‘Official estimates suggest the cost of scrapping the cap will total £13.6 billion over the next five years.

The Tories said families currently affected by the cap are in line to receive windfalls worth an average £25,000 each over that period.

But the biggest families will gain far more. Thousands of families with five children will receive around £10,900 a year while those with six children will get an extra £16,600 a year.
Almost half of the families involved have no one in work.‘

Labour benefits plan 'will hand £25,000' to biggest jobless families

Ministers will bring forward legislation on Tuesday to lift the limit on benefit payments which was imposed in 2017.

I do not accept that the benefits bill is unsustainable. What is never published in these Daily Fail articles is that tax receipts are also rising.

Pensions and the aging population are a problem, but without stimulating growth, which requires spending, there is nothing we can do about the latter, and people seem reluctant to do anything about the former.

Lack of growth is a massive issue caused by austerity. More austerity is not going to fix the problem.

Lack of "growth" comes from poor productivity growth.

And poor productivity growth comes from poor levels of productive investment.

As it stands, excessive welfare (consumption) on the old and working age unproductive is crowding out productive investment.

These are fairly basic economic facts that apply to the UK. So the growth of welfare spending needs to be curtailed in favour of investment, as the UK cannot borrow its way out of this problem given the size of its debt service costs (which are already eating 9% of all tac revenue collected at £120bn/year).

Well we just have to tell ourselves that this incompetent government only have three more years and then they’re out. Then all these freebies will just be reversed, so I would caution people not to get too comfortable with their windfall, and to make back up plans as to how they intend to financially support themselves long term.

Yes three more years and everything will be reversed. Enjoy it while you can everybody.

The awards are not based on costs, but on how the disability affects a person. Hectoring disabled people with countless questions about costs, is not going to change that. It is the Government who set the criteria.

I'm not hectoring disabled people I'm suggesting we need a new system based on costs as our current system is unsustainable.

I'm suggesting that the system needs an overhaul too. I manage to say that without denigrating disabled people, or belittling certain conditions. It's a pity that others can't seem to do the same. Yes the Government needs to make changes. The Conservatives are the same people who ushered in PIP, and all the changes, who now wish to crow from the sidelines about how bloated it now is.

It's a Daily Fail myth apparently...

The cap pushed hundreds of thousands of children into poverty.

why on earth would you be ok with that?

Why should they? Let the Government answer their questions.

Maybe because being disabled and on benefits does not mean you are economically or politically literate.

You don't think bigger bills and few workers is unsustainable?

Their parents pushed them in to poverty.

Before pushing people off benefits, maybe we should make sure there are accessible jobs willing to hire disabled people with all the needed accommodations?

Incase you haven’t realised it already, people are mainly arguing here that the criteria currently set are nonsense, need to be binned and the government needs to start at the beginning again, looking after people with serious long term debilitating conditions such as a stroke etc, or children born with profound disabilities.

Not manageable mental health conditions and bad backs.

Do you mean the 2 child cap? How did it push kids into poverty. It was introduced with a years notice so anyone who chose to get pregnant with a 3rd plus kid knew that in advance.

Some of us already have enough disability admin. I don't fancy anymore

Yes. 2.5 job seekers to every vacancy right now.
Bumping the disabled off of benefits will make that figure even worse.

Their parents pushed them in to poverty.

So….they deserve it?

Or they don’t deserve help from the state that has a duty of care to them?

Ate you saying parents have secret stashes of cash and aren’t feeding their kids or do you see benefit parents as being lazy Wayne and Waynetta type slobs??

While there are not enough jobs to resolve this, I don't think it's the most pressing issue, no.

The growing welfare bill does worry me, but that's because it concerns me that in 2026, in the 6th biggest economy in the world, with an allegedy world class health service, people are getting sicker.

I do t need one People were told that the 2 cap benefit thing was coming. It affected no current kids or none that anyone was pregnant with when they made the announcement.

Therefore people chose to have the extra kids knowing there was no extra money for them. Can't blame the government for that

Stop making shit up.

Nobody said they deserved it.

The benefits cap didn't push them into poverty, their parents did.

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 03/02/2026 20:02

Would you like a source that explains this and gives the numbers?

It reduced the household income, and the household income is the measure of poverty, so yes it statistically pushed those kids into poverty. But if was an important measure that showed those on benefits that we would not support them to endlessly expand their families without thinking of the financial consequences. responsible taxpayers are weighing up carefully whether they can afford that much wanted extra child. They shouldn’t be asked to fund others thoughtlessness.

Why ask the question then if you didn’t wanna hear an answer?

Would it get in the way of your hand writing over poor people?

But let’s say you’re right - are you suggesting that children should suffer in poverty because of the choices of their parents?
