To think I should go to minor injuries?

DH says probably nothing! I am a bit concerned myself.
These are my symptoms:
Random prodding pain in upper back
On Sunday evening, I was driving and I suddenly felt a pulsating, deep pain in the side of my lower back. This came in waves varying from uncomfortable to a sudden shock of pain which would make me groan out loud, for around 5 hours until I went to sleep. Since then, it has happened twice but only for around 15minutes at a time.
I have also been having stomach pain, almost like a burning feeling on and off.
I have felt nauseous on and off yesterday and especially today

Should I go, or will they tell me to bugger off and stop wasting their time?!

i went to A&E as I was having stomach pains, burning sensation, throwing up that included a tiny amount of blood. I was triaged and sent to the surgical department. They wouldn’t do a scan there and then, I had to wait for an appointment to come through which was about a month, then I waited 12 weeks for the results and only got them when I emailed PALS. Was a gallstone but on the list to have my gallbladder removed. To cut an extremely long story short, I ended up paying privately to have it removed due to the severity of the attacks and length of wait on the NHS.

Do get a second opinion.

Maybe do a GP appointment. They may take bloods, give medication and then if that doesn't help they can refer you to gastro in hospital.

Try not to worry. It's unlikely to be anything life threatening. Take some painkillers and rub ibuprofen gel on the sore bits?

Hope you feel better soon x

Are you my GP from 10 years ago? I was told exactly this when I had exactly the same symptoms which then got critical after about 3 weeks and it was in fact acute pancreatitus caused by a blockage due to gallbladder sludge. And yes, possibly life threatening - I ended up in hospital very unwell and it took a good 6 months and lots of other tests to start feeling better after.
OP please go to the GP asap and dont let them fob you off. You need bloods done and for them to check your pancreas enzyme levels.

No chance you could be pregnant? Ectopic pregnancy typically gives shoulder tip pain, although sounds like your pain is a bit lower than that. Gall bladder is on the right hand side, couldn't be a gall bladder stone or something? Or kidney stone?
I'm no medic, just throwing ideas out there.... Hope you get some proper input soon.

And the urine test - what did they test for with your urine?

That they couldn’t find anything in it, and that I’m not pregnant

yes - I had similar and it was gallstones too and I had my gallbladder out

Forenspy · 03/02/2026 20:00

I thankfully haven’t actually thrown up, just felt nauseous!

So it came up blank for key tests that people on here seem to think you should go to A&E for - kidneys, gallbladder etc?

snowdaze76 · 03/02/2026 20:04

Kidney stones? I had similar but when the pain hit it was a worse than childbirth.

I assume so, but I am still concerned about the pain anyway! Perhaps even more so now. I was almost certain it was kidney stones or a kidney infection. What else could it be?

Why would you ask me? I'm not a doctor! Of course you are concerned about the pain. No one said you shouldn't be. So what did they say when you asked them what painkillers you could safely take and what the best next steps would be?

H.pylori. You have all the symptoms, it's horrible.

They told me to take neurophen and put ice on it. I said I had already taken painkillers and they didn’t do anything and she just reiterated to put ice or a hot compress on it

If your stomach is gurgling, could it be trapped wind? You can get awful pain in your shoulder blades from trapped wind, I had it last year, felt very nauseous and had pain in my back and sided. I took codeine and peppermint oil/tea. It took about a week for it to disappear.

Climbingrosexx · 03/02/2026 20:09

DeftWasp · 03/02/2026 19:47

Well, you certainly now don't go to A&E!! its been seen by a medic and they obviously saw no red flags, so there is no emergency scenario now, that's been checked - if it continues to bother you go to the GP who can organise tests if they think appropriate.

If you are in that much pain you advocate for yourself and do go to A&E. I have a family member who was sent away with a burst appendix which resulted in a very, very long road to recovery and left any longer is likely to have been fatal.

Not all painkillers are created equal - so you've been taking ibuprofen and it hasn't worked? Have you taken it according to the regime - i.e. every four hours? Have the compresses helped at all? You only went late this afternoon right? So stuff has to take time to work.

Yes, and paracetamol. No, they haven’t, as it isn’t back pai

How long can trapped wind last for? And would it cause the severe pain I had on Sunday in my flank area? It was on the back of my love handles Blush

Maybe call 111 and see what they say?

ChapmanFarm · 03/02/2026 20:14

Could it be trapped wind? It can be very painful and radiate to the back and shoulders.

Might be worth eliminating it as a possibility by taking an indigestion remedy.

Nancylancy · 03/02/2026 20:14

ShakyFridge · 03/02/2026 16:43

I mean, you need to go somewhere. It might be your gallbladder.

I came on to say it sounds like a similar pattern of pain to gallbladder / gallstones, especially with you having some gastric symptoms as well. Mine used to come on exactly like this - I'd feel a bit weird, almost a bit like indigestion, then all of a sudden I would get terrible pain. It was in my upper stomach mostly but did radiate round to the side of my back too. Then it would go off as quickly as it came on. It could also last for hours, or for just a few minutes. I would be pushing for them to look into it further.
Could be wrong but it doesn't sound right to me!

That's a good point too, constipation and trapped wind can feel REALLY painful and can make you feel awful. Could be all sorts! I'd probably go get checked out.

Sorry? That makes no sense. 'No they haven't as it is isn't back pain'. Painkillers don't just work for backs, neither do compresses, you need to put the latter where the pain is. Seriously if you are unhappy with the care and advice you got at UC then call 111 as I believe people recommended before (I know I did).

ZanyTealQuail · 03/02/2026 20:18

Definitely call 111 that is literally what it's for
