To be confused as to why hiring a cleaner is seen as an indulgence?

This is something that I see time and again on this site, and it is SO WEIRD. People seem to think that it is the height of luxury to have a housecleaner, and also seem to be strangely apologetic about it, offering disclaimers as to why they need one. Also, I've noticed that on threads when someone has a problem with their cleaning service, they will get several posts telling them to 'clean their own house'. Nobody would tell someone to 'service their own boiler' or 'fix their own toilet'! I don't understand it at all. I have a cleaner and I wouldn't be without her.

OP posts:

I would no more dream of using a window cleaner or getting someone else to clean my car than I would getting a cleaner for my house. I would hate to have a stranger coming into my house to clear up after me and clean my bathroom - I’m afraid I don’t see having a cleaner as a luxury, and most people I know who have one do so because they are too lazy to do their own cleaning.

And do you believe that makes you superior?

Would you pass the same judgement on a man?

XenoBitch · 01/02/2026 22:17

I know people with cleaners, and it is not a luxury. They can't clean, so they have to pay someone to do it for them.

How privileged that they can afford it. Many don’t have that luxury even if they can’t clean themselves. Cleaners are £18/hour here. I wouldn’t waste your time defending the troll OP though, she’s clearly on the wind up at best and at worst pretty vile given her last few posts.

XenoBitch · 01/02/2026 22:22

YorkshireGoldie · 01/02/2026 22:19

I know people who would love a cleaner, but can’t afford it. So then it’s a luxury.

FFS, if you can't clean your own house, then it is not a luxury to pay for a cleaner. It is fucking essential. Some people pay to have special meals delivered to them, some pay for someone to help them get washed and dressed. Is that a luxury? Or are you just being deliberately obtuse?

What an odd response. No, I don’t think I my opinions make me superior. The OP asked for opinions and I gave mine. I would feel exactly the same if the question has been asked by a man.

Exactly and its not just disabilities that can cause people to need a cleaner.

Fir example if people are working multiple jobs etc

No one would suggest paid wrap around childcare was a luxury would they? But some people pay fir that si they can work the hours they need to work.

What's the difference with hiring a cleaner so you can work the hours you need to work?

No, I’m not being obtuse.

just explaining that for many they can’t afford a cleaner. So therefore it would be a luxury. Are you unable to understand this too?

the topic wasn’t about disabled people was it? That’s a whole different thing.

Tollington · 01/02/2026 22:28

I don’t have a cleaner because I’m not lazy.

Well, I have been told on this thread that a disabled person that hires a cleaner "must be on too much benefits"... so even disabled people get judged for having a cleaner.

I mean, if a young child is not collected from school or is left home alone so their parents can work I’m sure social services would become involved.

Not sure you can say the same about house cleaning.

That's right its a different context. Having a cleaner is a luxury in some contexts but not in others.
Some people might need a cleaner because they work long hours. That's not a luxury as it facilitates their work. If they didn't have a cleaner they'd have to leave their job which might be a very difficult situation for them. Therefore the cleaner is necessary.
Just like if you have a 9 to 5 job and you are a single parent to a young child you might have to pay for afterschool childcare of some type. That would be necessary to keep your job.

Being disabled is another reason a cleaner might be beeded and not a luxury.

Im fact im willing to bet a faur proportion of people who use cleaners are doing it out of necessity not as a luxury add on so they can laze around

Well that wasn’t me, I don’t think that at all

I do realise there is a difference between getting a cleaner because you physically can’t , than just not wanting to do it

Laundry and dishwasher at 6am? I think you're the one on a wind up.

Do you not get up at 6am for work like most of the population? Dishwasher whilst kettle boils, press button on washing machine.

There you go..two less jobs for your cleaner!

cramptramp · 01/02/2026 22:36

Of course it’s a bloody luxury. Is this thread just so we all know how well off you are?

Franjipanl8r · 01/02/2026 22:38

Gahr · 31/01/2026 10:19

Exactly. I think that there's a lot of misogyny at the root of it. I bet nobody would criticise a man for not cleaning his own house.

Plenty of people would criticise a man for paying someone else to put up some shelves.

The whole concept of DIY has come about because most people can’t afford to pay someone to come into their home and do jobs they’re able to do themselves. Just like cleaning.

No I do not get up at 6 for work. Not everyone lives as you do. And I am not there to minimize jobs for my cleaner! Her job is to make my life easier, not the other way around.

But if you take the OP thread title at face value, then no, having a cleaner is not an indulgence because for some, it is essential.

NetZeroZealot · 01/02/2026 22:40

Crikey.
I’m not very good at cleaning and don’t like doing it either. I’m self employed & so is my cleaner. I pay her a good rate for her work but I earn more than she does, we’re both doing what we’re good at. What’s the issue?

DIY isn't something that people are mocked for not doing. If anything, the one man I know who does DIY gets laughed at by the rest of us as he doesn't do it very well but is too cheap to get someone in to do a decent job.

Why do you assume 'most' working people get up at 6? Getting-up times vary massively, even amongst people who need to be up early for work.

Some people are just awfully shit at DIY. I am, and my ex was. I only have to look at the really wonky curtain rail in my lounge window to show that! He was great with computers, but shit with his hands, and so am I. Nothing wrong with paying a handyperson to come in and do a decent enough job that looks good, and also wont fall out the wall after a few week.

Most people work, work starts at 9am or often before, you both need to get ready, get the kids ready, school run, travel to work, plus lots of jobs done before you even step out the door and we do that without extra help!

Who knew most of the adult population do that! 🤷🏼‍♀️ What an eye opener for you!

Thank you for making us all feel proud of what we achieve every day OP.

Good wind up post though.

FluffletheMeow · 01/02/2026 22:47

Well it's hardly an essential is it? Can't afford bread this week cos I gotta pay the cleaner.

That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with having one.

I'd love to have someone do my cleaning for me, unfortunately, money aside, I'd have to organise it. And probably keep the house a bit tidier...
