Is my DS’s tutor being unreasonable

PWPmum · 04/02/2026 08:39

My DS 11 who is in year 6 has a weekly tutor to help him prepare for his SATs and support his spelling. He is dyslexic. She insists on being paid at the beginning of the month with the sessions she will teach agreed in advance.
My DS is not well today. So I contacted the tutor to let her know he can’t do the lesson today and asked if we could roll the lesson over
she has replied saying as the cancellation is on the day and her time is booked out, there is no rolling over or refund.
But there will be no lesson today so part of me feels why should I pay?
She’s offered to teach him at the weekend but we’re busy then.
I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable or not to push for the credit to go towards next month or not.

YABU, she has offered an alternative, it is not her fault your child is ill. She is running a business.

KurtCobainLover · 04/02/2026 08:41

I think it’s standard if you cancel on the day. Both my DC have tutors and it’s in the contracts that they need 48 hours notice to cancel the lesson.

This is pretty standard. She‘s had to prepare and it’s not her fault that your DS is unwell and youre too busy at the weekend. Shes given you a perfectly good alternative which you cannot or do not wish to take up.

Largestlegocollectionever · 04/02/2026 08:42

I can’t believe how cheeky you are! Of course you should pay, the tutor now can’t fill the slot so has lost the time - thus the money.
this is 100% YABU!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 04/02/2026 08:43

She’s offered to teach him at the weekend but we’re busy then.

This is more than generous.

Yab quite U.

dottiedodah · 04/02/2026 08:43

It's been a long time ago now ,but we had a tutor for my DS. We paid in full and there were no refunds .She has her own bills to pay ,and has offered the weekend which is decent of her .She probably has several DC to teach.

lunar1 · 04/02/2026 08:44

She’s been more than reasonable

cococlaudine · 04/02/2026 08:44

I get your son is ill- but she is now without funds that have been alloted due to your commitment. Is this not in her agreement?

if there is no financial consequence for same day cancellations, kids are ill/at football tournaments/granny is over from Portugal so no lesson this week all the time- and you can’t make a living off that. (I was a tutor)

She’s offered another slot at the weekend, you don’t want it

Ask if she can set your son some comprehensions or an extended writing task for when he’s perked up and then she can use some of your ‘paid time’ for her feedback and making

labradorservant · 04/02/2026 08:44

These are perfectly normal terms. Which you will have sighed up to. She was even very generous to give up an hour of her weekend but you are busy. You could unbusy yourself if you don’t want to lose the money.

Mamadothehump · 04/02/2026 08:45

Hopefully this is a reverse as surely no one would deem this reasonable!!

marcyhermit · 04/02/2026 08:46

She has bills to pay, you are still taking up her time whether your son attends or not - it's not like she can fill that slot with someone else!

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 04/02/2026 08:46

Of course you are BU. Incredibly so.

She planned her workload for the month around the sessions that you had committed to. For all you know, she may have turned down other work that she could have done in your slot. Why should she be out of pocket just because you can't make it?

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 08:46

She was kind to offer a session this week-end. My son plays tennis- paid a year in advance. If he's sick there won't be a refund or extra session.
If you reschedule a week in advance that would be one thing. But I don't get how you think that she owes you one session because your child is ill. It's not like she can take on another client with such short notice. YABU

PurpleThistle7 · 04/02/2026 08:46

I’m about to hire a tutor for my daughter and it’s 24 hours notice to cancel. She was more than generous in offering another time, she has bills and a schedule and you need to respect that.

Hoardasurass · 04/02/2026 08:47

Its standard practice for all business to not refund on day cancellations.
Being upset or disappointed is ridiculous as is not wanting to pay for the time of a professional just because you dont like the standard cancellation policy

usaywhat · 04/02/2026 08:47

She’s offered you the weekend
That
was decent of her

ekther move / cancel your weekend plans that clash with the lesson or accept the loss

Namechangeforthis88 · 04/02/2026 08:48

In life generally, it's rare to get your money back for something you can't attend at 24 hours notice. Most businesses wouldn't survive if they allowed people to cancel day of at no cost.

TappyGilmore · 04/02/2026 08:48

Of course you are being unreasonable. She cannot book another child into that time slot at such short notice, so she just loses income if your son doesn’t attend.

If it was an activity in a regular time slot that you paid per term, such a judo class, and he couldn’t attend due to illness, I’m sure you would just accept the loss of the paid lesson.

You’re lucky that she has offered to tutor on the weekend instead. That is going above and beyond.

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 04/02/2026 08:50

You cannot possibly be serious?

BernardButlersBra · 04/02/2026 08:50

She’s running a business, she’s not just there for your convenience. She’s offered an alternative after all

Lampzade · 04/02/2026 08:51

YABU
My dcs had tutors for many years . If I had to cancel on the day whatever the reason the tutor would receive full pay and I didn’t begrudge them . You were even fortunate that she offered you an alternative .
If she is a good tutor I would advise you not to make a fuss or you could find that your son is without a tutor

chunkyBoo · 04/02/2026 08:51

Completely unreasonable on your part, same thing happens in many similar situations like personal training, dentist etc

Absolutely. If I were the tutor I would drop you at the earliest opportunity.
