To be confused as to why hiring a cleaner is seen as an indulgence?

This is something that I see time and again on this site, and it is SO WEIRD. People seem to think that it is the height of luxury to have a housecleaner, and also seem to be strangely apologetic about it, offering disclaimers as to why they need one. Also, I've noticed that on threads when someone has a problem with their cleaning service, they will get several posts telling them to 'clean their own house'. Nobody would tell someone to 'service their own boiler' or 'fix their own toilet'! I don't understand it at all. I have a cleaner and I wouldn't be without her.

I agree about wind up post. There are lots of genuine posts whilst people feel a cleaner can feel more of an essential than luxury and I think most people can see other’s points of view.

As soon as I read the cleaner does the dishwasher, it’s a wind up or boast. I can’t think of any occasion over a decade where me or my husband have been unable to empty a dishwasher before work with every age our kids have been. We would need to be wiped out with flu and physically unable to walk to not empty a dishwasher (not happened yet).

OP is on the wind up…

There is another thread on here right now where OP is on about her cleaner not spending the hours she pays for cleaning. Some people people have suggested jobs like laundry, emptying the dishwasher etc, so OP gets her money's worth.
Most people who have a cleaner have them visit once a week at most. No one is leaving all their dishes for then.

What do you mean 'entitled'? What does that even mean? I can afford a service. That doesn't make me 'entitled'. Honestly, I don't normally jump to this, but I honestly think people are jealous.

Ahhh there it is! So this is a stealth boast! You just want us to all be jealous of your considerable wealth! 🙈 How embarrassing for you

YorkshireGoldie · 01/02/2026 21:43

Gahr · 01/02/2026 21:32

Honestly, there have been a couple, they meld into one.

I’m not sure what you mean about this though? Can you explain why you think this? From what I remember it’s 4 men trying to one up each other about how hard they have had it in poverty.

Surely you’re not suggesting that these posters are over dramatising their reality about their finances?

It’s very hard to see your point of view, I do think you are on a massive laugh goading people here. Not sure how you’ve kept on going for two to three days honestly

By that logic, a butler wouldn’t be a luxury because the door needs answering when someone rings the doorbell.

Its not the cleaning that’s viewed as the luxury, it’s the paying someone to do something that you’d otherwise have to do yourself.

Edited

A 'butler' wouldn't be a luxury if you genuinely couldn't answer the door would it? But it wouldn't get called a butler it would be a carer or a PA

A butler is a luxury if uts something that wasn't a necessity because you have the time and physical strength to open your door yourself.

If you CANNOT get your house clean without a cleaner.. for whatever reason.. then a cleaner is not a luxury.

Henriettafromdablox · 01/02/2026 21:44

I don’t understand why this is so difficult.

If there is an essential day to day task that needs doing but you DON’T WANT TO, so you pay someone to do it - that’s a luxury.

If you CAN’T DO IT because you’re disabled or for some other legitimate reason, then it’s not a luxury because you need to pay for it.

We have a cleaner. She does 3 hours a week. I could spare 3 hours a week to do what she does but I don’t want to, so I pay her. It’s a luxury, that I can afford, to make my life better / easier.

No, completely agree - if you can’t answer the door, it’s not a luxury. But if you’re paying someone to do something you can do but would just rather not, then that is.

Of course it’s unskilled, it’s hardly highly paid. I used to have a cleaner, now I don’t because it was absolutely a luxury.

I think cleaning can be high paid. I have two degrees and a professional role, my cleaner earns as much per hour as I do. If I was physically more able I’d be setting up my own cleaning business.

I give up with @Gahr

She gets it, too many people have explained to her why it’s a luxury.

she’s deliberately goading and enjoying herself. Pretty sad really

But I DON'T WANT TO do it myself! Why can't people get that!? JFC.

And I don’t want to drive a shit car, so I spend a lot of money on my car. It’s still a luxury! Why can’t you get that, JFC etc…

Lauralou19 · 01/02/2026 21:48

Gahr · 01/02/2026 21:32

I don't care that I have the time to. I DON'T WANT TO!!!!

So its a luxury then.

You’ve proven your own point 😂

Don’t forget that dishwasher in the morning and laundry on a 6am before work.

I doubt OP saves all her laundry and dishes for the cleaner. She will have run out of clothing and plates long before then, unless she has someone come in daily.

I used to do residential cleans with my mum, and we loaded the dishwasher if it needed loading (or emptying). It was on our list of things to do. Our client will have been doing this themselves between visits.
On a similar note, part of cleaning offices is often loading the dishwasher too, but the staff there seem to manage in the hours before we get there, and clean their cups in the sink.

Planner2026 · 01/02/2026 21:50

It’s up to individuals how they allocate their money and what they prioritise.
Eg I don’t get my nails done but I do have a cleaner 2.5 hours (@ £15.00ph = £37.50) once a fortnight.

My mum never had a cleaner in her life and one of my aunts worked as a cleaner.

I completely get that for a lot of people who are living on a very tight budget it’s just not on the cards and from that point of view it is a luxury to be able to afford a cleaner.

I don’t work and having a cleaner IS a bit of a luxury for me. But my kids work all the hours God sends and outsourcing some work to a cleaner is part of what they need to do to keep their heads above water.

I don't save them, no, but one of her tasks is to empty the dishwasher if it happens to be full and clean, or set it running if it is full and dirty. It varies from week to week.

why do you think people are jealous. And if you were talking about me with the 4 Yorkshire men thing you can be quiet. I explained my reality.

hopefully one day will be able to afford a cleaner.

Well, I was being honest and this is my life. I’m not in poverty but been having financial difficulties. Not sure what you are gaining from being such an absolute bitch to people.

I believe in karma, you will get your comeuppance someday

Anon501178 · 01/02/2026 22:12

That's because fixing a toilet or especially servicing a boiler aren't things everyone has the skills to do!
Unless someone needs a cleaner for help because they have health needs (which is then totally understandable) i am in the camp of thinking 'clean your own house'.Even if i could afford it i would feel really guilty getting someone to clear up my mess, especially cleaning the bathroom & toilet.Just feels too servant-like to me.

I know people with cleaners, and it is not a luxury. They can't clean, so they have to pay someone to do it for them.

I know people who would love a cleaner, but can’t afford it. So then it’s a luxury.
