To think I should go to minor injuries?

DH says probably nothing! I am a bit concerned myself.
These are my symptoms:
Random prodding pain in upper back
On Sunday evening, I was driving and I suddenly felt a pulsating, deep pain in the side of my lower back. This came in waves varying from uncomfortable to a sudden shock of pain which would make me groan out loud, for around 5 hours until I went to sleep. Since then, it has happened twice but only for around 15minutes at a time.
I have also been having stomach pain, almost like a burning feeling on and off.
I have felt nauseous on and off yesterday and especially today

Should I go, or will they tell me to bugger off and stop wasting their time?!

OP, I just saw your post about palpitations. I’m really sorry if I’m wasting your time but actually I hope I am. Please go to an and e // call 999 even/especially if the pain goes away.

Paperwhite209 · 03/02/2026 20:53

This was my thought exactly on reading the symptoms.

OP I would honestly consider a trip to A&E - you need a ultrasound to rule out the possibility of an issue with your aorta.

It's unlikely but not impossible as this post shows and better to be over cautious than leave it too late.

So she needs an ultrasound of her aorta an ultrasound of her gallbladder and an ultrasound of her kidneys after pain that happened 2 days ago that she has seen a dr for already and shes been living her life normally for the last 2 days im sure a&e will be right up for that and will rush her straight through ahead of all the dying people.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 03/02/2026 21:05

When was your last period?

This could be an ectopic pregnancy. You sometimes get a negative pregnancy test in an ectopic.

(In any case, the tests the NHS use aren't very sensitive. Nowhere near as good as the ones in the shops)

Nezukokamado · 03/02/2026 21:05

@Forenspy OP, I don't know what your local a&e is like, but it's a&e and urgent care all in one so you are triaged appropriately. They are very kind. If you are in pain and worried and yours is like this, just go. It's not fun being scared at the same time as in pain not knowing what's wrong.

Yeah a&e should scan for this to they might as well just stick you in an mri for a full body scan. But you can ask the paramedics this when you call for an emergency ambulance if this is possible 🤔

My former high school boyfriend carried on with his normal life for a week despite various pains, and some mild breathing difficulties.

Then dropped dead of an aortic aneurysm on the last day of his holiday with his young family at the age of 39.

It's perfectly possible to carry on with normal life and dismiss symptoms which can be devastating.

Absolutely and things like this will happen to 1% of the population. People drop dead with no symptoms so should we all call an ambulance to take us to a&e just in case

FFS I wasn't suggesting that.

Just adding yet another differential diagnosis to the list.

Are you a doctor?

You should stop being so dismissive. Just because her urine test was clear and observations were normal does not mean she doesn't have something acute going on. She can't get a GP appointment until the 25th Feb. Urgent care didn't listen to her about the pain and where it was located and assumed it was muscular and dismissed the OP that all was fine.

I agree calling 999 is excessive but it wouldn't be unreasonable to get checked in A+E as the UTC didn't do any tests that would rule out other acute conditions.

There's no need to be so rude and aggressive.

Please get off your high horse. I have never suggested the OP calls an ambulance.

Not have I said anything about gallstones or kidney issues which I understand have been ruled out, based on which, her symptoms do indicate a possibility (and as I stated, it's a small one as they are more common in men) of something going on with her aorta.

The OP asked for opinions on her current health issues...I offered mine. That's all.

LaGioiosanotLeviosa · 03/02/2026 21:16

Are you she has been seen by a dr. If she rings her gp at opening tomorrow and asks for an emergency appointment they will give her one she clearly didn't do this hence the appointment on the 25th

It is. And that’s a devastating story, but exceedingly rare. If we start advising everyone who had pain two days ago (which actually wasn’t bad enough to trigger an A&E visit at the time) and has now resolved to go to A&E the system would actually collapse overnight. Where do you draw the line?

OP has had her BP and HR checked and told it was normal. Her urine sample was normal so not going to be kidney stones. Pregnancy test negative, as reliable as any shop bought test, again exceedingly unlikely to be ectopic given atypical presentation and negative test. May be gallstones but this is best investigated routinely unless there are signs of blockage (laid out in post above).

If everyone attended for every episode of pain “just to be safe” it will actually make it less safe because the system would be overwhelmed and it becomes harder to identify those people who are actually properly sick and provide the care they need.

My mum died died of aortic dissection after her symptoms were dismissed as back ache. And her symptoms were very similar to OP. Very funny, isn’t it, brainbox?

OP, please call 999 now and get yourself checked out properly

Edited

Well I am genuinely sorry to hear you went through that but let's be realistic here. She has already been assessed by a medical professional? You cannot ring 999, which is there for life threatening scenarios, on a bit of back pain. The call handlers (rightly so) will probably say it's an 8 hours wait for things like that.

do you call 999 every time you have a headache in case you're having a stroke?
the OP needs assessing, but this isn't cardiac arrest or seizure territory to warren the dispatch of an emergency ambulance when the OP is up and about, walking her dog and driving etc.

I tried to make an appointment, they didn’t have anything until the 25th!

Did you tell them it was an urgent appointment you needed?

Nearly50omg · 03/02/2026 21:21

Go see an osteopath. They will work out if it’s muscular etc and if it isn’t will more then likely have a better idea what it is too! Also have you tried taking a Nexium tablet? You get them from every supermarket etc for reflux. If that works then you have gord which can also make you feel like you’re having a heart attack the pain is that bad when it flares up and a nexium can stop it

Op has also repeatedly said how much she struggles with anxiety do you think online diagnosis or telling her stories of peoples deaths is helpful.

It’s not unbearable right now, at the moment I’m only getting upper back prodding and some stomach pain! But I am mostly concerned about what it could be, and would like to know what to do about it before/if it gets worse! I also have anxiety so I am definitely feeling worried about it

Of course you are worried. Hopefully you'll have some luck with 111. Fingers crossed.

I would do the 111 online questionnaire. I also have anxiety so I completely understand your worries. If it is persistent and progressive then please do get checked!

WellErrr · 03/02/2026 21:34

Google ‘shoulder tip pain.’ Does it sound like that?
Issues in the abdomen (usually wind) can cause shoulder pain.

You should have had full urinalysis, not just a pregnancy test. Do you know if you did? They should have done a urine test to check for leukocytes (sign of infection), blood, protein, glucose, ketones etc.

My first thought was UTI. Could you go back to urgent care and say you’re not happy and still worried? Ask for bloods including FBC (full blood count), liver function, kidney function and CRP (infection marker). And full urinalysis. State that you are worried about an infection and want to rule it out.

There’s nothing wrong with going back. We’re all just guessing here 🙂

I did do the online questionnaire when it first happened, and it said ‘seek help now’ with a list of my nearby a&e, but it was late at night and I stupidly told myself, I am probably being dramatic, if it’s still there in the morning I’ll go, and by the time I woke up it had died down a little. However it still hasn’t stopped entirely (although is less painful than Sundays) which is why I finally decided to go this afternoon. Thank you

I wish I went went it first happened, perhaps they would’ve taken me a little more seriously! Like I said, even if it isn’t something like kidney disease or worse, I still am concerned about what that was!

In the lower area it’s on the left, up by my shoulder blade is mostly in the right side but occasionally the left. The shoulder blade pain isn’t extremely painful, it’s more of an uncomfortable feeling of someone prodding me with their finger! They just took my blood pressure and put a clamp on my finger

I had similar one sided pain and shoulder pain with an ovarian cyst.
