To think judging political views is like racism

I’ve noticed when someone states their pootical views it becomes oh I bet they vote for X Y or Z and they prejudice them on that. When often they’re wrong?

It’s like a form of racism because they’re judging based on politic views?

Don’t be stupid.

Your race is a fixed thing which you can’t change and has no reflection on your character.

You choose your own political affiliation, and it does reflect your character.

I am not being stupid - just because one doesn’t like a political party doesn’t mean they should judge another choice ?

So... having an opinion is the same as being discriminated against or attacked because of the colour of your skin?

OK.

I said it’s ‘like’ racism. Not that it IS racism.

Meaning - Nasty and vitriolic behavior

This is so dumb it’s difficult to respond to.

Race is something a person is born into. It says nothing at all about character, values or personality.

Political views are a series of conscious personal choices. They tell you a great deal about character, values and personality.

See the difference?

surrealpotato · 28/01/2026 21:39

It's not really like racism, but I agree it can be bigoted. People often make unfair assumptions about your character or views based on your political inclination.

PrawnAgain · 28/01/2026 21:40

I'd say that voting Reform is more like racism than judging someone for voting for a racist.

But often those political views are born into them by family views and what they’ve been brought up with??

This thread is not for slandering pootical views. Sorry about that.

Racism is prejudice against a person because of the amount of melanin in their skin. It's not affected by, or reflected of, a person's intelligence, character curiosity, kindness, willingness to learn, ability to listen etc

Political views are opinions which are subject to, and reflective of, a person's intelligence, character curiosity, kindness, willingness to learn, ability to listen etc. They are not immutable.

Most adults don’t uncritically parrot their parents’ political views. And if they do, that in itself suggests an incurious and intellectually lazy nature that is STILL more informative than race.

I'll definitely going to describe some people as having a "pootical" view from now on

WonderingWanda · 28/01/2026 21:43

Well your thread title says judging people's political views and you can judge without vitriol. Trump is a bully. I dislike bullying and I question and judge the morals of people who defend his behaviour.

Namechange152 · 28/01/2026 21:43

But do you mean political views like about the best way to improve GDP or how much state regulation should be in certain areas or do you mean political views like Muslims/foreigners/immigrants/disabled people don't deserve basic human rights?

Just ignore the bitchiness, there's no need for it.

Yes, political views can be passed through generations in a cultural way.

Also, there is evidence a person's political leanings are something like an inbuilt personality trait.

Namechange152 · 28/01/2026 21:44

Also totally different judging someone based on the colour of their skin to judging someone based on their morals/values etc

This. Ditto MAGA people.

Anything vaguely benign, I agree. Overtly xenophobic, misogynist, racist parties, of course it's normal to judge.

BreadstickBurglar · 28/01/2026 21:44

I’ve had someone suggest this to me in real life as well, as if judging someone on the basis of their views is in some way unfair. I wouldn’t go so far as to say “all X voters are terrible” because I think people vote for complex reasons. But the key difference OP is that judging on the basis of race is prejudice ie you’re pre-judging them as people before you know anything substantial about who they are as people. Judging someone on the basis of views they openly state is just… judging, with knowledge of what they believe. They’re entitled to hold those views and “we” are entitled to think what we like about that.

That's an interesting idea, but it suggests that people can't help their political beliefs because they were brought up with them.

Surely that is only the case if people don't think about their political beliefs. Is it so wrong to judge people for not thinking? Maybe not thinking about the life experiences of others, lacking empathy and compassion.

TheUsualChaos · 28/01/2026 21:46

You're confusing being prejudiced with being judgemental. Not the the same thing.

This is food for thought. I’ve just noticed recently on here people are quick to say ‘you must be a X voter’ as some form of new judgement.

But they are quick to slam a non pootical view because they think you’re a X voter for example.

But someone's identity as gay or black or Jewish or whatever doesn't harm anyone by just existing. Someone's political views can contribute to significant harm to others. So no, not the same thing

Re: family views I grew up with parents who were active Tory party members and local politicians and neither my siblings and I are Tory voters or right wing. NB, we all still love and respect our parents and vice versa.

Pre judging based on what they think you voted for??

It's all of our responsibility to look deeper into policies and values for ourselves. I will absolutely judge someone who votes "because my parents do", even if they are voting the same way as me.
