‘Official estimates suggest the cost of scrapping the cap will total £13.6 billion over the next five years.

The Tories said families currently affected by the cap are in line to receive windfalls worth an average £25,000 each over that period.

But the biggest families will gain far more. Thousands of families with five children will receive around £10,900 a year while those with six children will get an extra £16,600 a year.
Almost half of the families involved have no one in work.‘

Labour benefits plan 'will hand £25,000' to biggest jobless families

Ministers will bring forward legislation on Tuesday to lift the limit on benefit payments which was imposed in 2017.

Still waiting for the figures.

Why don’t you give me your figures if you’re so knowledgeable? I can only speak of my own experience which is many couples in our local primary school living together now submitting two addresses to the school office and children claiming fsm because daddy lives with his parents.
Parents requesting an assessment for autism or adhd because they KNOW they can claim extra money for said child which then means the benefit cap doesn’t count.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 21:51

@Lmktrfaccording to a few people on this thread, you’re only allowed to be a victim if you’re on benefits! Just an FYI! But I totally appreciate how frustrated you must feel. The system is abused by many, but apparently we’re not allowed to say that out loud either!

My DH works so so hard. He came from absolute nothing whatsoever to be the successful man he is today. Works tirelessly throughout the week and even has to work weekends. He even had to work on our holiday and comes back at 3am!

There's a reason he gets paid so much, he works so hard. DS tells me "dad works so hard. I'm worried about him. He does so much for us."

Yes, if you have no moral compass

No, you can't because you can not choose to work and not be hassled by the JC for work search etc.

You made a claim, so you need to back it up.

Are you being hassled to search for work?

TheThinkingEconomist · 03/02/2026 21:52

Agreed.

Moving to a more contributions made model would also reduce the corrosive over-reliance on welfare because it then also becomes a function of "what you get out is proportional to how much you pay in". It would cut down the entitled attitudes that have been on display on this thread.

The sooner this system is introduced the better.

Don't think anyone could complain.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 21:59

@XenoBitchwould love to see that and then they wouldn’t need to be on UC! Problem solved! My question is, why don’t they just go and get a job in the first place then? Instead of volunteering could call it community service to give a little back!

Community service is for criminals.
If a job needs doing, pay them properly.
The job market is dire right now.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 21:56

@Thisisnotmyidso much of this happening but according to some on this thread the system is never abused!

It’s absolutely abused. There are people who need it for genuine support but there are plently of people out there who know how to play the system and manage to get almost everything possible.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 22:02

@Lmktrf he sounds a fantastic guy! I hope you get to spend some quality time together! You should be bloody proud and he’s a good role model
for your son! Sorry it’s so relentless xxx

No one hates poor people but I do believe in deserving and undeserving poor. The undeserving are those who have children while already living in poverty. Who have child after child with an unsuitable partner, who have children without ever having worked a day in their lives. And who have the audacity to speak out against those paying for their lifestyle and say it’s not enough!

So their children should suffer more then?

How would you propose categorising that?

And are you talking about men having children with “unsuitable partners” or are we only demonising women today?

EasternStandard · 03/02/2026 22:04

XenoBitch · 03/02/2026 21:59

Not me, no.

So you can live with benefits and not be hassled to get work

We do seem to have a different system here as pp have said

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 22:05

No it’s not! I used to do it at school - visited the elderly, worked in charity shops etc! It’s about giving back. why are you so opposed to getting jobless UC claimants doing anything that doesn’t involve sitting at home all day? I don’t get your attitude!

I am in the LCWRA group. We do not have work search commitments.

It’s also worth mentioning that many jobseekers ARE forced to do slave labour “community service” by working for free. It rarely ends in a job, and just ends in businesses getting free staff for a week

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 22:06

@EasternStandard I think @XenoBitchfull time job is Mumsnet! If you say the sky is blue she’ll say it’s yellow etc etc!

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 22:06

@FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoodscan you give me examples as I know zero UC claimants that do this. And again, if they do that why can’t they go get a job and get paid?

Yes he is. We've had our downs. But we've always loved each other and our DC. We are so much stronger now and in early spring we hope to go away together to Spain (neither of us have been).
