To not get the Traitors

BigKnickersSize18 · 21/01/2026 08:57

I'm listening to Scott Mills who has Harriet Tyce on. I know her primarily as an author. They're going on about it as if it's Operation Mincemeat. It's a telly game show not life or death.

I have watched it a few years ago and am not fussy. It's just another vehicle for people to be famous I guess.

It's not the kind of thing I usually watch (not into game shows or reality TV) but I'm really hooked on Traitors. I think it's really well done and Claudia is just brilliant. It's fun and camp, it has breathtaking scenery, and lots of surprises and cliffhangers.
Each to their own though.

I'm just going to support OP - I dont get it, have no interest in the show. Also, I dont get Claudia Winkleman - she looks so weird I just cant deal with it. I cant' take her seriously or listen to her.

I think she looks fabulous, I can’t see anything weird looking about her. She’s clearly attractive, great hair, slim and fit and her wardrobe is really cool and edgy and fits the vibe.

I've never watched it and have no interest in it but I hate when discussions about it are held on programmes I'm listening to.

Do you hate it because it's not interesting to you, or because you feel it has no worth or for some other reason? Hate is a very strong word to use for a topic amongst others being discussed. I mean no one is ever going to like everything, we all have different tastes.

Exactly.
Are we now at the point where we’re only prepared to listen to or be exposed to information that directly impacts us as individuals?

What happened to broad discussions about a range of topics? To understanding what is happening in society as a whole?

I blame the algorithms and the fact that nobody reads physical newspapers anymore!! We’re just fed things that align with our interests.

Aquarius1234 · 23/01/2026 14:32

I think its completely over rated. I hate how over produced and staged reality tv is these days!

I can't believe people actually love it?.
Tv used to be a zillion times better than this. ...

Kind of got into the Celeb one,..... bored rigid by the normal one and gave up on it couple of eps in. DH still going strong with it, which means he has it on in the background whilst I read and I silent cannot wait for the series to f*ck off and finish!

Absolutely we can’t have shows just dedicated to us personally. That’s not how it works. They will go with what the majority find interesting or a current trending item.

like I’ve no interest in strictly or any soap opera.so I flip past anything on it or change channel, no biggie, others like it, I can’t imagine hating that others like ir or want to discuss it, I find that fairly self absorbed.

catinateacup · 23/01/2026 14:50

It’s just fun event television for the grey days in January. No-one takes it too seriously! I enjoy it, but it’s hardly Samuel Beckett. But all good fun.

It's actually quite Beckettian now that you mention it! An evert-decreasing number of players are confined to the same space where they keep meeting for strange, repetitive rituals, at which they repeat the same words a lot, though rather than 'Let's go. We can't. Why not? We're waiting for Godot', it's things like 'I think it's yourself, Harriet' and 'I'm sorry, I hope I'm wrong' and 'Someone must be keeping me in for a reason.'

Well put.

DP was scathing about me watching it, but has watched several episodes. Last night I put it on on catch up after I got in and he not only watched it with me, he made me pause it at one point while he went to get a drink from the kitchen. He's hooked.

Whatever you think of the premise, human psychology is fascinating and the way this has played out is really interesting. The Traitors had a 1 in 3 chance of picking a murder victim who didn't have a shield and got it right. They chose not to murder Faraaz which is dangerous for them. He was right to voice his concerns as it protected him. Had Rachel said what she said to Stephen about talking about him differently, he may not have fed into getting her votes at the RT in quite the way he did.

I love it. I find people who don’t like it don’t understand it fully.

There is no need to patronise those who dislike it. I understand it fully. It’s not exactly rocket science.

I hate the over dramatics. I find it uncomfortable to watch people playing out the worst parts of human nature and how it is edited in a way that over exaggerates that. The ridiculously long pauses etc. It is as cliche as reality TV gets.

My daughter loves it, she and my sister FaceTime so they can watch it together and chat about it. I’d rather stick hot pins in my leg. Very much each to their own.

Yes, I agree Grin And 'I just can't shake my gut feeling'/'It's all I've got'.

There's also a dose of George Orwell in the (sometimes terrifying) displays of groupthink at the Round Table, when people who've been suspecting one player all day suddenly vote for someone completely different because their name has come up most at the table.

You honesty can't see a different perspective other than your own?

I know others really enjoy it. I have tried but I can’t get interested in it. I’m not a fan of Claudia either.

I think they also display the BEST bits of human nature.
How they work together in the missions, and congratulate/cheer each other on.
The leaving speeches where they overwhelmingly revert to acting like friends and praising the other players.
How they support and sympathise when they all say why they want the money, which is often for poignant/difficult reasons.
How they name someone at the RT and follow it with 'Sorry'.
The genuine laughs and friendships they have (and I'm sure there's much more, it's just we don't see it all).

TV used to be X Factor and endless shitty reality TV shows that went way past what was acceptable. There was a show where people were fooled into thinking they were going into space, Big Brother series that chose contestants for how much they'd be ready to do on screen and routinely humiliated and distressed them, withholding food and not intervening properly when a Bollywood actress started receiving racist abuse. There was a show where a group of men competed for a date with a woman called Miriam who was revealed at the last moment not to be a woman. X Factor exploited young and clearly ND people and passed them through numerous selection rounds, making them think they were good singers before humiliating them on TV and in front of large audiences. These are just the ones I can remember.

It's fine not to like Traitors, it's fine to have some concerns about it (I'm a fan but I do sometimes worry about bit), but don't pretend it replaced a golden era of fabulous quality viewing.

We love it, it's so much fun with all the twists and turns. It takes a bit of time to get going though.

Edited

I cant get it either.

Ha, you're the only other person on the planet who doesn't like it. Each to their own and all that but I don't understand why people get so obsessed by it.

I dont like it either and really cant see why theres so much hype around it.

ChubbyPuffling · 23/01/2026 15:33

We are watching as a family, I am not keen on it, too predictable. Are we supposed to pretend all the "cliffhangers" are surprises?
That the loud mouthed James isn't just like every office arse.
That everyone picking on Jade all of the time with no valid reason isn't bullying.
Just seems to drag on with all the faux surprised faces gasping at every.little.thing.
But, the rest of the family enjoy it and watch stuff that I like in return, so it's not allll bad..

Megifer · 23/01/2026 15:42

Omg I love it!! Got into it after sleb Traitors and its one of the best things on TV IMO. really cleverly done. Claudia's outfits are to die for and shes brill in it, I never used to like her really.

Even DP who never watches stuff like TV series etc is hooked.

I cant wait for tonight eeeeeeek!!!!!

I'd love to know what TV programmes are pointful. What are the criteria?

Well, the point of Strictly is to teach ballroom dancing to novice dancers and then assess them and ascertain which is the best dancer and has made the best progress. (Disclaimer - I'm aware that many of the novice dancers have prior experience of dancing).

The point of Great British Bake Off is to set a series of challenges to amateur bakers and then assess them and ascertain which is the best baker.

There isn't really much point to The Traitors. The participants don't learn any skills. It's more about luck than anything else. By the way, if other people enjoy the programme, that's great. Each to their own and all that. It's just that I probably won't bother watching it again.

I'm trying to think of the point of Love Island. Mmmm....... I might have to come back to you on that one.

I just saw a post about radio guests this morning and it mentioned "Traitors star Roxy" so ut absolutely is a means to celebrity. Like Amanda Holden all those decades ago on Blind Date.

It isn’t really.
She has starred in this series so what they said is correct. You only really tend to hear from
previous contestants when they’re on uncloaked.
It hasn’t really launched any celebrity careers.
