AIBU to find it incredibly frustrating that there are basically no resources in the UK for people like me?

I’m genuinely starting to wonder whether I’m being unreasonable or whether this is just a massive blind spot in the UK.

I’m a woman, adult, functioning perfectly well in life for the most part, but I’m very cognitively able and have always been. I’ve been properly assessed and this a known entity (I was not born nor raised in the UK for context).

The issue is I’m finding that there are only pathways if you’re struggling but not if you’re just curious. I’m not only talking about the NHS, even privately I haven’t been able to find someone who hits the spot.

I’ve looked into:
ND assessments (very binary, very impairment-focused)
talk therapy - after years of it total waste of time and money.

People in the US suggested to find a neuropsychologist but they have eye-watering costs, mostly framed around brain injury or rehab

It’s either you’re ill or you’re fine, stop asking questions.

I’m not looking for validation, labels, or coping strategies.
I’m just trying to understand how my mind works, and it feels like that’s somehow illegitimate unless I’m suffering.

So… AIBU to find this incredibly annoying?

Yes, thank you! That’s exactly what I’m looking for, and the American neuropsychologists I’ve emailed knew what I was talking about, but did say it had to be in person.

I haven’t found anyone in the UK so far, but I haven’t got in touch with everyone on the list.

I get why it's frustrating, but I suppose if that's the reality, then you either go where there is resources or you do the research yourself.

No point spending the time and energy being frustrated when you could put it to better use.

@Maybeasd Could you just explain what traits of giftedness and outstandingness you have? Other than your IQ score

tartyflette · 04/02/2026 23:41

This is quite the strangest thread I've seen on here in a long while. And some of the supposed responses are somewhat um, opaque.
Meanwhile the OP does not seem to be engaging much, if at all, wth posters who may be trying to help.

I’m fully trilingual, and understand to a degree other three languages. ( I can also read Greek, but don’t understand that much).

I can focus for hours, which has become handy for work.

i also seek knowledge for the sake of it. When I was smaller my “toilet books” were dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

My brain doesn’t have an off switch. It doesn’t bother me, but the only thing that can calm it down is”down” is Valium. I’ve taken it like 6 times in my life, but it has worked.

I have a very good memory. I can remember what people wore on any given day.

I love arguing/ debating (apparently it’s a trait)

Feeling strongly

Always searching for the ultimate conclusion

This post is clearly rage bait to wind people up. I saw a similar post a few months ago, but can’t remember the username or post title.

It was basically some batshit fantasist waxing lyrical about how extraordinary and gifted they were, looking to argue with anyone who said they sounded pretty normal.

The phrasing and the style of posting is exactly the same. I really wish I could remember that post to share here, because I’m almost certain it’s the same nutjob.

Let’s not feed the (insert word we’re not allowed to say here).

See, now I know you’re on the windup. If you think these things make you extraordinary in any way, I have news for you 😂.

That could describe me, I don't have as many languages because I lost interest in learning any more, and while I'm diagnosed ADHD I also don't think I'm particularly unusual, I've met plenty of people like me.

That you think you are unusual suggests a personality disorder more than a neurological diagnosis.

If you were given a specific date in the past, say 3rd July 2020, can you remember what happened on that day? If so, you do have a truly rare, but known, skill.

What do you want me to say? Those are the common traits of gifted adults.

You have every reason to believe that doesn’t make me extraordinary, that’s your prerogative.

They might be, but there are so many people who have them that it calls into question the use of the word gifted to describe them.

And your insistence on describing yourself as gifted would begin to point to narcissistic tendencies.

And you wouldn't be unusual in that, either.

BitterTits · 05/02/2026 06:46

To be honest you sound intellectual and curious. They aren't bad things but they don't necessarily make you "extraordinary".

Everyone has something that makes them special and different. And we don't know enough about the human brain as a species to be able to say much more than that.

You could always donate your brain to science if you think it's that special, but that's the only way it'll advance enough to get the answers you're seeking. And you won't be here to get them.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 05/02/2026 06:48

I think you’ve got Upyourselfitis.

There you go, you can have that for free.

Peridoteage · 05/02/2026 06:48

I’m a woman, adult, functioning perfectly well in life for the most part, but I’m very cognitively able and have always been.

So you probably NT then, you are not impaired. You can be different to other people and not be ND, humans exhibit a huge range of normal variation.

Services become available when there is a demand for them. A lot of things are available in the US that are not here, because of the role that private profit seeking businesses play in the medical sector in promoting unnecessary treatment that they can profit from.

As most services are state funded here this sort of self indulgent introspection is not considered necessary, most people will not spend their money on it so the lack of demand leads to a lack of supply.

In addition, there's a shortage of the psychologists & psychiatrists needed for the people who's neurodiversity impairs them, we can't spare that resource for people who want to understand their own cognitive behaviours because it interests them.

Well, fuck me. I must know rather a lot of gifted adults and children. I must also be one of them.

Can I have my medal now so that I can start officially claiming my extraordinary status and become an insufferable twat?

Please for the love of god get over yourself, and if you’re going to get your brain examined for anything, make it your glaringly obvious personality disorder.

Statistically speaking I’m still unusual. We’re now what 7 billion people? That means that around 350million people (or fewer depending on the threshold, but still hundreds of millions) so you’re likely to meet a few throughout your life. It’s pure big numbers theory.

I’ve never talked about the value judgement, if always talked about the statistics around it.

Have you spent a lot of time on US social media? Terms like "gifted" or "twice exceptional" are very common there

In the uk we don't really give a shit if you are either.

Nearly50omg · 05/02/2026 06:50

you are completely incorrect about neuropsychologists!!! There are lots in Glasgow who work for the NHS and are happy to work privately for you to assess whatever you want to investigate! Of course it will be around the price the other clinic quoted if not more but you get a full assessment of everything going on in your brain

No you aren’t! Most of the kids I know who have been assessed properly and have autism and or adhd are also exceptionally gifted - far more than you are! Stop spouting “facts” when you actually don’t know much at all!

I’m surprised about the lack of acedemic research. I’ve only found a couple of publications by the same lady, and someone who’s currently doing some research at Bristol University.

i found more research from a couple of Polish universities but maybe that’s not surprising as one of the the theories was coined by a Polish psychologist.

So you're extraordinary, a statistical unicorn, a being made of the purest forms of light and stardust, you're incredibly gifted, perfoming and what the hell not, but you expect to be offered help and resources for...for what exactly?

I’ve emailed a few, called a few others and a couple have told me they don’t do it and specialise more in evidence for insurance claims!

You have just described sooo many of us with adhd!! VERY VERY common I’m afraid and not rare at all😂🤣🤣 I can read and understand modern Greek and classical Greek and Latin. Picked it up easier than English and got a degree in it all in half the time everyone else does! The brain not turning off is classical adhd! At night it ramps up and won’t shut up and it’s less tiring not sleeping
