AIBU to find it incredibly frustrating that there are basically no resources in the UK for people like me?

I’m genuinely starting to wonder whether I’m being unreasonable or whether this is just a massive blind spot in the UK.

I’m a woman, adult, functioning perfectly well in life for the most part, but I’m very cognitively able and have always been. I’ve been properly assessed and this a known entity (I was not born nor raised in the UK for context).

The issue is I’m finding that there are only pathways if you’re struggling but not if you’re just curious. I’m not only talking about the NHS, even privately I haven’t been able to find someone who hits the spot.

I’ve looked into:
ND assessments (very binary, very impairment-focused)
talk therapy - after years of it total waste of time and money.

People in the US suggested to find a neuropsychologist but they have eye-watering costs, mostly framed around brain injury or rehab

It’s either you’re ill or you’re fine, stop asking questions.

I’m not looking for validation, labels, or coping strategies.
I’m just trying to understand how my mind works, and it feels like that’s somehow illegitimate unless I’m suffering.

So… AIBU to find this incredibly annoying?

As a pp already pointed out, you literally said that it is “incredibly frustrating” in the title of this thread so it is obviously bothering you. How do you explain that?

I’m disappointed you haven’t responded to this, OP

Extremely frustrating is not the same as bothered, at least not in my book.

bother is like constant , rattling frustration

It bothered you enough to post on a forum and keep talking about it.

Frustration is bothering. You're smart, you know this. Whether it's constant or irregular frustration, it's still frustration.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 05/02/2026 20:32

It’s very autistic to want a concrete explanation of the way your mind works. You want to be thoroughly analysed and to be given a clear explanation of this and that. It would remove the uncertainty, give a sense of control and box things off.

And actually, MN isn’t the first or only forum on which OP has posted her not-bothered but incredibly frustrating query about being tested for being special.

In an early post, she mentioned discussing her giftedness on Reddit. She mentioned Redditors contradicting her, so I guess when they didn’t tell her what she wanted to hear, she came to MN.

BlackCatDiscoClub · 05/02/2026 20:37

So OP does have a point about how we dont actually identify and use our cleverest people in the UK. I wouldn't recommend borrowing a lot from Chinese government, but one thing they do well is identifying their cleverest kids and giving them loads of resources. They coach them to win competitions, get them to university, and many end up creating tech start ups. It definitely seems more meritocratic that the UK where its all about how much your parents earn, where you went to school, and knowing the right people to open doors: www.ft.com/content/68f60392-88bf-419c-96c7-c3d580ec9d97

what the redditors said actually is that it was unlikely I was autistic. That’s what they said.

Are those kids allowed to opt out though? Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. Some times things people are very capable of are things that long term would make them miserable. Do we want that for our kids, just be ause they're clever?

Vivienne1000 · 05/02/2026 20:39

In the country where you were born and bred, did you seek help for diagnosis? For the record there is very little money to spare in health of any kind or any public sector. You will have to pay is my guess. Even then, good luck. Not sure what you actually expect to achieve? If you are working have you access to any employment health benefit?

I’m a bit bothered (if not extremely frustrated) that we might be feeding the narcissist here but it is fun 😊

You can only be bothered OR incredibly frustrated, don't forget they're not the same thing.

DD is asleep, the curling is on the TV, I have time 😁

That was my point.

Poor OP will need to find another platform to raise this issue as Reddit and MN are not suitably impressed by her greatness.

Whenever I feel like I am wasting my time and 'gifts' by hanging around on Mumsnet, among other things, instead of writing a bestseller or - no actually, writing is the only 'gift' I have and I have currently written zero bestsellers - I will return to this thread. I feel like I am among fellow wasted geniusesessses here.

They didn’t question it at all. They definitely questioned I could be autistic.

I think the lack of questioning was more to do with them just ignoring your repeated attempts to impress them with how special you are.

Nope, for once it was on the Gifted, so we’re amongst peers.

I'm pretty sure you can just post what you want on whichever sub you want to be honest. Just because it's named something doesn't mean that only that type of person can be on there.

Are you sure you're smart? Because some very, very basic things seem to just fly right over your head.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 05/02/2026 21:24

The one person who persistently stands up and declares "look at me, I am great" is Trump. He is frighteningly deluded. OP do you not see that you are coming across the same way?

The very cleverest people I worked with were also the nicest and most modest. Interesting, isn't it?
