high office without having been elected. There has to be a fair amount of scrutiny and due diligence. But it's an interesting question as to whether that kind of scrutiny is really feasible without the intelligence services actually having the capability to monitor all of us quite closely. I suppose ultimately it boils down to the difference between having the monitoring capability and actually acting on that capability.

I assume that any of us would be monitored pretty intrusively if we were deemed to be a serious security threat, so the capabilities must already be there.

Vinvertebrate · 05/02/2026 12:48

He’ll hang on till May, despite zero credibility, then he’ll be the fall guy for Labour’s local election bloodbath, then he’ll go. After that, it will be Lammy or Rayner, despite the absence of a single brain cell between them, and them being about as popular with the public as genital warts.

Not just poor judgement though

Starmer made a previously undisclosed visit to Palantir’s Washington HQ in Feb 2025, a visit arranged by Mandelson while his firm, Global Counsel, represented Palantir.

That meeting did not appear in the PM’s official register and only came to light later.

Later that same year, Palantir received a £240m MOD “strategic partnership” by direct award and not open competition.

That's interesting. I knew about the MOD contract but didn't know it had been agreed via an "unorthodox" process.

It's hard to keep up with all the dodgy stuff our political class get up to.

There’s always The News Quiz on radio 4, Fridays at 6.30. I usually find it better than HIGNFY.

I think Keir Starmer should stay and basically apologise and state he made an error. But he needs to fire his special advisor and say that he appreciates that things need to move in a different direction and he was badly advised.

The question is can people forgive this mistake - I can but only if he owns up and says that yes he overlooked the disgusting truths about Mandleson because he thought he would be effective.

What about the next fuck up and the next?

MrsLizzieDarcy · 05/02/2026 12:56

I still can't believe the oily buffoon was ever voted in in the first place.

It’s said about Starmer about once a week.

This might be the thing that makes him have to go but it could be salvageable if he gets rid of McSweeny.

If international reputation is what we are worried about getting rid of Starmer would be a daft move. He’s done a huge amount to improve the UK’s reputation over the last 18 months.

...he's done a huge amount to build his network for lucrative ventures after he leaves...just like Blair. He was interviewed and asked "Westminster or Davos?". His reply? - "Davos, as they are people you can see yourself working with in the future." He couldn't care less about the people of this country.

Then he should go and salvage what little dignity he has left. His performance this morning was quite frankly humiliating. The man literally has no shame.

I did actually. My point is that on here the Tories can get away with murder yet Labour seem to not.

It's said that Keir starmer could bring about world peace single handed and he would still torn to shreds. It's very strange.

It’s said he could appoint an ambassador who had links to known paedophile Epstein and still some would defend it, it’s very strange.

ZoeCM · 05/02/2026 13:11

The emails Mandelson sent Epstein when he was released from prison for soliciting sex with a minor are revolting. Evil little man.

If Starmer resigns (and I'm starting to think he will) they may as well just fit a revolving door in 10 Downing Street. The last prime minister to last longer than three years was Cameron, and the last to even make it to two years was Boris.

There’s considerably more to it than that, going back more than a decade.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/02/2026 13:16

I have to laugh at any posters still bravely and against all odds trying to insist Starmer is a decent man who has integrity. There's a ship that's long since sailed! It's like they haven't seen any news since the election. But then, to be fair, much as I knew Starmer would be a disaster, if anyone had told me then what he'd be like I'd have called them a liar. Turns out he's far worse than Johnson et al could ever be. Who would have thought the middle name of 'Mr Rules' would be 'Breaks The'?

There's also his bizarre total lack of vision for the country. Before Starmer, I'd have said Cameron was the worst PM I'd known but even with him there was an overarching plan whether I liked it or not. The same with Blair, Brown, May, Truss, Sunak and even Johnson. Maybe not a clue, but still a unifying idea.

Mandelson was a very odd appointment. Karen Pierce was an excellent ambassador and Trump had a lot of respect for her. Furthermore, Trump was openly extremely unhappy with Mandelson replacing her due to Mandelson's links with China and was considering blocking him. So the speculation upthread that there might have been genuine belief Mandelson would work well simply can't be true. Why then? I'd very much like that to be revealed but we'll never find out.

I'm going to have to address the silly claims that Starmer was immediately attacked by the press. When he became PM, we were told about the grown-ups in the room and how nice the quiet was. Who could forget Andrew Marr's eulogy on Question Time? Not so with Johnson who was greeted with violent protests by thugs who couldn't deal with their 'team' losing, thugs like the delightful student doctor shrieking to telly news about how she wanted Johnson to die in agony. I'd be so happy if she was my doctor. Or not. Starmer was given an easy ride all.through his various careers and now we're facing the consequences. They can't make him stand down though, he never went over all his other immediate-resignation catastrophes.

Is it up to the MPs or does it still go to Membership even when Labour is in power?
