Words and phrases that drive you insane...

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

'Adulting'.

thisisthebiscuit · 26/01/2026 11:32

Bill Nighy has just started a fab podcast where he does a “banned word” list as one of the features - holibob has already featured!

HoldingTheDoor · 26/01/2026 11:34

“The ick”. No adult should use the word “ick”.

bluedancingtwiglet · 26/01/2026 11:34

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/01/2026 11:36

People being encouraged to 'grab' things.

People who 'reach out' (unless they are short people trying to get items from high shelves in supermarkets.

Thanks for posting this, I'm going off in search of it for my bedtime reading tonight.

I had a friend who referred to going out to dinner with a group of ‘mature’ ladies as “girlie din dins”.

This is just one of many reasons I no longer attend!

MonsteraDeliciosa · 26/01/2026 11:41

“Your X, your rules”

Utterly stupid.

I’m so angry that so many people say ‘reach out’ to me so often that I actually used it the other day! Argh!

Nom nom 😂 can definitely get in the bin.

Overuse of basically and literally annoy me.

RosyPumpkins · 26/01/2026 11:45

‘Give your head a wobble.’ Hate it.

inmyera · 26/01/2026 11:46

‘Co-parenting’ always gets a massive eye roll from me.

I would want her to choke on her girlie din-dins 😆

Reading this had a similar effect on me as nails on a blackboard.

The MN favourite "wow, just wow".
And "my tummy hurts" used by anyone who is not a child.

Ablondiebutagoody · 26/01/2026 11:56

Thriving

When talking about kids at school. They're just at school ffs. Sounds really smug to me.

Pedant5corner · 26/01/2026 11:56

Literally when used to emphasise as in 'I literally died of embarrassment' or 'I literally just said that'.

Boomer55 · 26/01/2026 11:57

"The ick" - one of those meaningless words that only a small child should use. 🤷‍♀️

There was a post on MN recently where someone said "I literally died laughing". It was swiftly followed by a deadpan response of "You literally didn't".

Should it be "Girlie's din dins?

DaisyChain505 · 26/01/2026 12:07

When people pronounce it an expresso instead of espresso.

I’ve started using “making space for” as I was pulled up for saying that I was having a good clear-out” - which was, wrongly, interpreted as meaning in the toilet department🤣
