To not get the Traitors

I'm listening to Scott Mills who has Harriet Tyce on. I know her primarily as an author. They're going on about it as if it's Operation Mincemeat. It's a telly game show not life or death.

I have watched it a few years ago and am not fussy. It's just another vehicle for people to be famous I guess.

I think she looks fabulous, I can’t see anything weird looking about her. She’s clearly attractive, great hair, slim and fit and her wardrobe is really cool and edgy and fits the vibe.

Her hair is weird, it looks like its made from wood. Her face, also, wood stain colour. That fringe is extreme. She looks like a cross between Donatella Versace and British Spain pensioner. In a wig.

Well, the point of Strictly is to teach ballroom dancing to novice dancers and then assess them and ascertain which is the best dancer and has made the best progress. (Disclaimer - I'm aware that many of the novice dancers have prior experience of dancing).

The point of Great British Bake Off is to set a series of challenges to amateur bakers and then assess them and ascertain which is the best baker.

There isn't really much point to The Traitors. The participants don't learn any skills. It's more about luck than anything else. By the way, if other people enjoy the programme, that's great. Each to their own and all that. It's just that I probably won't bother watching it again.

I'm trying to think of the point of Love Island. Mmmm....... I might have to come back to you on that one.

Why does it have to have a point? Can’t entertainment just be the actual point of an entertainment programme?

SpigTheFish · 23/01/2026 20:17

I agree, it's over-hyped and boring. Big Brother with murders.

CalmShaker · 23/01/2026 20:18

Yeah load of crap ain't it, Golden balls all over again just in a different format

It's actually quite Beckettian now that you mention it! An evert-decreasing number of players are confined to the same space where they keep meeting for strange, repetitive rituals, at which they repeat the same words a lot, though rather than 'Let's go. We can't. Why not? We're waiting for Godot', it's things like 'I think it's yourself, Harriet' and 'I'm sorry, I hope I'm wrong' and 'Someone must be keeping me in for a reason.'

It's very Christie too. The increasing paranoia as numbers decrease is a reality TV version of And Then There Were None.

Of course. But it didn't entertain me enough that I would go back and watch a second series. In fact, it got very repetitive watching the same group of people sit around a table night after night, arguing about who might or might not the the traitor. If you find that entertaining, that's great. Enjoy your programme. But I don't. We all have different tastes when it comes to TV. Feel free to pour scorn on my current favorites (Call the Midwife and The Forsyte Saga). Damien Lewis though..... ❤

Why would I pour scorn on your choice of entertainment? I’m not a dick 🤷🏼‍♀️

The audience has been brainwashed into loving it. So much advertising does wonders into thinking something is better than it actually is.
Claudia is just Claudia.

ilovepixie · 24/01/2026 00:54

I’ve never watched it!

beasmithwentworth · 24/01/2026 01:07

It appeals to some people and not others (that much is clear) but I think it’s an individual thing rather than a sheep mentality thing. Quite a few of my friends / work colleagues love it and we’re ridiculously invested when it’s on. Others just can’t see the point. No one is right or wrong. My adult DD cannot understand why DS and I are hooked on it. She is of the opinion that it’s for boring people. I don’t think it’s a measure of intellect / whether you like reality TV in general or says anything about anyone as a person. People just like it or they don’t . Either is fine.

In your opinion!

People that love it have not been ‘brainwashed’ as you put it. Maybe they just really enjoy watching it as a form of entertainment. I know I do and have watched quite a few of the non UK ones too. It’s quite disdainful to assume anyone that loves it has been brainwashed. Surely you are better than that. The reality is that it’s just a case of you and some others not really liking it and some who really do. It’s ok to not like something without assuming that those who do have been brainwashed. It’s just a difference of opinion.

Lambington · 24/01/2026 01:49

Never watched it. Lifes too short.

No link between intellect and reality TV at all. I was sitting around a dinner table of academics at different points of career- some professors and we were all discussing reality TV. I don’t watch much TV generally so felt a bit pushed out which was quite funny because, you know, we’re stereotypically sitting around discussing Freud and Foucault or something but in actual fact the conversation was Love Island, Traitors, MAFS etc.

I tried watching MAFS after they were raving on about it and thought it was dreadfully boring. Traitors is actually good though, the psychology is interesting from unconscious bias through to pack mentality.

PurpleCoo · 24/01/2026 07:37

I could have written this. I hate reality TV and avoided the traitors but gave it a whirl and loved it. I think it's fantastic to have this 'shared thing' that everyone watches in real time, and leads to discussion. The psychology of it is fascinating.

I also don't get the strictly obsession though. That holds no interest for me. People dancing... Very dry

It's not really reality TV. It's an elimination game show like The Apprentice.

This season (4) I've stopped being entertained.

The format is old (despite some changes) and the contestants......oh my! I've been so bored.

Last night......I gave up the will, when the Faithful couldn't get their act together and allowed Rachel to do her thing by manipulating them all.

I'm
Out 😖

BogRollBOGOF · 24/01/2026 08:04

I'm not generally into hyped things and reality TV but stumbled across the finale of season 2 and found myself enjoying it and have followed season 3, celebrity and season 4 since.

I enjoy the psychology of it, and the setting. Because the purpose is to solve problems, the contestants attracted in are thinkers with decent intelligence, while the audience gets the wider knowledge to see who's getting it wrong, and the people who are right getting overlooked.
The timed games and Claudia's dry quips remind me of the Crystal Maze.

DS 12 enjoys it and it's lovely to have some communal TV together.

The episodes clumping together for a few weeks is good scheduling for keeping the tension and pace up. It's not every night, and it's not for a long time.

Don’t be so patronising. I’ve not been brainwashed at all.
I watch very little TV ( due to time not snobbery) and do very little social media. As a family we pick programmes we can sit down together and watch. Traitors fits the bill and we all enjoy it.
I’m not evangelical about it and I don’t think everyone should watch it.
But I really, really hate people looking down on others because of what they choose to watch on TV. The suggestion that not watching this type of TV makes you superior to the uneducated masses.
Get a fucking grip!

MAFS got me through my PhD! It was my reward for a period of uninterrupted writing. An hour of mindless TV was just what I needed. In fact I have a framed quote from one of the contestants in my study as that was my catchphrase for months when people pissed me off 😂

I find the most interesting intelligent people have a range of interests and don’t just stick to ‘high brow’ entertainment.

It's a massive hit, with viewing figures hovering around 11 to 12 million, which is spectacular. However, for context, there are around 50-55 million adults in Britain, so if you don't watch it, you aren't actually very unusual.

How do they know how many are actually watching it? Is it that 11-12 million tvs have it on? In which case that could easily be over half the population watching it?

Yep, I have enjoyed all the other seasons, but this one has felt a bit rigged. I think most people predicted that Rachel would get the shield in the 'box of chance thing'. And then no one hardly put down Faraaz the whole way through, and then suddenly at the end people are voting for him.

Plus Rachel was just bloody annoying, super smug and manipulative - which I know is partly just being a traitor, but she took it to the extreme. I was happy Stephen won though, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 24/01/2026 09:34

We gave up on this season- first time as we’ve loved it previously, but it just felt a bit samey. I don’t think it helps that the celeb version in the autumn was fire… that was a hard act to follow.

That was not the point of the thread. I don't understand the obsession with it on other TV and radio shows. I get that some people like it and some don't but it feels like we're being ordered to invest by the coverage. Last night's news feeds saying Rachel is going to be a megastar sort of proves the other point I was making.
