Is my DS’s tutor being unreasonable

PWPmum · 04/02/2026 08:39

My DS 11 who is in year 6 has a weekly tutor to help him prepare for his SATs and support his spelling. He is dyslexic. She insists on being paid at the beginning of the month with the sessions she will teach agreed in advance.
My DS is not well today. So I contacted the tutor to let her know he can’t do the lesson today and asked if we could roll the lesson over
she has replied saying as the cancellation is on the day and her time is booked out, there is no rolling over or refund.
But there will be no lesson today so part of me feels why should I pay?
She’s offered to teach him at the weekend but we’re busy then.
I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable or not to push for the credit to go towards next month or not.

She very generously offered you a weekend slot instead but you’re too “busy”? Where are your priorities?

BillieWiper · 04/02/2026 09:57

So when a child is ill, you give less than 24 hours notice, reject the alternative she offered and that leaves her out of pocket.

Yabu.

OrigamiOwls · 04/02/2026 09:58

You've cancelled on the day, she can't refill that spot at short notice.
Why should she lose money because your child is ill?

You can push for it to be rolled over, but you would be likely to be looking for a new tutor.

pomegranate91 · 04/02/2026 09:58

people like you are why she ‘insists’ on being paid at the start of the month.

ClaredeBear · 04/02/2026 09:59

If it wasn’t for her offering an alternative I might think she could do better on good will but she did and you can’t do it.

She only offered one time slot at the weekend which is when my DS has a sports club.
It just feels a bit off that she won’t credit the lesson into next month as I’ve recommended her to other people so she’s benefitted from that and one time she cancelled on the day as she was unwell and that time she did roll the credit over.

YABVU. When my DD was ill and I called on the morning it didn't even occur to me to ask for a refund, and I was delighted they offered a make up session. This is a fairly large tutoring company whose T&C say that you can move sessions but I'd assumed like most things, it would require notice.

Well that was her choice to cancel. Can you not see the difference?

MikeRafone · 04/02/2026 10:02

If you walked into a pub and ordered a lasagna at the bar with chips and salad - paid for it and a drink then sat down. The lasagna is brought out to you but you suddenly feel sick and can't eat your food - should you get a refund or a credit note for the lasagna as you can't eat it?

gototogo · 04/02/2026 10:03

she has reserved the slot for you whether you use it or not, it’s her job! She even offered an alternative which you have turned down yabu. No do not be that parent

Op, you just don’t get it do you?
It is not her business whether your ds has sports lessons. She offered you an alternative slot and you can’t do it . That is on you
Also, she is the tutor so if she is unwell and cancels the lessons then she owes it to you .
Honestly, carry on being resentful and you will end up without a tutor

Surely you can see she'll only be able to offer times she's free. It may be that's the only gap she has between her other students. Only you can decide which is more important, but the sports club probably won't give you a refund if he misses a session either.

Perhaps it’s OP who would benefit from some tutoring in how the world works.

SpryLilacSnake · 04/02/2026 10:07

This is crazy, it's her job.

So if your boss says you can't come to work today because they are ill/there is a leak/they just don't fancy having you work today, you wouldn't expect to get paid? And you'd be ok with that happening potentially a few times a month? In that situation I think you'd be very generous to offer to work the weekend instead, as she has been.

You are unbelievably entitled, OP.

She didn't have to offer you an alternative slot at all, and yet you're still ungrateful.

There is nothing even remotely "off" about her expecting you to pay for a slot that she couldn't use for someone else, and it's amazing that you're still saying this despite nearly everyone saying that you are BU.

Presumably you recommended her because you thought she was good. She doesn't owe you anything for that. If she is good, she won't have difficulty getting students in any case.

Well, yes, because she caused the inconvenience (for lack of a better word) in that case. This time, you cancelled at short notice and left her with a slot she couldn't fill, so you have to pay her for her time.

This is completely normal. For example, every time I book an appointment with my hairdresser, I tick a box confirming that if I cancel with less than 48 hours notice, my card will be charged for the full service.

The tutor was generous enough to offer a weekend slot and you would be ridiculously unreasonable to push for a lesson credit.

She credited you the day she was unwell because she cancelled and couldn't provide the service that you paid for which is completely different from you cancelling at short notice when she is willing and able to fulfill her obligations under your contract hence you still have to pay.
You're coming across as a massively entitled CF get a grip and such up the lost lesson.
Oh and her offer of a replacement lesson at the weekend on her time was a kindness from her if you cant arrange your time for the 1 slot she had left then tough she was under no obligation to offer ot and even less to arrange it for a time that suits you.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/02/2026 10:16

If you cancelled your dentist appointment on the morning of your appointment, would you expect to pay or would they be happy to roll the charge onto a future appointment?

I would have to pay my dentist, just as you should have to pay this tutor. It's a business.

CatkinToadflax · 04/02/2026 10:16

There’s nothing “off” about it at all. The tutor is available to teach your son. She shouldn’t miss out on being paid because unfortunately he’s ill.

My children have an extracurricular tutor and we have to give 24 hours’ notice of a cancellation, regardless of the reason (including DS2 once being in A&E), or we pay in full. If the tutor is unavailable then we don’t pay. I’m sure this is standard.

I hope your son feels better soon.

Nogoodusername · 04/02/2026 10:17

Standard for tutoring - be it academic, music, performing arts. She can’t use the slot as it is a same day cancellation so you are asking her to take a pay cut for the day: of course it’s a no

Brefugee · 04/02/2026 10:17

well OP, now you know why she asks for payment in advance, eh?

YABU and you know it. If you are unhappy, find another tutor giving the proper requisite contracted notice

chipsticksmammy · 04/02/2026 10:18

This is a reverse or YABVU.

What happens when you cancel any service on the day?

She has been very kind to offer another time.

No, she's benefiting from her own hard work, skill and reputation.
